Back in December we got word that David Cronenberg would in fact shoot The Talking Cure, an adaptation of the Christopher Hampton play about Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung that was floated as a possible Cronenberg project back in 2007. At the time, he seemed to have a fantastic cast lined up: Christoph Waltz as Freud, Michael Fassbender as Jung, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, the patient with whom both men have a relationship of sorts. Now, sadly, Waltz has dropped out. But Cronenberg's recent go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, has stepped in to replace him. Deadline Hollywood reports on the deal, saying that Waltz had to drop out in order to do Water for Elephants, the Depression-era circus romance being directed by Francis Lawrence. It's become common knowledge (or at least a common perception) that Sean Penn can be kind of a jerk. It all started back when he was punching out photographers calling him Mr. Madonna, and since then he's always had a contentious relationship with his own fame. I'm not saying he isn't a damn fine actor; he's just a terrible -- and I mean terrible -- celebrity. Last night at the 82nd Academy Awards, Penn delivered the award for best actress with a cryptic speech about not being a member of the Academy and overlooked actresses. Over at NY Magazine, they think they've figured out that Penn was referencing his soon to be ex-wife, Robin Wright, for being overlooked in both Penn's acceptance speech last year, and for her work in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee this year.

Now, this isn't the first time that Penn has gone off script at the presenters' podium, with the most famous instance being back in 2005 when Penn took personal offense at some of Chris Rock's jokes on behalf of Jude Law. Sure, it made for a good Oscar clip the morning after, but I can't be the only one who thought that it was proof positive that Penn needs to lighten up a little. The man was Spicoli for god sakes, he does remember what the word comedy means, right? Granted, there was a brief shining moment when I thought that maybe Mr. Penn had finally located his sense of humor when he appeared on The Colbert Report for a Meta-Free-Phor-All. But I guess that was wishful thinking, because after Penn's performance last night, the comedy credit will have to go to Mr. Colbert.

There's a rumor that Sean Penn was thrown out of the Governor's Ball last night for punching Greg Shapiro, a Hurt Locker producer reportedly dating Robin Wright. Though there are numerous sources, they can't seem to get their stories straight:

One claims, "Academy officials...said he was banned from the Ball." However, a rep for the Academy says, "Sean Penn chose not to attend the Governors Ball." [E!]
TMZ's sources agree that Sean Penn couldn't have been kicked out of the Governors Ball because he was never there in the first place. Penn and Greg Shapiro did run into each other backstage at the Oscars, but no one saw this alleged fight. An "insider" says, "I didn't see it happen ... something could've happened, but if it did, it was minor and only lasted a second." [TMZ]
A source says at Elton John's Oscars party, "Madonna walked in with her manager Guy Oseary and her entourage and ordered a Belvedere vodka. It was left to one rather nervous waiter to tell her only Grey Goose was available and when he did all hell broke loose. Madonna was dropping F-bombs like they were going out of fashion. Fortunately Guy was able to calm her down. But she sulked about the vodka and ordered a non-alcoholic virgin mojito instead. Diva presenters, bad dance, graceless hosts. Marina Hyde looks back at a starry night

Ladies, gentlemen, and non-members of the academy: welcome to G2's almost-live coverage of the heartbreakingly succinct Oscars telecast, which – despite the fact that no one would dream of doing anything as transgressive as swearing – is being brought to you with a 24-hour time delay.

Right off the bat I want to join the salutes for The Hurt Locker – a movie just too damn important to bother with stuff like narrative, and which will one day be deemed just as hilariously underrated as American Beauty (which, you might dimly recall, won a mere five Oscars) and Dances With Wolves (a paltry haul of seven, including a best director statuette for Mister Kevin Costner). As for James Cameron's hopes for Avatar, his groundbreaking, record-breaking movie . . . well, they are with Eywa now.

This was indeed a night that made history – David Letterman is now no longer the worst-ever Oscars host. Co-presenters Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin proved they couldn't hit a gag with a trunkload of IEDs, falling back three times on comedy misreadings of the autocue, to ever-diminishing returns. They weren't even phoning it; they were texting it in, deferring even the comedy opening number to Doogie Howser MD. As is too often the case with this marquee event, it was a night that lived down to expectations. The Oscars telecast is like one of those movies where you just know that at some point, someone is going to slide down the back of a door with their head in their hands. That someone will be you – but we'll come to the soi disant "Legion of Extraordinary Dancers" later. For now, it's time to sling out some more gongs.

Best drinking game

The one where you do a shot every time someone mentions Meryl (surname very much de trop, obviously). Ever since the heyday of the studio era, an adorably defensive Hollywood has wanted you to know that it doesn't just have sex symbols who can turn in a role. It has actors – men and women who deliver something so much more epic than mere performance. These days, the mantle once worn by the likes of Norma Shearer and Greer Garson is all Meryl's, and failure to either nominate her or mention her less than three times in any given Oscars ceremony would trigger an industry-wide existential crisis. This year's second-best drinking game? The one where you take a gulp every time a member of the motion-picture community salutes the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. It really puts stuff into perspective.

Most tediously predictable seating arrangement

Placing James Cameron directly behind Kathryn Bigelow. Hey, did you hear that those guys were married once? Even if you did, I'll bet you haven't listened to nearly enough yakking about the subject yet.

Best acceptance speech

This year produced that rarest of occurences, both a best actor and a best actress whom you'd love to have a drink with. For all Jeff Bridge's immense charm though, Sandra takes the speech honours. Wherever you stand on America's Sorta Sweetheart, she played it just the way you should: surprised, sweet, sisterly, self-deprecating, and with the brief threat of tears, but not so you feared she'd be overwhelmed by them. A class act. Plus, she gets triple points for the joke about Meryl being "a great kisser".

Best They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To moment

Footage of Lauren Bacall accepting an honorary Oscar at a gala a few months ago. "A man at last," drawled Bacall of her statuette. "The thought that when I get home I'm going to have a two-legged man in my room is so exciting I can hardly stand it." At the Oscars, this was immediately followed by a cutaway to Cameron Diaz chewing gum. Truly, it was the stars that got small.

Best diva moment

Best director presenter Barbra Streisand walking almost to the front of the stage, then waiting imperiously for a lackey to rush out of the wings and help her down three steps to the microphone. Long may she fib about the farewell aspect of her tours.

Worst cutaway

A tough category, now that reaction shots appear to be subject to the most heavyhanded ethnic profiling. Ethan Coen was the night's go-to Jew, the guy they cut to right after Steve Martin made the joke about Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz playing a Nazi "obsessed with finding Jews", and observed that the contents of the Kodak Theatre were pretty much "the motherlode". Don't worry, viewers – see, Ethan's laughing! The Jews totally get the joke! The sledgehammer cutaway was also deployed each time an African-American star was mentioned. The fact that you could practically hear a producer screaming, "Close-up on Morgan Freeman! Or one of the other four, goddammit!", really added to the sense of how far we have come.

Most never-ending segment

If you had spent the last few weeks wondering what the score from The Hurt Locker would look like interpreted via the medium of modern dance, this was the night for you. In what felt like a 47-minute medley, each and every nominee for best score was . . . glossed, would you call it? . . . by a troupe called the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, who really know how to distil the tension of bomb disposal into a soft-shoe number. This year's ceremony was produced by one of the judges on So You Think You Can Dance, which goes some way toward explaining that excruciating segment, but nowhere near excusing it.

