For just about everyone else, the sudden sound of partisan percussion provides a cue to switch off. The differences between the parties are still important, but at a time when Westminster as a whole seems compromised, and with painful choices coming whoever is in power, it is becoming tougher to identify deeply with squabbling tribes who blame everything on one another. And this is particularly so among progressives, for whom poetic hopes have been smothered by the prosaic realities of 13 years in government.

This is the context in which John Kampfner – a former New Statesman editor and a biographer of Robin Cook – yesterday pledged himself to the Liberal Democrats, and thus the cries of "betrayal" from his old friends in the Labour party may be muted. In a pamphlet and an article on these pages, Kampfner offered an analysis of New Labour failings – the love of money, the penal populism and the failure to fix politics – which is shared by many with radical hearts. Kampfner's gambit coincided with the publication of a collection of essays by the leftist journal Soundings which made a different case for transcending old divides, calling for a joint front between "social democrats, liberals, greens and civic nationalists" – less a Blairite big political tent than a collection of several small tents pitching up together.

One of the great common causes for those grappling for a radical post-party politics is reform of an electoral system which traditionally locked the old duopoly in place. The great difficulty, however, is that – for now at least – the winner-takes-all rules remain in place, presenting a formidable challenge to the efforts of disparate forces. It is also true that Kampfner and social democrats minded to follow his lead might find themselves rather less comfortable than they are expecting within a Liberal Democrat party which has taken a more traditionally liberal turn under Mr Clegg's lead. Today's Lib Dems are a distinctive force, not one which promises to redo what Labour has done, only better. The party is giving priority to reducing taxes for people on middle incomes, rather than any great new surge in social spending.

The old party politics is not fit for the hour, and perhaps it should not count any longer. Yet those who seek to transcend it – by reaching across old divides or swapping sides – discover that its clutches are hard to escape. Fair votes would allow for clearer choices, but the old parties continue to thwart hopes of that, and so our politics remain stuck in the old partisan rut.

Labour

Conservatives

Liberal Democrats

Electoral reform

General election 2010

guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Argentina's endeavours to force its colonial ambitions on a small country, against the freely expressed wishes of its people, ignore our basic right to self-determination.

"Anyone who studies the tortuous history and law of the Falklands will know that Argentina's claim to the islands was certainly strong," Jenkins says. But their claim to a territory 300 miles away is neither logical nor valid. Falklands inhabitants did not replace an indigenous population because there was none. The islands were claimed by Britain in 1765, long before Argentina existed as a country, and have been permanently settled since 1833. Some families, like mine, can now boast eight or nine generations on the islands. The Falklands are an overseas territory of the UK, with internal matters governed by a democratically elected legislative assembly, of which I am a member.

Jenkins talks of Argentina regularly protesting about their rights to the islands to "the UN's decolonisation committee, supported by other post-imperial states in South and North America". But the annual vote in this committee is a sham – the Islands are not a colony and the debate there is therefore an irrelevance. More relevant are the European convention on human rights and the international covenant on civil and political rights, both of which endorse the principles of self-determination.

We have repeatedly attempted to work with Argentina, and agreed a joint declaration on co-operation on oil exploration in 1995. This was renounced by Argentina in 2007. Co-operation on sustainable fisheries through a joint commission was a way for the Falklands and Argentina to conserve South Atlantic stocks through the exchange of scientific data and the setting of sustainable catch levels. Argentina not only withdrew from the commission but set unsustainably high quotas in some fish stocks.

Jenkins states that "Argentina has not threatened military action over the Ocean Guardian" (the oil rig currently drilling in our waters). But it is clear that our large neighbour is attempting to achieve by economic warfare what it failed to achieve by military means.

It has threatened sanctions against companies holding licences to fish in Falklands waters and tried to exclude our representatives from participating at international conferences. It prevents charter flights from other South American countries flying to the islands, and is now attempting to disrupt our oil exploration by threats to hinder shipping. These are hardly the acts of a friendly and peaceful neighbour.

