Golf master Arnold Palmer can now add "hotelier" to his impressive resume.

Palmer is partnering with Concord Hospitality Enterprises to build a 109-key SpringHill Suites by Marriott hotel near his Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania. The hotel will be jointly owned by Palmer Hospitality LP, Concord and Keith H. McGraw, is slated to open late next year.

What can guests expect? A lot of green. Palmer's golfing career will be the inspiration for the hotel's design, which will feature everything from his awards to golf memorabilia. The hotel will be a LEED-certified prototype that was pioneered by Concord in conjunction with Marriott.

The all-suite concept will offer separate areas for sleeping, working and relaxing, and will feature complimentary daily breakfast buffet, in-suite microwave and mini-fridge, pull-out sofa bed, free high-speed Internet access, swimming pool and whirlpool, fitness room and on-site business services.

We're pretty sure the SpringHill Suites will offer shuttle service to the golf course, too.

One of my favorite drinks is an Arnold Palmer. I've gotten a lot of grief from friends asking if I'm 70. My mom once looked at me with disdain asking if it wasn't a little too early at lunch to be drinking during the week! Once I explained what it was she felt better her son wasn't a lush.

Anyway after a recent Cubs game, I grabbed a drink with some friends at Casey

Moran's. I'm not one for gimmicky liquors and stick to what I like. You're shocked I know. Well I saw a promo on the bar TV about Seagram's Sweet Tea Vodka. It got me thinking would this be a good drink for a summer BBQ???

This past weekend I hit up Binny's and found a bottle for about $16. When I got home, not in the car of course, I tasted it to see if it was better than the Bakon vodka I was once coerced to taste. The tea taste and vodka flavors definitely come through.

At this past weekend's BBQ, I grabbed some lemonade on the way over to my buddy's. Tall glass, ice, sweet tea vodka, and lemonade - drink! It was really good. I was expecting to feel like a High School kid drinking some garbage concoction my friends made to get me drunk - I went to an all boys HS where no meant wuss! Regardless, the vodka is perfect for a hot summer day drink.

There are a lot more drinks on their website and for some reason their calling my drink a Palmetto. Perhaps I need to speak to someone in their marketing group on how to get a certain celebrity endorsement!

In the midst of midterm election season and economic policy-making, the leaders of the golf industry have seized this moment as the time to designate their place in the ever-changing world of politics.

Led the by the non-profit National Golf Foundation, the 2010 American Golf Census is designed to accurately account for the number and ability level of golfers in the United States, along with various other fun-facts about the game.

That information will then be recorded, posted and relayed to the newly founded golf lobby “We Are Golf” who, armed with the new knowledge, will go to work badgering our elected officials on Capitol Hill for more of the niceties that the federal government has to offer (i.e. money).

Admittedly, at first glance this appears a pretty trivial, hopeless, and painfully boring way of accomplishing something that probably won’t work, but recent numbers churned out by the census and it’s counterparts actually bring to light some surprisingly interesting information.

For example, in the last wide scale survey, “We Are Golf” reported that in 2005 the golf industry took in $75.9 billion, more money than the motion picture and video industry.

The golf industry also creates (indirectly and directly), almost double the amount of jobs that the telecommunications industry does and more careers than the broadcasting, motion picture, and publishing industries combined. In 2006, Florida attributed over 160,000 of its jobs directly due to the popularity of golf in the state, a figure that continues to grow annually.

It really is amazing to see how this silly game we all love to hate acts as the vehicle towards prosperity for so many people and communities all around the nation.

Take the example of a little golf course in a small town in New York; Lenox Hills Country Club was the course and Farmingdale was the town. Lenox Hills was a failing country club until the local park authority purchased the plot of land in 1930. Two different architects were hired to construct four new golf courses.

That municipal course grew in stature and was so popular that residents demanded another course to be built, and so, in 1958 it was.

Today over 300,000 rounds of golf are played on those municipal courses every year.

One of it’s courses even draws golfers (myself included) from all around the world, all of whom are forced to wait in line in the cold, dark hours of the morning just in hopes of getting tee time. The name of that course? Bethpage Black, host of the 2002 and 2009 United States Open Championships.

Stories similar to that of Bethpage are not uncommon because golf has a history of canonizing players who give back to the game and their community. While icons in other sports are worshipped for their ability to buy expensive cars and negotiate large contracts, the game that demands character holds its players to a higher standard. Tiger Woods has his foundation, as does Phil Mickelson, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els.