Best reminder of what Hollywood dreams are made of

Oprah Winfrey's tribute to Gabourey Sidibe. "She was a student trying to earn some money to go to college. On Monday she skipped school to audition for a movie called Precious. On Tuesday they called her back to meet the director . . . On Wednesday, she got the part. And tonight, she is sitting at the Academy Awards in the same category as Meryl Streep." Ain't that the movies? Nicely done, Oprah.

Best fauxhemian

Sean Penn. Even though Sean knows that real outsiders simply wouldn't show for the Oscars, he agreed to present best actress, and used the occasion of someone else's big moment to announce, "I never became an official member of the academy", before taking an incoherent swipe at them for failing to acknowledge his ex-wife. I know! You can almost smell him mocking the institution. Still, while Sean is only a country member of the academy, fans of Team America will recall that he is a leading light of FAG, the Film Actors' Guild – a powerful lobby coincidentally led by Oscars co-host Arec Bardwin.

Most awkward staging

As a tribute to the various 12-step programmes with which so many attendees are familiar, the best actor and best actress nominees are now bigged up in a segment that resembles an AA sponsors' meeting. Julianne Moore eulogised Colin Firth, making it clear they had "only worked together for three days", while Colin Farrell recommended Jeremy Renner with a reminiscence about "that trip to Mexico, which I wish I could remember more of", while saying "man" and "brother" a lot.

Worst sound design

The Oscars ceremony. I fell asleep in that desperately called-for discourse on the difference between sound editing and sound mixing, so I might have missed the explanation as to why, in the year 2010, the Oscars telecast sounds as if it was engineered by a competition winner. Is it really beyond the wit of early 21st-century TV professionals to raise the level on the auditorium announcer's mic to "discernible"?

Best lecture

Courtesy of best supporting actress Mo'nique, who thanked her husband for advising her that "sometime you have to forego doing what's popular to do what's right". Blithely undermining her fellow nominees, the Precious star praised the academy for rewarding "the performance not the politics", apparently under the impression that Oprah's campaign juggernaut for the movie is about as far away from power-player politicking as you can get.

Worst definition of horror

No-time Academy Award-winners Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart introduced a tribute to the horror movie genre, which took some bizarre detours. Movies you never realised were horror flicks include Marathon Man, Edward Scissorhands, Little Shop of Horrors, Jaws, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Beetlejuice and, um, Twilight, which was really flattered by being interspliced with The Shining. Do adjust your records accordingly.

Most self-regardingly graceless hosts

The academy, which banned The Hurt Locker's producer Nicolas Chartier for sending the most innocuous email to a circle of acquaintance, in which he asked them to vote for The Hurt Locker "and not a $500m film". This is apparently an "ethical lapse" in breach of the academy's negative-campaigning rule, so the man who financed and produced the movie wasn't there to see it have a night he could only have dreamed of. Yet Zac Efron is given pride of place up front near Meryl. Where's the justice?

Worst fact-checking

Demi Moore introduced the "in memoriam" section to people we've lost, in a montage that failed to include her pre-2003 bodywork. Rather more glaring, however, was the omission of Farrah Fawcett, whose failure to make the cut an academy spokesman would have you believe was totally intentional. "Major fail" is Roger Ebert's view on the matter.

Most arresting emergence from the Where Are They Now files . . .

Is Judd Nelson – how to put this? – going through some stuff? The Internet Movie Database indicates the Breakfast Club star will feature in six TV movies or straight-to- DVD releases this year, but his appearance during the John Hughes tribute was certainly eye-catching, and all information as to where Bender's currently "at" would be gratefully received.

The strangest moment at last night's Academy Awards (besides whatever was coming out of Sean Penn's mouth) was when Music by Prudence director-producer Roger Ross Williams bolted to the stage to accept the best documentary short statue. At first I thought he ran because he was seated in the nosebleeds, but it soon became clear that he was running for his life when a crazy drunk lady bum-rushed the stage. Turns out that lady was Elinor Burkett, a once-producer on the documentary who had removed herself from it over a year ago and not sitcom star Marcia Wallace as I had originally believed.

Sandra Bullock clutched her Academy Award, and her The Blind Side costar Quentin Aaron posed with Rachel McAdams. Kathryn Bigelow and Jeremy Renner looked thrilled to bring out their The Hurt Locker gold, and fellow winner Jeff Bridges smiled alongside fellow Crazy Heart actor Maggie Gyllenhaal. Cameron Diaz changed out of her red carpet dress and into something shorter as she chatted with Jason Segel, and elsewhere Sean Penn shared a drink with Kid Rock.

Kristen Stewart, meanwhile, chattated away alongside Angelica Huston, as Inglourious Basterds' Eli Roth cuddled up to his apparently new lady Peaches Geldof. Rachel McAdam's ex Josh Lucas gave some bunny ears to Sam Worthington and Carey Mulligan, while happy couples like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Russell Brand and Katy Perry only had eyes for each other. Natalie Portman stopped to say hi to her Black Swan costar Mila Kunis's boyfriend Macauley Culkin, following his touching tribute to John Hughes. Lovely ladies like Kate Beckinsale and Anna Kendrick kept the fashionable times going, as the VF bash got a long night of partying in LA underway.

Los invitados recorren un ancho pasillo de moqueta roja con techo transparente y cubierto -es una tarde lluviosa la de hoy en Los Ángeles- bajo las luces de los flashes y los gritos de admiradores. Uno de ellos es Pedro Almodóvar, vistiendo pajarita blanca y gafas de sol. "Debería cambiar de idioma y hacer alguna película en inglés", declara el director español desde el epicentro del cine más glamuroso del planeta. "Ahora no estoy nada nervioso -dijo a la prensa española que le asedió a la entrada del teatro-, cuando eres candidato llegas a la gala angustiado, después de estar mucho tiempo de promoción. Pero ahora estoy mucho más tranquilo. Es más divertido".

Penélope Cruz ha hecho su aparición. Ella va a ser la primera presentadora de un premio de la gala; está "nerviosa" confiesa, pero no por su candidatura a Mejor Actriz de Reparto, un premio que está convencida de que no ganará. ¿La apuesta de Penélope? Mo'nique, la actriz madre de Precious. Penélope ha elegido un vestido color vino de Donna Karan con cola por detrás y palabra de honor por delante. El pelo, recogido, como a ella le gusta.

2:30 hora española (17:30 hora local): comienza la gala

Un arranque inusual para la gala: los candidatos a mejores actores y actrices miran fijamente a la platea desde el escenario. El actor Neil Patrick Harris (Un médico precoz, Cómo conocí a vuestra madre) es el primero en hablar: "ustedes se preguntarán que hago yo aquí". Y el actor, con chaqueta brillante, lo explica con un número musical en cuya canción dijo, por ejemplo, "no puedo pensar en el Botox sin todos vosotros" o "no puedes sacar a James Cameron de su CGI".

Él da paso a la pareja de presentadores: Alec Baldwin y Steve Martin. "Esta noche hay dos presentadores y he despedido a mi agente por no ser yo uno de ellos", canto Neil Patrick Harris. Los anfitriones, en un recurso muy habitual de las galas, hicieron un recorrido por los personajes más destacados entre el público. El primer objetivo de sus bromas es Meryl Streep, "la que más veces ha perdido", una actriz que ostenta el mayor número de nominaciones. "Todo el que ha trabajo alguna vez con Meryl Streep se pregunta qué hay con todo este fetichismo hitleriano", dijeron, mientras la actriz no podía contener la risa. "La pesadísima" Hellen Mirren también reciben deportivamente sus comentarios.