We remain eternally grateful to those who liberated us from the Argentine aggression in 1982. By referring to that time as "the silliest of wars", Jenkins insults their memory and diminishes their incredible achievement.

Jenkins believes us to be an "expensive legacy of Empire". He should be aware that the Islands are self-financing – except for defence, which is purely because of the continued Argentine claim to my country. And our government has expressed the wish to contribute more to these costs, should oil be discovered in commercial quantities.

Falkland Islands

Argentina

United Nations

Oil

Foreign policy

Politics past

Jan Cheek

guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

So I'm backing the Lib Dems, 9 March) is amnesic and myopic. His memory of Labour "changes for the better" omits the highest level of employment in UK history, the massive increases in NHS, education, science and overseas development investment, child and pension tax credits, and several other large contributions to social justice.

He evades the current reality of a government fighting against recession instead of fatalistically surrendering to it as the Tories did in the 80s and 90s, and will – if they get the chance – in a future of nominal market regulation. He ignores the future choice between Labour's measured halving of public debt over four years and the Conservative fiscal slicing "from day one", despite the expert warnings that such a course would inflict economic recession and social regression.

And then, having recognised the reality that Margaret Thatcher's best result was won with 44% of the vote because the rest of the electorate was divided (mainly) between Labour and SDP/Liberals, John campaigns for Liberal votes in 2010 – not tactically, but everywhere! No anti-tribalism can justify that inconsistency – especially when "a more pluralist politics" is only realistically likely to come through implementation of Labour's proposals for the alternative vote.

John Kampfner calls the memory and values of Robin Cook in aid. Robin was an inveterate, lifelong opponent of dilettante self-indulgence and always a principled, gutsy democratic socialist, never a sunshine soldier. He would see John Kampfner's "platform" as a scaffold, not a launch pad, for progressives.

Neil Kinnock

Labour, House of Lords

• Jackie Ashley is right that our politics traditionally polarises at a national level (Do right for politics, Nick. Refuse to enter a coalition, 8 March). But I think it's wrong to suggest this is somehow "the English way". It's well known that the voting system favours the bigger parties. And indeed I've heard Labour and Tory candidates together clearly sharing their desire to keep the Lib Dems out.

But the fact that the pragmatic English voter recognises this and votes accordingly doesn't mean it's in our genes: look at the dozens of councils across the country, like Camden, where parties work well together locally – flexibly, both respecting and challenging each other's views. Nick Clegg's position should be similarly challenging and flexible, to represent the new politics essential to our times – which even the English will eventually enjoy.

Cllr Chris Naylor

Liberal Democrat cabinet member for homes and housing strategy, Camden

• The Lib Dems may be many things, but anyone living in Camden or Brent will be surprised to hear them called progressive. In both boroughs they have run the council since 2006 with support from the Tories, cutting and privatising services and hiking up charges on essentials like rubbish collection and meals on wheels.

Lib Dem Camden's latest brainwave is to auction off council homes to speculators, who then make huge profits by "flipping" them weeks later. Hardly a progressive solution to solving the chronic overcrowding many families face. They are also cutting funding to UK Online centres by more than four-fifths, hurting those who can't afford a computer.

These may be tawdry details compared with the lofty goals of foreign policy or human rights, but they make a real difference to the quality of life or the poorest and most vulnerable in our community.

Mike Katz

Chair, Hampstead & Kilburn Labour party

• How should the liberally minded left vote at the general election? Labour loyalists tell me to vote Labour as any alternative will in most cases let a Tory in. While this may be true, it is hardly a positive reason to vote for a party. John Kampfner's answer is to vote Liberal Democrat. At least his reasons are positive. However, I'm not quite sure that we are ready for that yet. An alternative is suggested by Polly Toynbee's article (This once-in-a-generation bill could define the election, 9 March). If this government ensures the constitutional reform and governance bill – with its provision for an AV referendum – gets through, we'll vote Labour. If the bill fails from lack of Labour support, we'll vote for the Liberal Democrats.