Bobby Jones, who some argue is golf’s best ever player, remained an amateur his entire career and thus never accepted a dime of his winnings. Arnold Palmer was in 2004 bestowed the Presidential Medal of freedom, and every year Golf’s Professional tours contribute $130 million dollars to charity around the globe.

Golf is more than just a game. It demands character from its players and in return offers not just a fun few hours, but lessons about life and a strong center that countless communities have been built around.

So, as cheesy as it may sound, in taking three minutes to fill out your American Golf Census form, you are not just declaring support for your favorite hobby, but you are registering a belief that sometimes life’s most complicated questions, like unemployment and recession, can be aided by something as simple as trying to hit a ball in a hole.

Having the opportunity to play shortly after this year's Memorial Tournament was a spiritual sojourn for the author. Here is his sixth article in the series including his thoughts on how vital Scioto CC is to what we now know as the modern game of golf and our fascination with its legacy.

 

Twelve different British golfers won the first 16 United States Opens.

 

By the time Scioto Country Club hosted the U. S. Open in 1926 only 15 years had passed since John McDermott became the first American born golfer to win the prestigious title.

 

Then McDermott defended the title in 1912.

 

The very next year Francis Ouimet did the unthinkable at Brookline CC not only beating the British for a third year in a row but doing so as an amateur.

 

Another lifetime amateur American golfer named Bobby Jones would win that 1926 U.S. Open at Scioto CC in the middle of the Roaring Twenties.

 

It was surely a growth period for American golf much more so than what we experienced in the 1980s and 1990s with the boom in golf course construction.

 

This was the era of seeing golf for the very first time and wanting to learn how to play it.

 

At the 1922 U.S. Open spectator tickets were sold for the first time at Skokie Country Club just outside Chicago.

 

By 1924 the U.S.G.A. was forced to introduce sectional qualifying since there were more golfers that wanted to compete for the title of our Nation's Champion.

 

Bobby Jones started his seven year conquest of majors with a victory in the 1923 U.S. Open at InwoodCC just outside Manhattan on Long Island.

 

His amazing streak of winning 13 of 20 majors that he entered ended with his retirement from golf after his win in the U.S. Amateur at Marion—the final leg of his 1930 Grand Slam.

 

In fact that British dominance in the U.S. Open would transition to an absolute amateur authority.

 

Jones himself would win four of eight by the time he was done playing golf.

 

Beginning with Ouimet in 1913 andending with Johnny Goodman in 1933 amateurs would win eight of 19 National Opens.

 

In the city named for the man who discovered our country Jones would win and go on to do something in 1926 no other golfer had even done.

 

He would bridge the large pond and win both the U.S. and British Opens in the same year.

 

Perhaps it was a foreshadowing of the ultimate that happened in 1930 when he possessed the amateur and professional titles on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

 

In any account, Jones had a dramatic impact on the game of golf though potentially his biggest impact came though a man named Jack Nicklaus.

 

The link between Nicklaus and Jones began at the Scioto CC in that U.S. Open in 1926.

 

The man who would take the golf baton from Arnold Palmer and pass it on to Tiger Woods was not even born in 1926.

 

His father Charlie though was there at Scioto. At age 13 he watched as the 24-year-old Jones won his second of four U.S. Opens.

 

After graduating from The Ohio State University with a pharmacology degree, the man who would later become Papa Bear though the golfing exploits of his son, bought and managed several pharmacies.

 

That success led to a family membership at Scioto CC where less than two decades before he was inspired to play golf on the very same grounds by the greatest amateur the game of golf has ever known.

 

Son Jack took up golf when he turned 10 years old and shot a score of 51 at Scioto CC for the first nine holes he ever played.

 

In those formative years he not only heard stories about the great Bobby Jones from his father but as well from other members with firsthand knowledge of Jones' triumph on their golf course.

 

The inspiration of Bobby Jones was not only responsible for getting Jack started in the game of golf but for what drove him to succeed for the next 60-some years until he retired in 2005 at the Open at St. Andrews.

 

Nicklaus will likely go down as the all-time greatest player in the game of golf with 73 PGA Tour victories including 18 major championships.