Monique es una cómica y no dan oscars a los cómics, le dice Alec Baldwin a Steve Martin, añadiendo "bueno, no sé a quién se lo estoy contando". Los presentadores se pusieron unas gafas 3D para fijarse en la presencia de James Cameron. Hicieron referencia al que se considera gran duelo de la noche, recordando que Katheryn Bigelow -la directora de En tierra hostil- estuvo casada con el director de Avatar. Bromeron comentando que Bigelow, "de la ilusión que le hacía compartir nominación" con su ex, le mandó "una cesta con un temporizador" y él "la correspondió regalándole un Toyota".

Presentaron a Penélope Cruz diciendo que su agente le recomendó que cambiara de nombre. Ella entrega el primer premio de la noche, el galardón al Mejor Actor de Reparto, que se lo lleva Christoph Waltz por su papel de caza judíos en Malditos bastardos, de Quentin Tarantino. "Oscar y Penélope, eso es un über bingo", comenzó diciendo Waltz. "Aquí es donde vamos, pero vamos por el otro lado", contó que le dijo Tarantino al presentarle el guión de la película.

Steve Carrell y Cameron Díaz dan paso a unas declaraciones, por llamarlas así, de personajes de películas de animación como Coraline, el protagonista de Up o el sapo y el cocodrilo de Tiana y el sapo. De esta manera se presenta el premio a Mejor Película de Animación, que le ha correspondido al título de Pixar-Disney Up. "Nunca soñé que hacer un libro de fotos de mi cuaderno de matemáticas de tecero me podría llevar a esto", dijo el director Pete Docter.

"And the winner is..." de nuevo

Miley Cirus y Amanda Seyfried presentaron el premio a la Mejor Canción Original -The weary kind- para Crazy Heart compuesta por Ryan Bingham y T Bone Burnett. Al escuchar el anuncio del premio Jeff Bridges, actor de la película y nominado a Mejor Actor, se puso en pie para aplaudir.

La actriz y guionista Tina Fey y el actor Robert Downey Jr introducen el Premio al Mejor Guión con la mejor presentación de un premio hasta el momento, en un gala que no se está destacando por la calidad de su guión, precisamente. La guionista y el actor ponen de relieve las diferencias entre lo que desean los guionistas y los actores y cómo se hacen la vida imposible los unos a los otros... del amor al odio. El ganador del premio ha sido para Mark Boal por En tierra hostil. Periodista y corresponsal en Irak, dedicó el premio a la directora del film y a los soldado que están en el país. "Como reportero volví de Irak con la idea de una historia sobre esos hombres en las trincheras de una guerra impopular. Pensé que podia ser una buena película. El resultado ha excedido ampliamente mis expectativas", dijo sobre la película dirigida por Bigelow. Además, quiso "dar las gracias y dedicar esto a nuestras tropas, a las 115.000 personas que siguen en Irak, a los 120.000 de Afganistán y a los más de 30.000 heridos y 4.000 que no lograron volver a sus hogares".

Los actores Molly Ringwald y Matthew Broderick, dos importantes actores de las películas del gran John Hughes (El club de los cinco, La chica de rosa, 16 velas) rindieron homenaje al director que mejor filmó la adolescencia, fallecido el 6 de agosto de 2009. "Trataba a los jóvenes no como niños sino como adultos" dijeron los actores de sus películas, que aplaudieron a la familia de Hughes, asistentes a la ceremonia.

"No hemos dañado a ningún logotipo durante la realización de la película", dijo el productor del estupendo corto de animación Logorama, Mejor Corto de Animación, que presenta un Los Ángeles totalmente forrado por marcas comerciales; el corto español La dama y la muerte de Javier Recio se quedó pues a la puerta de ganar la estatuilla; además añadió que "como productor de la película" debía "agradecer a los 3.000 sponsors no oficiales que aparecen en ella". Music By Prudence es el Mejor Corto Documental, que recogió su director Roger Ross Williams ("hace dos años cuando tomé un avión y fui a Zimbabwe, nunca imaginé ni en mis sueños más salvajes que acabaría aquí"). Y, el Mejor Corto de Ficción ha sido para The new tenants.

Hilarante la aparición de Ben Stiller como un na'vi de Avatar para presentar el premio al Mejor Maquillaje, que ha sido para la película de JJ Abrahams Star Trek, película que sólo competía contra otras dos: La Reina Victoria e Il Divo. Sacha Baron Cohen tendría que haber formado pareja con Stiller para presentar este premio pero fue vetado por la Academia al haber escrito un chiste que podía ofender a James Cameron. El creador de personajes como Bruno o Borat iba a aparecer embarazo y pensaba declarar que el padre era el propio Cameron. Recogieron el premio Barney Burman, Mindy Hall y Joel Harlow quien dijo que su equipo lo formaban 40 personas y que les nombrarían "en el backstage".

Los espectadores han notado que tras unos años de extrema corrección política en los que los presentadores de los premios anunciaban el ganador con "And the Oscar goes to" para que no hubiera tan claros vencedores y perdedores, se ha recuperado la vieja fórmula "And the winner is". Uno de esos "winner" ha sido el emocionado Geoffrey Fletcher, guionista de Precious, recogió el premio al Mejor Guión Adaptado. "Este premio es para todos aquellos que trabajan en un sueño cada día", dijo. "Yo le escribí el discurso", improvisó Steve Martin mientras Fletcher abandonaba el escenario.

El auditorio del Teatro Kodak se puso en pue para aplaudir con más respeto a Roger Corman y Lauren Bacall, receptores del Premio Honorífico, que para ahorrar tiempo permanecieron en sus asientos y no recibieron los premios en el escenario.

Un concepto de fotografía poco ortodoxo

Robin Williams presentó el Oscar a la Mejor Actriz de Reparto. La ganadora ha sido Mo'Nique por su papel en Precious. Un premio cantado que la propia Penélope Cruz, candidata por Nine y que esperaba sentada junto a Javier Bardem el veredicto, aseguró que esta actriz de comedia -por primera vez en un papel dramático- y presentadora de televisión sería la ganadora. Mo'Nique agradeció a la Academia "por demostrar que esto puede ir sobre la interpretación y no sobre la política".

Sigourney Weaver presentó el premio a la Mejor Dirección Artística, que ha ido destinado a Avatar. Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg y Kim Sinclair recogieron el premio, que Carter agradeció a Cameron por su "profunda visión". Stromberg dijo que hace 13 años los doctores le dijeron que no sobreviviría y que "este sueño jamás sucedería".

"Dos puercas de primera" fue el pie de Steve Martin para Sarah Jessica Parker y Tom Ford, que salieron para presentar el premio al Diseño de Vestuario. Un galardón para La Reina Victoria de Sandy Powell que declaró "¡ya tengo dos de estos!".

El premio para la Mejor Edición de Sonido y la Mejor Mezcla de Sonido ha sido, en las dos ocasiones para En tierra hostil, un trabajo realizado por Paul N.J. Ottosson.

Avatar recolectó otro de los premios técnicos de la noche, la Mejor Dirección de Fotografía, un premio presentado por Sandra Bullock y que ha recibido el italiano Mauro Fiore. Un premio extraño para una película realizada prácticamente por ordenador. Fiore agradeció al "visionario" Cameron.