Arthur Gould

Loughborough, Leicestershire

Liberal Democrats

Labour

General election 2010

Nick Clegg

Conservatives

Electoral reform

Proportional representation

Constitutional reform

guardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Private international high schools where English is not the language of instruction are hoping they will be eligible for planned annual subsidies of ¥120,000 per student, according to school officials.
Unlike at more expensive English-based international schools, the subsidies, which would be disbursed at the discretion of the education ministry, would go a long way to covering tuition.

Yahoo! Answers: Latest Questions

So this is what I eat in one day currently.
bowl of cereal with milk
apple
another cup of cereal
100 calorie bag of popcorn
bowl of soup
another apple
some bread or something.
Up until now I have been wanting to loose weight. Now I just want to gain muscle so I can do well in track which I recently joined. I am 5'5" and I weigh 121 pounds. I know from experience that if I go above 1,200 calories a day I WILL gain weight. Idk why, but I guess I have a nonexistent metabolism. What should I eat to help me?

Ask MetaFilter

Can I train myself to not to obsess about some (slightly) pesky barking dogs?

There's a small farm next door, and a little house where the caretaker lives with her 3 dogs. Our property is separated by a small forested gully, and there's roughly 350 feet from our house to their fenced yard.

The barking was never an issue when leaves were on the trees, but during winter we can hear the dogs barking (very faintly) from inside our house. They don't bark continuously, just a few barks every 10 minutes or so and only during daylight hours. Of course they'll go nuts if a delivery truck or jogger passes, but nothing out of the ordinary for a dog.

I've developed some sort of obsession about these dogs. I loathe their barking, even though I can barely hear it from within our house. When I walk by the windows facing them, I always check to see if they're out. I think I'm starting to "hear" barking when they're not actually barking. Sometimes I can't think about our house without thinking in terms of how much I hate those damn dogs. Our setting is just so peaceful when they're not outside; I'm just a wreck that they're messing it up.

I recognize that the problem might be me. My spouse doesn't mind the dogs, other than the fact that they bother me.

Is there anything I can do to desensitize myself to this problem?

I don't feel in control of my own happiness here.

What are some best practices for taking a relationship from long distance to not?

I'm sure many MeFites have been in this situation... my long distance relationship (yes, we met online) is about to become short distance. Person A is moving across the country to join Person B. We'd like some tips.

A few things we have covered: we have known each other for several years and plan to get married soon; this isn't a whim. We decided to create a "buffer zone" by not moving in together right away. We've discussed financial management and decided to retain individual accounts for now and open a joint account when we do move in together (while retaining the individual accounts).

But neither of us has ever done this before, and I'm sure there are people who have, both successfully and unsuccessfully, and there have got to be best practices.

Anon because Person A has yet to give notice at work.

What songs make your heart feel like it's about to burst with life?

This will obviously be different for everyone, and these songs may not be *good* songs. But I'm interested, because I'd like to add to my own list.

FWIW - I haven't identified a theme,* but my list includes songs like:

- Fleet Foxes, "Your Protector"
- Charlie Daniels, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"
- Fac Alliance, "Mariama"
- Bob Dylan, Hurricane
- Bob Dylan, Seven Curses
- Taylor Swift, Love Story (sort of)
- Dolly Parton, "Jolene"
- Steve Earle, Johnny Walker's Blues (at least it used to)

*Can you?

Ask MetaFilter

How to respond to deceit/lying in a professional setting? - Professionals lying in order to save face after unprofessional behavior.

After moving to NYC from Scandinavia, my (American) wife and I have repeatedly faced situations in which clever, well-educated, and succesful people try to make me (or her) responsible for their own mistakes by lying or being deceitful. Most of the time, people either forget to do something they promised, they think they are too busy/important to listen to me (her) and thus misinterpret something, or are simply lazy. One example of many:

Job application:

An HR-person has suggested a date for my job interview. I reply and ask for a more precise time and location. She never gets back to me. The date of the scheduled interview comes, and I assume she has blown me off and does not want me to show up at all. She then emails me, asking why I did not show up. I respond kindly that she has not confirmed with me, and I do not even know the address, precise time, location or anything.