 

Even Tiger Woods acknowledged the greatness of Nicklaus when he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the PGA TOUR in 2008, saying "No one I can think of is more deserving."

 

"Your impact on golf has been incredible to say the least," he continues, "and I count myself among the millions of fans who consider you to be the greatest of all time. Your record of 118 (worldwide) tournament victories (including 73 sanctioned by the PGA TOUR) and 18 major championships alone is reason enough to receive this honor. However equally important are your commitment to philanthropy, your skill as a course designer and your steadfast dedication to family. These values insure your contribution to golf will forever be unmatched and make you the man whose path we all seek to emulate. Thank you for being such a tremendous mentor to me and so many others. Congratulations Jack."

 

From Jones to Nicklaus to Woods and back to Nicklaus, the light will continue to shine on Jack all because of that bridge formed at Scioto CC nearly a century ago.

 

Famed golf course architect Donald Ross' prized design gem has a legacy all of its own as a world class golf course.

 

After the Jones' Open came the 1931 Ryder Cup and then the 1950 PGA Championship won by Chandler Harper.

 

Bruce Fleisher won the U.S. Amateur in 1968 and Dale Douglas the U.S. Senior Open in 1986 on the course named for the nearby river.

 

Jack Nicklaus and Mike Hurdzan restored the course to its original Ross mastery in 2007.

 

False fronts, subtle contours and bunkers partially hidden from view challenged this amateur golfer.

 

Scioto CC is a golf course where you remember every hole and every shot even if you only play it once in your lifetime.

 

The 516-yard par five 8th hole is memorable for both its beauty anddesign. Its island green was one of the very first in America. My birdie on this magnificent hole is forever etched in my mind.

 

Scioto CC is a fun course to play where whether as an amateur playing from 6,500 yards or a pro from 7,000 yards one uses every club in the bag.

 

This round of golf seemingly played with the game's legends on a legendary course ended as my 35-foot birdie putt disappeared into the hole on the green of the par four 446-yard home hole.

 

Astonishingly for this golfer the scorecard numbers for all 18 holes added up to 78.

 

The golf course is in as fine a shape as any and is ready to once again host a major championship.

 

Who knows what bridges will be built if and when that happens again.

 

Maybe lightening does strike twice and golfers in the 22nd century will look back at Sciotoas we do with firsthand admiration and gratitude for the inspiration received.

 

When you play Scioto CC you feel the presence of Bobby Jones.

Following up a major is never a great spot to be for a golf tournament.

The 101st RBC Canadian Open has managed to put together a serviceable field for this week's tournament.

St. George's Golf and Country Club in Etobicoke, Ontario is the stop for the Canadian Open this year. The tournament has been played on this course four times previous, but hasn't hosted it since 1968.

Two top 10 players are in the field.

Paul Casey, currently eighth in the world rankings, and Luke Donald, who is ninth. Retief Goosen, runner up last year and currently ranked 16th, is also playing, as is the 19th ranked player in the world, Sean O'Hair.

The Canadians have their usual two favorites to root for, Mike Weir and Stephen Ames.

The previous list of winners of this event is fairly impressive. Those who have walked away as the champion at the Canadian Open include Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Tiger Woods, and Vijay Singh.

St. George's Golf Course Superintendent Keith Bartlett will have the bentgrass/poa annua greens rolling about 11 on the Stimpmeter and the thick rough at about 4", which should challenge players to keep it in the fairways. The greens are well sloped, which is why the speed will be kept in the 11 range.

Bartlett was asked in his press conference on Tuesday about the conditions of the greens and specifically hole No. 3, which is the most sloped green at St. George's.

"They don't want to turn it into circus golf," he said. "I think we'll be fine... Even No. 3 green is not going to be treated differently. Everything is the same height and will be rolled the same.... And the greens are rolling well. I think the players will be happy."

St. George's is not terribly long by today's standards, at just a shade over 7000 yards, so shorter hitters with accuracy may do well over the weekend; ala Mike Weir.

Last year at Glen Abbey Golf and Country Club, Nathan Green was able to out duel Retief Goosen in a two-hole playoff for the win. The Australian Green, who is ironically from Toronto, Australia, is back to defend his title.

The most popular player at the Tuesday press conference was, without a doubt, native son Mike Weir.

Mike was asked how much pressure is there as a Canadian to win the Canadian Open.

"There's pressure every year," he answered. "But it's exciting."