Tras este, Demi Moore dio paso al tradicional recuerdo a los fallecidos del mundo del cine en el último año, las imágenes fueron pasando mientras se escuchaba la canción In my life de los Beatles. Rápidamente los seguidores de la gala que comentaban su transcurso enganchados a Internet apreciaron que Farrah Fawcet no estaba incluida.

'En tierra hostil', imponiéndose

La música de Up, ha sido la que ha merecido la Mejor Banda Sonora Original, compuesta por Michael Giacchino. "Chicos, si queréis ser creativos hacedlo porque no es una pérdida de tiempo", ha dicho después de recordar cómo su padre le prestaba su cámara de 8 mm.

Como no podía ser de otra manera, Avatar se ha impuesto ante las películas espaciales District 9 y Star Trek en los Mejores Efectos Visuales. Joe Letteri ha explicado que "Avatar es una película sobre aprender a ver el mundo de nuevas maneras" y, por ello, agradeció como muchos de sus compañeros de equipo, a James Cameron.

El premio al Mejor Documental ha sido por The Cove, una cinta que denuncia la caza de los delfines. Uno de los premiados mostró un cartel que pedía que se enviaran mensajes de texto con la palabra "delfin" a un número de teléfono. Un plano que rápidamente la realización de la gala evitó para que no saliera en pantalla. Su co director Fisher Stevens explicó el "honor de trabajar en esta película e intentar hacer un film de entretenimiento que además intenta iluminar a la gente".

El matrimonio de editores que ha trabajado en En tierra hostil, Bob Murawski y Chris Innis, recogieron el galardón al Mejor Montaje. Ellos agradecieron, entre otros, a Sam Raimi que les dio su primer trabajo. Además, agradecieron a la Academia por premiar una película "sin compromisos" para la que no hicieron "ninguna proyección previa o grupos de discusión o notas de estudio".

Quentin Tarantino y Pedro Almodóvar salieron juntos para otorgar el premio a la Mejor Película de Habla No Inglesa. Se declararon admiradores mútuos y Almodóvar confeso que, en realida, no entendía bien lo que se dice en las películas del director de Pulp fiction. La cinta argentina El secreto de sus ojos de Juan José Campanella se ha impuesto a La cinta blanca de Haneke. Campanella agradeció a la Academia por no considerar el idioma de los Na'vi como Habla No Inglesa. El equipo de la película mandó "un abrazo a los hermanos de Chile", en español, en los últimos segundos de su discurso de agradecimiento.

Recta final: los grandes premios

Kate Winslet hizo su aparición en el escenario para dar el Oscar al Mejor Actor -con la fórmula "and the Oscar goes to"- a Jeff Bridges por Crazy Heart, quien alzó, entre gritos suyos y vítores de la platea, la estatuilla hacia el cielo y agracedió a su padre y a su madre. Aunque la Academia ha pedido a los premiados que no agradezcan a la familia, los elegidos no han hecho caso de la recomendación, como el expresivo y eufórico Bridges. Bridges recordó que sus padres amaban el espectáculo y que hacían que "los niños les estretuviéramos en sus fiestas". Ha recordado también como su padre, Lloyd Bridges, le "sentaba en la cama" para enseñarle "todo lo básico para hacer un papel en Sea Hunt", la serie de televisión en la que actuaba su padre.

Sean Penn le dio a Sandra Bullock el Oscar a la Mejor Actriz por el primer papel dramático de su vida, en The Blind Side. Ha sido su primer Oscar, recibido un día después de haber conseguido un Razzie (el anti-Oscar a las peores películas e interpretaciones) por Loca obsesión. Entre lágrimas, Bullock, que interpreta el papel de una madre, agradeció la educación que le dio la suya. Quiso compartir el premio con las otras nominadas, especialmente Meryl Streep.

Barbra Streisand fue la elegida para dar la sorpresa al que sería el Mejor Director del año 2009 según la Academia del Cine de Hollywood. Y, por primera vez en la historia, no ha sido un Director sino Directora: Kathryn Bigelow por la película sobre los soldados en Irak En tierra hostil. "No estaría aquí sino fuese por Mark Boal quien ha arreisgado su vida" ha dicho la directora sobre el guionista de la gala, también oscarizado. Bigelow ha dedicado el premio "a las mujeres y los hombres del Ejército que arriesgan todos los días su vida en Irak, Afganistán y el mundo entero y deseo que vuelvan a casa sanos y salvos".

Y casi sin mediar tiempo entre un premio y otro, Tom Hanks ha anunciado rápidamente, pues la gala llevaba media hora de retraso, que la Mejor Película era también En tierra hostil, ante una desconcertada Bigelow, que aún no había abandonado las bambalinas del escenario.

The 2010 Oscars have come and gone with The Hurt Locker standing out as the night's big winner. The acting awards went to this season's favorites - Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Mo'Nique for Precious, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. The show kicked off with Neil Patrick Harris's opening number, which was the perfect lead-in to Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin playing off each other throughout the night. Young Hollywood had an exciting evening as well with presenters including Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart, who both chatted backstage about being a bit nervous before stepping out. Kristen got to have a moment with her dad on the way in, which gave us a super sweet sighting. Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick also made a sweet duo giving out a statue together.

The Academy Awards red carpet provided some excitement, of course, and the acceptance speeches had us laughing and crying as the winners took the stage. Penelope Cruz didn't make it two in a row, but she was holding hands with Javier Bardem when the cameras announced the best supporting actress nominees - that's a pretty big public display of affection for the private couple. Sarah Jessica Parker got animated in the crowd before Matthew Broderick took part in the touching tribute to John Hughes. The Oscars have been over for five minutes. My cheeks are flushed, there are tears in my eyes, and my stomach is doing flips. It has finally happened!

A woman has won the Academy Award for Best Director. The winner is not just any woman, but Kathryn Bigelow, the amazing genre filmmaker and director of The Hurt Locker. Three other women have been nominated previously: Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano, and Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation. This is a monumental achievement and a dream come true for any feminist film buff, a dream I honestly thought would never happen.

I’m going to have to let it sink in a little bit before I can fully articulate the impact I think this will have on filmmaking, but everything has changed, and is still changing, definitely for the better. Bigelow's double win deserves a double congratulations both for her hard work, perseverance, and excellent filmmaking, as well as for helping change the face of filmmakers forever. When people stupidly say “There aren’t any good female directors,” we can now point to this moment as solid proof they are wrong.

I wish I could be as happy for Sandra Bullock and Mo’Nique as I am for Bigelow, but I can’t. Despite Sandra’s excellent speech, I’ve never liked her as an actress because she constantly plays characters who revel in personal humiliation. Her rom-com’s are the worst of the worst of female portrayals. Knowing Hollywood, she won because she was the highest grossing performer of last year, and acting had nothing to do with it. In fact, she wasn’t even on the awards radar until the profits of The Blind Side were announced.

That being said, it’s hard for me to be truly disappointed by her win. She beat out every dick, dick, and dick in 2009 at the box office. That’s another first for last year's films, and an especially nice success for an actress over the age of forty! Here’s to hoping Bullock's Oscar will open up some doors for the actress, and that she will be more inclined to accept roles in better female-driven films. (Also, I give Bullock kudos for her Razzie acceptance speech for Worst Actress in All About Steve. I think it was really tasteful.)