She claims to have sent a confirmation email with details, and states that it must have ended up in my junk mail. I have added her to my preferred sender list, and my junk mail is empty. It does not auto-delete. So, I know she is lying.

We have been thinking how to respond to these incidents. We talked about this issue, and realized that

a) accepting this kind of behavior by personally accepting blame and (saying that I missed the email, when I did not) is degrading and mentally unhealthy in the long run. If I do this, I essentially let people treat me as their personal dumping ground. Still, this is an easy way out, but may also cause professional problems later on.

b) stating explicitly that I have taken care of my part flawlessly, and that the person in question is lying, always makes people furious. They really get mad, and many times start yelling and freaking out. Still, it is personally tempting, as it is inherently wrong to even implicitly blame other people for your own mistakes. Further, confronting the liar openly is psychologically sound, as it is likely to lessen lying and I don’t let him/her to push me. However, it can really burn bridges.

c) There is a middle ground by responding that my email works fine (she is white listed, and my junk mail is empty). Then, the problem must be in her email system. This is a softer approach to confront the liar. Still, we both felt a little bit shitty afterwords, as this approach is essentially playing the liar’s game, and the liars have a tendency to be crabby about this response.

* * *

Q1: What kind of strategies do you use to mitigate these kinds of issues in your everyday life?

Q2: What is the socially ”correct way” (according to good manners) to behave in this situation? Especially if it is a job/professionally related situation.

Q3: What is the logic of the liar? From our standpoint, it is more respectable to admit one’s mistake, as it is simply human and everybody makes mistakes, than lose trust and seem like a total jerk by lying and getting caught immediately. For example, how come a Harvard etc. grad (or someone with extremely high qualifications in their field) can be so naive that he/she believes he/she can get away with that?

Q4: Other thoughts? Do we just have to learn to suck it up? Or, how do we get past other people trying to dump the responsibility of the mess they have created/their own faults or lack of organization into our laps?

We saw this already.

Thanks.
Audio-filter: Where should I put my new Subwoofer?

I recently purchased a KRK 10s and I was wondering where I should place it in my room to get the most out of the sub. I have read a few things online about subwoofers but they all seem to pertain to home theater setup. I am an amateur DJ and I am setting this up in my rectangular bedroom that measures 20' by 15'. My desk (where I will be mixing and where my monitors are already set up) is on one of the shorter walls. I am running into problems when I place the sub directly under the desk (actually just a fold out table) because I can't hear the bass when sitting at the desk. when I move the sub over to the corner to my right I can hear it a little bit, but the place where I can hear the most bass is still the center of the room. I really want to be getting the loudest response from the bass when I am sitting, that way i don't have to crank it to hear it, disturbing the neighbors and such. How can get rid of this pocket of no bass, right where I need it!?

What do you snack on when you are hungry but you probably shouldn't be?

I don't just mean 'what is a healthy snack for snacktime' with this question :) I am referring to those times where you have had enough to eat, objectively, but are still hungry for whatever reason (hormones, whatever). You should not 'need' to eat given what/when you last did. What is a good snack to minimize the caloric damage in times like that> I am getting bored of carrot sticks...

(I also can't eat popcorn or any corn products due to an allergy)

(no flax or tree nuts either)

The head and its scales are characteristic. This native British reptile is quite harmless, but looks dangerous. Was this a symbol of Elizabeth's vaunted firm but benign approach to her subjects? Or did the slow worm have a meaning in Tudor portraiture, which would be easily understood at the time?

Susan Craggs

Neston, Cheshire

• I was nodding my head in approval as I read your leader (8 March) until I came to the phrase "the burden of childcare".