Weir was also asked about the field this year.

"It's a great field. RBC has done such a great job. We've got better players that show up. I think the date (the week following the British Open) has been overblown. They've made it easy for the players to get here."

Hardly any of the players in the field have much experience on this golf course, including Weir, who said he has only played it once.

After I reviewed the V Spot in Park Slope, all my commenting pals were like, “You got to go to S’nice!” Well pals, I’ve been there like 80 times now! And I’m a big fan. I do love a sandwich. Ohhhh and the banana chocolate chip muffins! S’great. S’wonderful. Let me s’top.

First I was all about the curried cauliflower and chickpea wrap. I don’t love wraps but this one is decent. I love cauliflower! I would marry cauliflower! I would make sweet love to cauliflower right in front of broccoli’s face! But I will have to get my cauliflower from somewhere else because now my thing is the vegan panini. It’s super! It has tofu slices, sun-dried tomatoes and pesto! On ciabatta! Now to be completely honest—I can be honest, can’t I?—the tofu is on the bland side. It’s trying to look like mozzarella but it just tastes like flavorless cooked tofu. But the pesto! Oh, the pesto! And sun-dried tomato! And ciabatta! It’s delicious.

To do a thorough review, I had to try the vegan Philly cheesesteak, as you know I’m the expert. I give it 3 out of 5 Veganstaurs on the cheesesteak scale. It’s not that authentic, though it’s definitely as greasy as a cheesesteak. It comes with fried onions and peppers so they’ve got that right. The bread is not really the same as a Philly cheesesteak, but it’s good nonetheless. The main discrepancy is that the “meat” is chopped kind of thick—wrong, wrong, wrong! However the cheese is gooey and yummy.

Other things of note: there’s like a million vegan cookies but I haven’t tried any of them yet. I prefer my cookies in dough form, you see. Oh, I’ve also tried the breakfast burrito; it’s decent. It’s good for, I don’t know, breakfast. They make an excellent Arnold Palmer! Like, perfect. I hate complaining about lines but the line kind of always takes a while. I can’t tell if it’s just because they are so darn popular or if the service is just slow. It’s not the worst though. All the tables have these signs that say, “no computers at this table between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.,” or something like that. I don’t want to work on my computer there anyway but the signs annoy me. Nobody tells Megan Rascal what to do! You can sit outside, which is nice, but it looks like you have to keep your dog tied up on the other side of the gate: LAME! Though I’m sure if they met the notorious F.I.G., they’d make an exception, considering he’s THE MAN.

I went to the Manhattan location once. It was alright. It was on the crowded side and our waiter was just plain mean. I took my omnivore friend Kevin and, boy, what a baby! He ordered the Cuban sandwich which is like fake ham, pickles and swiss cheese on bread. Fake ham, pickles and cheese. Surprise! It was gross! Alert the media! Protect the children! Crazy omnivores. It’s sad though because now he’ll never go there with me again. Boys are goddamn babies, I swear.

In summary, S’nice is nice for sweets, sandwiches and Arnold Palmers!

There was nothing lucky about Louis Oosthuizen’s victory at the 139th Open Championship.

The guy went out and demolished the field by seven strokes, and the margin would have been even greater had he not played the 17th and 18th holes so conservatively, as anyone would expect from a guy holding an eight stroke lead with two holes to play (Oosthuizen was leading by eight before bogeying the 17th).

Nothing was handed to Oosthuizen at last week’s Open Championship.  He went out and took control of the tournament, and in doing so, put forth the most dominant display of golf seen by anyone other than Tiger Woods in the past two decades.  

But Oosthuizen also gave us a glimpse into the future of golf, and it may be either bright or dark depending upon how you look at it.

For those of you looking for complete parity in the game, the future will be bright.  With the absence of a dominant force, we are at a point where literally any of the 160 players in a major championship field can win.

Case and point, six of the past 10 major champions have been first time winners.

For those of you looking for a dominant force or even a small handful of players that come together to form a dominant force, well, those days might have ended the moment Woods’ SUV struck a fire hydrant outside of his Orlando home last November.

So what is good for the game of golf as we head towards these uncharted waters?    