Mo’Nique gave the best performance imaginable in an exploitation film. I don’t think Precious is a good movie and find its manipulative, over-dramatized sensibilities more offensive than torture porn. With torture porn, you at least have the courtesy of knowing exactly what you’re getting into. Precious' earnest intentions come off as over-stylized drama-rama, and Mo’Nique’s character in the film actually sums up the worst aspects of that movie. But, again, her win actually means more than meets the eye, as she joins the few African Americans who have won Academy Awards.

Aside from Bigelow winning Best Director, there weren’t any major surprises at the ceremony this year. The problem with the awards season, in general, is that most of the excitement over films has diminished by Oscar time because every award is virtually set in stone. I adored the speeches given by Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Michael Giacchino (Up), and Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), and I enjoyed the special speeches for each leading actor/actress nominee. Kristen Stewart and Sean Penn boarded the fail boat with their presentations, and at times, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were painful to watch, but what can you do?

The memorial gets to me every year because it always has a handful of my favorite classic actors, actresses, and filmmakers. In 2009, we lost Jennifer Jones, Jean Simmons, Betsy Blair, Karl Malden, Jack Cardiff, Eric Rohmer, Natasha Richardson, Kathryn Grayson, David Carradine, and so many more. I loved the odd tribute to horror films, which included bona fide classics like The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, and Psycho, as well as some odd balls like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4 and Leprechaun. The John Hughes tribute was just weird.

The biggest disappointment of the evening fell to their lifetime achievement awards. Lauren Bacall, Roger Corman, and Gordon Willis all received the honor this year, but they failed to honor them properly by not airing their acceptances during the actual ceremony. If we had ten or fifteen minutes to honor John Hughes, surely we had enough time to honor the amazing work ethic, careers, and talent of Bacall, Corman, and Willis. Boo, Academy, boo.

All in all, though, I had a great time watching the Oscars this year and am still buzzing with happiness over Bigelow’s win. I know change doesn’t happen overnight, but I have a feeling I’m going to wake up tomorrow with a sense of feminist progress in the world. I’d like to thank the Academy for making it possible. The Oscars just finished. The Hurt Locker won, which wasn't a surprise. Actually, there were hardly any surprises at all, except for maybe how long and lousy the broadcast was. Why can they never get this thing right?

Brian Moylan: As far as the awards go, all of the heavy favorites walked home with a trophy. Mo'Nique won for Precious, Christophe Waltz won for Inglourious Basterds, Jeff Bridges won for Crazy Heart, and The Hurt Locker beat Avatar for Best Picture. We had a pretty good idea all these things would happen. Katherine Bigelow, the lady who directed Point Break, became the first female to win Best Director, beating her ex-husband James Cameron. All the pundits had been picking these as the winners for weeks now. Snore. The only race to have a bit of heat was between Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock for Best Actress, a prize that Sandy B took home for The Blind Side. (The complete list of winners is here.)

The show itself was a gigantic mess. Neil Patrick Harris and sparkly are two of my favorite things, but even they couldn't save the Ziegfeld folly of an opening number. The forced banter between hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who never made the role of hosts their own, was forced and mostly unfunny. Ben Stiller donned another ridiculous getup this year to do a long, awkward Na'vi makeup joke that choked so hard even the bit turned blue in the face. But the worst, the absolute worst was America's Best Dance Crew the Extended Dance Remix popping and locking to the nominees for Best Score. This is what happens when you let Adam Shankman, a director and judge on television's So You Think You Can Dance, direct the show. You get a sad, misplaced bunch of kids twirling around on stage like Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo was getting a lifetime achievement award.

What did you think Richard? What did you hate about it? Was there anything redeeming?

Richard Lawson: Hi Brian! Sorry if this all comes out a bit weird, but mama's been drinking and almost got run over by a bus on Houston while running home from a friend's house to write this post. Anyway. Oscars! What are they good for? Absolutely nothing. I mean, no matter who wins or who hosts, the Oscars are always Gay Christmas and fabulously enjoyable. But just as American Idol blows turkeys this year, so too did the Oscars. When the show's most exciting moment is Carol Burnett's character from The Rescuers hijacking the Best Documentary Short award, then you know you've got a problem.

The able comedy duo of Martin & Baldwin infused a surprisingly-weird sense of humor into the proceedings, which was nice, but everything else just felt soooo time wastey. Why did we have street dancing? It almost seemed that, because of Precious and The Blind Side, ceremonies director Shankman was trying to make this year the Urban Oscars. Which is lame and pandering. Plus, I really could do without the hour-long Salute to Circle Jerks that were those recycled-from-last-year Best Actor/Actress presentation medleys. I know that fabulous millionaires should always, every day, be celebrated as fabulous millionaires, but some of us have work tomorrow.

All told, I'm thrilled for Kathy Bigs and thought that Sandy gave a lovely acceptance speech, but the whole show was fatally devoid of tension. Do you think that the great game of Oscar predicting, and the unending Wehrmacht of pre-Oscars awards shows, are ruining the Oscars?

Brian Moylan: Yes, I think it is. Just like all of us, the people who vote these things are reading the press, buying into the conventional wisdom, and swayed by the immense Oscar campaigns that the studios are waging. That's why we're so fixated on the show itself, the acceptance speeches, and what people wear. Combining all that into once example, Mo'Nique, looking lovely in her blue gown, said her her acceptance speech that she was glad that a performance was awarded and not politics. Way to say you're better than everyone else, Mo'Nique. She mostly kept it classy, but her win was as much about politics as the whole thing.

Yes, the show was a bit more narcissistic than usual, with the whole Best Actor circle jerk, that strange unnecessary moment that opened the show with all the acting nominees on stage, and the completely gratutious John Hughes tribute that was really an excuse for a Molly Ringwald to remind us that she too can look great in a Cleopatra costume. The only person who kept it really classy was Sandra Bullock, looking radiant and giving what is perhaps the Platonic ideal of an acceptance speach. Why do you try to make me like you, Sandy? Why?

Richard, did you think it was too political? Did you hate the lamp shade set as much as I did? And, please, can you tell me what the fuck Kathy Ireland was doing with her prosthetic arm on the red carpet?

Richard Lawson: Girl, the most important thing about this year's Oscars was the ever-deepening mystery of What the Fuck Happened to Kathy Ireland. No one has any idea. Not even Kathy Ireland. A travesty.

The lampshade set was weird and unsettling. If there's one thing the Oscars should never aspire to be, it's homey. Nothing about the Academy Awards is homey. It's the most glitterated, sequin-swooning night of the year, and should never be shouldered with sad little table lamps in an effort to make us feel like this is America's Living Room. We watch because of the remove of money and fame, not in spite of it.

I thought that nothing was political! Disappointingly so. I love me a good Sean Penn saying things about "great shame" and Michael Moore eliciting boos from a wealth-fattened room of political border-dancers. Was The Hurt Locker political? I don't know. I don't, honestly, know quite what that movie was trying to say, other than that it wasn't really trying to say anything at all. At least that seemed to be the big tagline push during its Oscar campaigning. If we want to give sparkling golden dildos to movies that are rather murky and elusive in their political intent, why didn't Children of Men (perhaps the finest film ever made, in this humble blogger's opinion) win every award possible a few years ago? I sincerely enjoyed Hurt Locker, but it didn't have that grand-cheese Oscar oompf that we've come to expect from Hollywood's gildedest night.

Before I turn in, I'll ask you this, Brian. Was 2009 ultimately a bad year for movies? And does it say anything that Up in the Air, a film about How We Live Now if ever there was one, got completely shut out?

Brian Moylan: No, Mr. Lawson, I don't think 2009 was a bad year for movies. In fact, I saw many a great one. I think the problem—if you want to call it that—is that there has become a yawning devide between populist movies and creative movies, and this year was definitely the showdown between the two. Avatar was seen by just about every person in America and it was a finely-wrought miracle of technology. However, its script sucked, its characters were undeveloped, and the story completely boring. The Hurt Locker, I believe, is now the lowest-grossing Best Picture ever. It was a great movie, but one many people will never see and fail to care about and had little of the whizz-bang filmmaking or marketing that a huge budget will get you.

Just about the only three pictures nominated that could be considered but critical and financial successes are Up, District 9, and Up in the Air. One didn't win because it's a cartoon, one because it had aliens, and the third because, well, it was just the wrong year. Any other moment, and Up in the Air would be right up there along with all the other winners. Maybe because it had both (and truly is a fine piece of cinema) it deserved to win.

But the reason why something like The Hurt Locker won so many awards is the same reason that the show was a complete self-referential mess. It is because The Oscars are not about America, they are about Hollywood, and Hollywood is under the impression that the people who watch movies care as much about the people who make movies as the people who make movies care about the people who make movies. They don't really care about what sells tickets, pleases people, makes film critics smile, or will help you win your Oscar pool. They only care about themselves, about telling us what is good for us, about rewarding hard workers, and about settling old scores. This night is our one chance to get a glimpse into the rich, glittering tower of the movie business, a magic mirror into their beautiful world, and they use that mirror only to reflect back on themselves, and blind us with diverted brilliance in the process.

La gala de los Oscar 2010 comienza, como es de rigor, con el desfile de estrellas más o menos brillantes por la alfombra roja. Es el momento de lucir los vestidos (ellas) y las mejores sonrisas (ellos).

Los invitados recorren un ancho pasillo de moqueta roja con techo transparente y cubierto -es una tarde lluviosa la de hoy en Los Ángeles- bajo las luces de los flashes y los gritos de admiradores. Uno de ellos es Pedro Almodóvar, vistiendo pajarita blanca y gafas de sol. "Debería cambiar de idioma y hacer alguna película en inglés", declara el director español desde el epicentro del cine más glamuroso del planeta. "Ahora no estoy nada nervioso -dijo a la prensa española que le asedió a la entrada del teatro-, cuando eres candidato llegas a la gala angustiado, después de estar mucho tiempo de promoción. Pero ahora estoy mucho más tranquilo. Es más divertido".

Penélope Cruz ha hecho su aparición. Ella va a ser la primera presentadora de un premio de la gala; está "nerviosa" confiesa, pero no por su candidatura a Mejor Actriz de Reparto, un premio que está convencida de que no ganará. ¿La apuesta de Penélope? Mo'nique, la actriz madre de Precious. Penélope ha elegido un vestido color vino de Donna Karan con cola por detrás y palabra de honor por delante. El pelo, recogido, como a ella le gusta.

2:30 hora española (17:30 hora local): comienza la gala

Un arranque inusual para la gala: los candidatos a mejores actores y actrices firan fijamente a la platea desde el escenario. El actor Neil Patrick Harris (Un médico precoz, Cómo conocí a vuestra madre) es el primero en hablar: "ustedes se preguntarán que hago yo aquí". Y el actor, con chaqueta brillante, lo explica con un número musical, en cuya canción dijo, por ejemplo, "no puedo pensar en el Botox sin todos vosotros" o "no puedes sacar a James Cameron de su CGI".

Él da paso a la pareja de presentadores: Alec Baldwin y Steve Martin. "Esta noche hay dos presentadores y he despido a mi agente por no ser yo uno de ellos" canto Neil Patrick Harris. Los anfitriones, en un recurso muy habitual de las galas, hicieron un recorrido por los personajes más destacados entre el público. El primer objetivo de sus bromas es Meryl Streep, "la que más veces ha perdido", uns actriz que ostenta el mayor número de nominaciones. "Todo el que ha trabajo alguna vez con Meryl Streep se pregunta qué hay con todo este fetichismo hitleriano", dijeron, mientras la actriz no podía contener la risa. "La pesadísima" Hellen Mirren también reciben deportivamente sus comentarios.
Monique es una cómica y no dan oscars a los cómics, le dice Alec Baldwin a Steve Martin, añadiendo "bueno, no sé a quién se lo estoy contando". Los presentadores se pusieron unas gafas 3D para fijarse en la presencia de James Cameron. Hicieron referencia al que se considera gran duelo de la noche, recordando que Katheryn Bigelow -la directora de En tierra hostil- estuvo casada con el director de Avatar. Bromeron comentando que Bigelow, "de la ilusión que le hacía compartir nominación" con su ex, le mandó "una cesta con un temporizador" y él "la correspondió regalándole un Toyota".

Presentaron a Penélope Cruz diciendo que su agente le recomendó que cambiara de nombre. Ella entrega el primer premio de la noche, el galardón al Mejor Actor de Reparto, que se lo lleva Christoph Waltz por su papel de caza judíos en Malditos bastardos, de Quentin Tarantino. "Oscar y Penélope, eso es un über bingo", comenzó diciendo Waltz. "Aquí es donde vamos, pero vamos por el otro lado", contó que le dijo Tarantino al presentarle el guión de la película.

Steve Carrell y Cameron Díaz dan paso a unas declaraciones, por llamarlas así, de personajes de películas de animación como Coraline, el protagonista de Up o el sapo y el cocodrilo de Tiana y el sapo. De esta manera se presenta el premio a Mejor Película de Animación, que le ha correspondido al título de Pixar-Disney Up. "Nunca soñé que hacer un libro de fotos de mi cuaderno de matemáticas de tecero me podría llevar a esto", dijo el director Pete Docter.

"And the winner is..." de nuevo

Miley Cirus y Amanda Seyfried presentaron el premio a la Mejor Canción Original -The weary kind- para Crazy Heart compuesta por Ryan Bingham y T Bone Burnett. Al escuchar el anuncio del premio Jeff Bridges, actor de la película y nominado a Mejor Actor, se puso en pie para aplaudir.

La actriz y guionista Tina Fey y el actor Robert Downey Jr introducen el Premio al Mejor Guión con la mejor presentación de un premio hasta el momento, en un gala que no se está detacando por la calidad de su guión, precisamente. La guionista y el actor ponen de relieve las diferencias entre lo que desean los guionistas y los actores y cómo se hacen la vida imposible los unos a los otros... del amor al odio. El ganador del premio ha sido para Mark Boal por En tierra hostil. Periodista y corresponsal en Irak, dedicó el premio a la directora del film y a los soldado que están en el país. "Como reportero volví de Irak con la idea de una historia sobre esos hombres en las trincheras de una guerra impopular. Pensé que podia ser una buena película. El resultado ha excedido ampliamente mis expectativas", dijo sobre la película dirigida por Bigelow. Además, quiso "dar las gracias y dedicar esto a nuestras tropas, a las 115.000 personas que siguen en Irak, a los 120.000 de Afganistán y a los más de 30.000 heridos y 4.000 que no lograron volver a sus hogares".