Well, parity is good in a way.  It makes for some exciting tournaments, like last week’s Open Championship.  When the first tee shot was struck early Thursday morning at St. Andrews, we had absolutely no idea who the last man standing was going to be come Sunday evening, and no one in their right mind thought that it would be a guy by the name of Lodewicus Theodorus Oosthuizen.  

But parity is not good for any sport over an extended period of time; and this is particularly true when it comes to golf.  

For example, does anyone remember Andy North, Hubert Green, Bob Tway, Scott Simpson, Larry Nelson, or Jeff Sluman?

You may have heard the names before, but what do you really remember about these guys?

Well, they all won major championships between 1985 and 1988.

Anyone remember the years between 1995 and 1998?

Not a single player won more than one major championship during that four year stretch.

Talk about parity.  The game of golf has never experienced more parity than it did between the mid-80s and early 90s, yet this era commonly referred to as golf’s Dark Age.

So why is that?

It’s because the popularity of any sport is driven by superstars.

The 60’s are not considered one of golf’s golden ages because Bob Charles won the 1963 Open Championship, or because Gay Brewer won the 1967 Masters or because Don January won the 1967 PGA Championship.

The 60’s are considered one of the game’s greatest eras because Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Billy Casper dominated the major championships.

Would you have rather seen 35 guys win the 40 majors between 1960 and 1970?

Or would you have rather seen Nicklaus, Palmer, Player and Casper win 20 of those 40 majors?

Woods has been arguably the most dominant force the game has ever seen or the past 13 years, and it’s no coincidence that the game has experienced an unprecedented growth in popularity during this same period of time.

For the past decade there have been a lot of people looking for more guys to win major championships.  And now that Woods is clearly struggling with his game and his life in general, those same people seem to be taking joy in Woods’ struggles both on and off the course.

So, now you have your parity.

If Woods continues on his downward spiral, we are going to see Louis Ossthuizens popping up at nearly every major championship.

That may be interesting for a year or two, but one can’t help but think that those same people who have been crying out for parity for the past decade will be turning off their television sets on major championships Sundays in the not so distant future.

Why?

Because that is what always happens during a time of extreme parity in the game of golf.

"Whatever she gave away today, she'll take back tomorrow."

Those are the words of five-time Open champion Tom Watson. Oh, how right he was. On day one the course was forgiving, with virtually no wind creating very playable conditions for golfers. 

"The Old Lady was there for the taking," Watson suggested. "She didn’t have her clothes on today." 

On day two however, playing conditions were drastically changed. With wind gusts recorded at up to 50 miles per hour in the afternoon, golfers were scrambling to make par rather than post low scores like the day previous. Play was even suspended for an hour and five minutes because of the high winds.

"This golf course was tough today and as I said on Thursday, she was naked yesterday but she put on her boxing gloves today and just hit us with all she had," said Watson.

Watson shot +3 on Friday in the harsh conditions to fall to +4 for the tournament, missing the cut in his last Open at the iconic St. Andrew’s Old Course. This came as a major disappointment to me, as Tom Watson is my favourite golfer. I’m not the only the one, as Watson received the loudest crowd ovation today at the Open on the 18th hole. The loudest cheers could have been for Tiger, Phil, or local favourites Montgomery, McIlroy, Westwood, McDowell, and the beloved Sir Nick Faldo. But they weren’t. They were for a 60 year old American, an American for god’s sakes! An American though, that’s sometimes referred to in Scotland as an honourary Scot.

Why is that you may ask?  As they commonly say in Scotland, golf is a gentleman's game. Jack Nickalus was the golden bear, Arnold Palmer; the king. Tom Waston, he’s known as the gentleman. That’s one of the reasons why I like him so much. The respect he’s garnered over the years has been absolutely astounding. He plays the game the way it was meant to be played, like a true gentleman. The same unfortunately can’t be said for club-smashing Tiger whom I have the utmost disrespect for, but that’s a totally different topic all together. Watson is known to be the classiest man in golf and for that he has earned my respect. 

Now, I’m young and didn’t start watching golf until Watson’s best playing days were long behind him. I really only became a fan of him at last year’s Open Championship, where he held the lead going into the last hole but bogeyed and eventually lost the tournament in a playoff. The golf gods were on his side then, letting a man two months shy of 60 compete with players 40 years his junior. If Tom Watson won that tournament, and he sure as hell came close, it would have been the single most amazing feat in golfing history. On Friday though, the golf gods were not on his side. On his approach shot on the 18th hole, Watson landed what was a perfect shot right on the green. A fan screamed "Get in the Hole" like always, except this time it wasn't so crazy. The ball started rolling, and rolling, and people thought ‘Oh my goodness this thing is going in the hole! What an amazing way to finish your open career at St. Andrews!’ They thought that until the ball came to a dead stop, 1 inch from the hole. 1 inch! Watson had to settle for a tap-in birdie. Alas, the golf gods were not on his side this time. 