Los actores Molly Ringwald y Matthew Broderick, dos importantes actores de las películas del gran John Hughes (El club de los cinco, La chica de rosa, 16 velas) rindieron homenaje al director que mejor filmó la adolescencia, fallecido el 6 de agosto de 2009. "Trataba a los jóvenes no como niños sino como adultos" dijeron los actores de sus películas, que aplaudieron a la familia de Hughes, asistentes a la ceremonia.

"No hemos dañado a ningún logotipo durante la realización de la película", dijo el productor del estupendo corto de animación Logorama, Mejor Corto de Animación, que presenta un Los Ángeles totalmente forrado por marcas comerciales; el corto español La dama y la muerte de Javier Recio se quedó pues a la puerta de ganar la estatuilla; además añadió que "como productor de la película" debía "agradecer a los 3.000 sponsors no oficiales que aparecen en ella". Music By Prudence es el Mejor Corto Documental, que recogió su director Roger Ross Williams ("hace dos años cuando tomé un avión y fui a Zimbabwe, nunca imaginé ni en mis sueños más salvajes que acabaría aquí"). Y, el Mejor Corto de Ficción ha sido para The new tenants.

Hilarante la aparición de Ben Stiller como un na'vi de Avatar para presentar el premio al Mejor Maquillaje, que ha sido para la película de JJ Abrahams Star Trek, película que sólo competía contra otras dos: La Reina Victoria e Il Divo. Sacha Baron Cohen tendría que haber formado pareja con Stiller para presentar este premio pero fue vetado por la Academia al haber escrito un chiste que podía ofender a James Cameron. El creador de personajes como Bruno o Borat iba a aparecer embarazo y pensaba declarar que el padre era el propio Cameron. Recogieron el premio Barney Burman, Mindy Hall y Joel Harlow quien dijo que su equipo lo formaban 40 personas y que les nombrarían "en el backstage".

Los espectadores han notado que tras unos años de extrema corrección política en los que los presentadores de los premios anunciaban el ganador con "And the Oscar goes to" para que no hubiera tan claros vencedores y perdedores, se ha recuperado la vieja fórmula "And the winner is". Uno de esos "winner" ha sido el emocionado Geoffrey Fletcher, guionista de Precious, recogió el premio al Mejor Guión Adaptado. "Este premio es para todos aquellos que trabajan en un sueño cada día", dijo. "Yo le escribí el discurso", improvisó Steve Martin mientras Fletcher abandonaba el escenario.

El auditorio del Teatro Kodak se puso en pue para aplaudir con más respeto a Roger Corman y Lauren Bacall, receptores del Premio Honorífico, que para ahorrar tiempo permanecieron en sus asientos y no recibieron los premios en el escenario.

Un concepto de fotografía poco ortodoxo

Robin Williams presentó el Oscar a la Mejor Actriz de Reparto. La ganadora ha sido Mo'Nique por su papel en Precious. Un premio cantado que la propia Penélope Cruz, candidata por Nine y que esperaba sentada junto a Javier Bardem el veredicto, aseguró que esta actriz de comedia -por primera vez en un papel dramático- y presentadora de televisión sería la ganadora. Mo'Nique agradeció a la Academia "por demostrar que esto puede ir sobre la interpretación y no sobre la política".

Sigourney Weaver presentó el premio a la Mejor Dirección Artística, que ha ido destinado a Avatar. Rick Carter, Robert Stromberg y Kim Sinclair recogieron el premio, que Carter agradeció a Cameron por su "profunda visión". Stromberg dijo que hace 13 años los doctores le dijeron que no sobreviviría y que "este sueño jamás sucedería".

"Dos puercas de primera" fue el pie de Steve Martin para Sarah Jessica Parker y Tom Ford, que salieron para presentar el premio al Diseño de Vestuario. Un galardón para La Reina Victoria de Sandy Powell que declaró "¡ya tengo dos de estos!".

El premio para la Mejor Edición de Sonido y la Mejor Mezcla de Sonido ha sido, en las dos ocasiones para En tierra hostil, un trabajo realizado por Paul N.J. Ottosson.

Avatar recolectó otro de los premios técnicos de la noche, la Mejor Dirección de Fotografía, un premio presentado por Sandra Bullock y que ha recibido el italiano Mauro Fiore. Un premio extraño para una película realizada prácticamente por ordenador. Fiore agradeció al "visionario" Cameron.

Tras este, Demi Moore dio paso al tradicional recuerdo a los fallecidos del mundo del cine en el último año, las imágenes fueron pasando mientras se escuchaba la canción In my life de los Beatles. Rápidamente los seguidores de la gala que comentaban su transcurso enganchados a Internet apreciaron que Farrah Fawcet no estaba incluida.

'En tierra hostil', imponiéndose

La música de Up, ha sido la que ha merecido la Mejor Banda Sonora Original, compuesta por Michael Giacchino. "Chicos, si queréis ser creativos hacedlo porque no es una pérdida de tiempo", ha dicho después de recordar cómo su padre le prestaba su cámara de 8 mm.

Como no podía ser de otra manera, Avatar se ha impuesto ante las películas espaciales District 9 y Star Trek en los Mejores Efectos Visuales. Joe Letteri ha explicado que "Avatar es una película sobre aprender a ver el mundo de nuevas maneras" y, por ello, agradeció como muchos de sus compañeros de equipo, a James Cameron.

El premio al Mejor Documental ha sido por The Cove, una cinta que denuncia la caza de los delfines. Uno de los premiados mostró un cartel que pedía que se enviaran mensajes de texto con la palabra "delfin" a un número de teléfono. Un plano que rápidamente la realización de la gala evitó para que no saliera en pantalla. Su co director Fisher Stevens explicó el "honor de trabajar en esta película e intentar hacer un film de entretenimiento que además intenta iluminar a la gente".

El matrimonio de editores que ha trabajado en En tierra hostil, Bob Murawski y Chris Innis, recogieron el galardón al Mejor Montaje. Ellos agradecieron, entre otros, a Sam Raimi que les dio su primer trabajo. Además, agradecieron a la Academia por premiar una película "sin compromisos" para la que no hicieron "ninguna proyección previa o grupos de discusión o notas de estudio".

Quentin Tarantino y Pedro Almodóvar salieron juntos para otorgar el premio a la Mejor Película de Habla No Inglesa. Se declararon admiradores mútuos y Almodóvar confeso que, en realida, no entendía bien lo que se dice en las películas del director de Pulp fiction. La cinta argentina El secreto de sus ojos de Juan José Campanella se ha impuesto a La cinta blanca de Haneke. Campanella agradeció a la Academia por no considerar el idioma de los Na'vi como Habla No Inglesa. El equipo de la película mandó "un abrazo a los hermanos de Chile", en español, en los últimos segundos de su discurso de agradecimiento.

Recta final: los grandes premios

Kate Winslet hizo su aparición en el escenario para dar el Oscar al Mejor Actor -con la fórmula "and the Oscar goes to"- a Jeff Bridges por Crazy Heart, quien alzó, entre gritos suyos y vítores de la platea, la estatuilla hacia el cielo y agracedió a su padre y a su madre. Aunque la Academia ha pedido a los premiados que no agradezcan a la familia, los elegidos no han hecho caso de la recomendación, como el expresivo y eufórico Bridges. Bridges recordó que sus padres amaban el espectáculo y que hacían que "los niños les estretuviéramos en sus fiestas". Ha recordado también como su padre, Lloyd Bridges, le "sentaba en la cama" para enseñarle "todo lo básico para hacer un papel en Sea Hunt", la serie de televisión en la que actuaba su padre.