On that same hole where the almost-an-eagle-but-the-ball-fell-1-inch-short-of-the-hole approach shot happened, something else remarkable happened. Watson, who was likely playing in his last Open Championship at St. Andrews, stopped on the 18th hole while walking on the famous Swilken Bridge for a picture, a farewell, a moment, a memory. He kneeled down, kissed the bridge itself,  removed his cap, lifted his arms, and waved to the fans. It was as if Tom was thanking the fans, while at the same time the fans were thanking Tom. That was the huge crowd ovation I was talking about earlier. With the setting sun in the background, it made for an iconic moment in golf history. A moment that I, along with millions of other golf fans will never forget.

Thank-you for playing golf like a gentleman, playing golf the right way. Thank-you for showing us that it’s sometimes not all about winning on the golf course. Thank-you for exciting us all with your perfect shot on the 18th hole that was oh so close to going in. Thank-you for being my favourite golfer of all time. Thank-you, Tom Watson.

Tom Watson has been very critical of Tiger Woods ever since the scandal with Woods broke late last year.

Despite the hard words from Watson sometimes, Tiger had a nice gesture for the legend from Kansas on Friday at the British Open.

Watson, a five-time winner of the Open, was in the group behind Tiger Woods. As darkness began to settle it became clear that Watson was going to miss the cut.

Suddenly we realized that this was more than likely Watson's last round at St. Andrews.

Although Tom figures to play in a few more Opens, he probably will not still be playing the next time the Old Course hosts another Open.

Because of the wind delay earlier in the day, darkness was falling quickly, and it appeared as though Tom would have to come out to play the final hole on Saturday morning. You can bet Watson didn't want to do this-and you know the crowd didn't want it.

They had been cheering Tom over the last few holes, realizing too that this was more than likely his swan song at St. Andrews.

With the light disappearing fast, Woods motioned for Tom and his group to swing away, assuring that they would finish the round on Friday and not have to come back Saturday morning.

The crowd loved it. Watson hit his drive and then stopped at the famous Swilcan Bridge on number 18. The same bridge Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus stopped on during their last round at St. Andrews for a brief tribute.

Watson bent down and gave the bridge a kiss. It was a brilliant moment in time.

Tom then proceeded to hit a wedge and nearly holed it out for a eagle. The ball came to rest literally a half inch from the hole. Tom tapped it in for a birdie.

Say what you want about Tiger Woods. This was a moment for the history of golf, and Tiger knows his history. He knew the right thing to do.

One o'clock and Jerry Kelly stepped on to 17th tee of the Old Course, wet, cold and wildly content – a state of mind that did not change as he drove three balls into the gardens of the Old Course Hotel. "This isn't helping me prepare for tomorrow one little bit,'' said the PGA pro from Wisconsin, setting his jaw into the elements. "But who can resist the chance to play this magical place?"

The magic will resume tomorrow at 6.30am at St Andrews when Paul Lawrie of Scotland will hit the first tee shot of the 2010 Open Championship, and it will continue until the last man out, Simon Edwards of Wales, holes his final putt. In between times, the great and good, the history-makers, the dreamers and the no-hopers, will test themselves against the most elemental challenge the sport has to offer.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and 150 others have travelled to Scotland with hope in their hearts and, lucky for them, waterproofs in their golf bag. Today's conditions saw the cancellation of the Open Champions' Challenge, which features 26 past champions playing a four-hole charity match. Tomorrow's forecast is for heavy rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. Who knows what the weekend will bring, but know this: Sunday's climax will not disappoint.

The Old Course never disappoints, just as it never produces a champion unworthy of the name. Five years ago, Woods was at his very best in beating the field by six shots. He did the same five years before that, in 2000, beating the rest by eight.

The world No1 was a golfer not a freak show back then, just a welcome addition to a list of Open winners at St Andrews that includes Nicklaus, Palmer, Ballesteros and Faldo from the post-war period, and Bobby Jones, James Braid and JH Taylor in the decades before that. Only the greats need apply at the Home of Golf.