Sean Penn le dio a Sandra Bullock el Oscar a la Mejor Actriz por el primer papel dramático de su vida, en The Blind Side. Ha sido su primer Oscar, recibido un día después de haber conseguido un Razzie (el anti-Oscar a las peores películas e interpretaciones) por Loca obsesión. Entre lágrimas, Bullock, que interpreta el papel de una madre, agradeció la educación que le dio la suya. Quiso compartir el premio con las otras nominadas, especialmente Meryl Streep.

Barbra Streisand fue la elegida para dar la sorpresa al que sería el Mejor Director del año 2009 según la Academia del Cine de Hollywood. Y, por primera vez en la historia, no ha sido un Director sino Directora: Kathryn Bigelow por la película sobre los soldados en Irak En tierra hostil. "No estaría aquí sino fuese por Mark Boal quien ha arreisgado su vida" ha dicho la directora sobre el guionista de la gala, también oscarizado. Bigelow ha dedicado el premio "a las mujeres y los hombres del Ejército que arriesgan todos los días su vida en Irak, Afganistán y el mundo entero y deseo que vuelvan a casa sanos y salvos".

Y casi sin mediar tiempo entre un premio y otro, Tom Hanks ha anunciado rápidamente, pues la gala llevaba media hora de retraso, que la Mejor Película era también En tierra hostil, ante una desconcertada Bigelow, que aún no había abandonado las bambalinas del escenario.

Kathryn Bigelow made history by being the first woman to earn the Best Director statuette, besting ex-husband James Cameron, and she told the audience, "There's no other way to describe it -- it's the moment of a lifetime," dedicating her win, "To the men and women all over the world who wear a uniform: They are there for us, and we're there for them." The Oscar gold was evenly distributed this year, marking the first time the Academy has nominated ten Best Picture nominees since 1943. 'Avatar,' 'Up' and 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' also walked away with multiple wins. They were nominated alongside fellow Best Picture nominees 'The Blind Side,' 'District 9,' 'An Education,' 'Inglourious Basterds,' 'A Serious Man' and 'Up in the Air.' Hier, elle recevait le Razzie Awards de la pire actrice pour All About Steve et ce soir, c'est un Oscar qu'elle reçoit, des mains de Sean Penn , pour son rôle dans The Blind Side . Elle prend du temps pour remercier les autres actrices qu'elle vient de battre, en précisant que Meryl Streep embrasse très bien ou que le talent de Carey Mulligan l'a rend malade. Los Ángeles (EE.UU.).- La ceremonia de la 82 edición de los Óscar comenzó hoy en el teatro Kodak de Los Ángeles, una gala presentada por Steve Martin y Alec Baldwin donde las películas "Avatar" y "The Hurt Locker" parten como favoritas, con nueve candidaturas cada una.

El primer premio de la velada será el de mejor actor secundario, para el que el actor austríaco Christoph Waltz parte como favorito por su papel en "Inglourious Basterds".

El galardón a la mejor actriz de reparto, al que aspira Penélope Cruz por "Nine", será el décimo Óscar de la gala, mientras que la estatuilla a la mejor película extranjera será el vigésimo premio de la ceremonia.

Entre las celebridades que entregarán las estatuillas doradas se encuentran Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Cameron Díaz, Jennifer López, Sarah Jessica Parker, Demi Moore, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, John Travolta, Robert Downey Jr., Miley Cyrus, Zack Efron, Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart, Sean Penn, Quentin Tarantino y los españoles Penélope Cruz y Pedro Almodóvar.

La retransmisión oficial dio comienzo a las 17.30 hora local de Los Ángeles (01.30 GMT, del lunes).

El programa de entrega de los Óscar tendrá una duración de tres horas.

The rest of the world is currently busy predicting tonight's big winners, but we all know it's not the statues that we'll be excitedly gossiping about tomorrow. It's time to make the predictions that really matter:

My favorite part of any awards show is the super-predictable nature of it all. Someone will embarrass themselves! Someone will wear a hideous dress. Someone will get caught making a dumb face in the audience! And someone will snub Ryan Seacrest! But who? There aren't any Vegas odds on such things (are there?) but this year, we have several contenders in several highly important categories:

The Brangelaniston Edit: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Aniston are all reportedly skipping the ceremony this year, due to career and general loneliness concerns, which is bad news for the editors of the show, who love to get those awkward camera shots of Aniston's face whenever Jolie or Pitt appear on stage. Yet even with the absence of Jolie, Pitt, and Aniston, it's a pretty safe bet that the Brangelaniston edit shall live on, in the form of a "Battle of the Exes" edit between Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron. Other possible contenders: Reese Witherspoon/Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon/Abbie Cornish/Ryan Phillippe, Shots of Kim Basinger glaring at host Alec Baldwin via satellite.

The Worst Dressed Recognition Gasp: Looking at this picture, it appears Jessica Biel's ensemble from last year's Oscars photographed better than it filmed, as I distinctly remember Biel's appearance on the red carpet causing the first outbreaks of "OMG" and "WTF?" on our Oscar live blog. There are plenty of "meh" dresses on the red carpet, but only a select few cause you to sharply inhale with the knowledge that this person is absolutely, 100%, going to be on every worst dressed list in the world the following day. It's a gasp that is followed by pity, and then disgust, and then a bit more pity, and then eventually you forget about the whole gasping thing because Ryan Gosling shows up in a tux and you forget how to breathe in general. So whose attire will trigger the first worst dressed recognition gasp this year? It's hard to say, as Biel would not have been an odds-on choice in the past, so you really never know who is going to fug it up rather hardcore on the red carpet. Possible Contenders: Blake Lively, Sandra Bullock, Anyone from the cast of Twilight.

The Couple That Makes It Official: Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt famously outed themselves as a couple at the 1999 Emmy Awards, and just last year Aniston arrived to the Oscars with date John Mayer, providing the public with a very official and glamorous view of the pair. This year's "maybe possibly official" couple appears to be Charlize Theron and The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner, who are reportedly considering attending the Vanity Fair Oscar after-party together. Other Possible Contenders: I'm not sure, actually! What do you think?

Unintentionally Hilarious Accessory: Last year, Philip Seymour Hoffman arrived at the ceremony wearing a hat, which he later explained was due to his hair being a bit of a mess thanks to a part he was playing. And thank goodness for that, really, as spotting Hoffman looking like a bored burglar whenever the camera panned his way was really one of the few moments I remember from last year's show, mostly because it was so ridiculous and weird. Possible Contenders: A brave young actress attempts to wear a high fashion hat but doesn't quite pull it off, James Cameron gets extensions in order to tie his hair into one of those living Na'vi braid things, Nicole Kidman attempts to bring a facial expression.

The Upset: Ok. I guess this kind of counts as an award-related prediction, but still: going into last year's ceremony, it looked as though Mickey Rourke was a sure bet for Best Actor...until Sean Penn's name was called. This year's Best Actress category is already a bit up in the air, and the Avatar/Hurt Locker battle is extremely tight, so I'm going to call an upset in one of the Supporting categories, where Mo'Nique and Christoph Waltz have essentially a 100% chance of winning, if only because I think it would be the only chance of a true shocker, though it would be equally shocking to see Jeff Bridges lose the Best Actor trophy. Other Possible Contenders: Gabby Sidibe defeating both Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock for the Best Actress award. Can you imagine how awesome her speech would be?