Yet for the game's stars who have written their name into the history of this place, none of them has ever overshadowed the Old Course itself.

This is where golf began, where its popularity grew and where its legacy will continue. "I think they will probably do some things to the course down the years, 50 years or so from now. But what will they do to make it truly different?" said Arnold Palmer before answering his own question. "Not a hell of a lot. They'll lengthen some tees, they'll make the greens a little faster and they'll do something to make the fairways a little more magnificent. But it will still be St Andrews."

Few would argue with that, even if some of the purists would take issue with sanguinity shown by establishment figures towards the effect technology has had on places like Augusta National and the Old Course. Does it matter that this year's Open will be held on five different golf "properties", or that the R&A; was shamed into changing the boundary of the course two days before the start of the championship? Apparently not. "You might think it's embarrassing, but I can cope with it,'' said the R&A;'s chief executive, Peter Dawson.

The sadness provoked by the failings of those who are supposed to run the sport is far outweighed by the awe inspired by those who play it.

After an era of relative parity through the late 1980s and the first half of the 90s, and an era of one-man domination, the sport lies on the cusp of something new, something different, something fresh.

Woods may one day emerge from his purgatory and he may do so with a victory this weekend, but to predict such an outcome would require a leap of faith in the man himself and in his new Nike putter.

It would also a require a sudden loss of nerve by rivals who sense the biggest beast of the golfing jungle may not be, and may never be again, the player he was. Where once they genuflected in the presence of the great man, the likes of Mickelson, Harrington and even Els, look at Woods and see mostly his vulnerabilities.

The same goes for a younger generation of players, only more so. The era of American domination is over, declared Ian Poulter this week, and he found a seconder for that motion in Nick Faldo, the last Englishman to win an Open. "It's probable,'' he said when asked to judge the prospects of an English victory.

The problem lies in identifying which Englishman might be up to the job. Poulter, of course, will fancy his own chances, and so will Paul Casey and Lee Westwood, two players who have taken residence inside the world's top 10. Yet for all that they have excelled over a long period, there is one Englishman whose stunning form in recent times – two victories in three PGA tour events – makes his claim on a historic victory impossible to resist. His name is Justin Rose.

The British Open might not be what it is today without Arnold Palmer. The U.S. turned into a golfing power after World War II, yet few Americans bothered to play golf's oldest championship.

Los principales golfistas de la actualidad y de los últimos años recordaron con cariño al español Severiano Ballesteros y lamentaron su ausencia antes de que comience mañana el Abierto Británico, tercer 'Grand Slam 'de la temporada, al estar recuperándose del cáncer cerebral que sufrió en 2008.

El cántabro, triple campeón en suelo escocés y uno de los principales valedores del resurgimiento del golf europeo, será una de las principales bajas en el club de Saint Andrews, aunque deseó "el mejor de los éxitos" desde su residencia en España durante la Cena de Campeones que se celebra anualmente antes del comienzo del 'Major'.

"Me comentó que le gustaría poder estar aquí. Que le agradaría tener la energía para viajar. Además, nos deseó la mejor de todas las suertes. La verdad es que es muy triste ver todo lo que le ha sucedido", dijo el estadounidense Tom Watson, que ha estado durante años compitiendo por los títulos junto al golfista cántabro.

Asimismo, el californiano Phil Mickelson, actual número 2 del mundo, recordó el momento memorable del español cuando se proclamó vencedor en el Open Británico en la edición de 1984, en el momento en el que celebró con entusiasmo su definitivo 'putt' en el hoyo 18.

Por último, el también estadounidense Arnold Palmer, uno de los mejores jugadores de la historia de este deporte, también lamentó la ausencia del de Pedreña. "Seve tenía una gran actitud. ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Arnold Palmer gazed out the window from Russacks Hotel on Wednesday morning and felt the clock turn back a half century.

Great idea, the Open Champions' Challenge. The weather today, not so good. Whatever else Scotland does well the old country does nothing more impressively than its unpredictable weather systems. This one was a real doozy, as our American cousins say, pelting rain hurling in off a wild sea, the wind whipping everything and everyone daft enough to venture outside. "Real golfing weather," grinned the smug anoraks. "Give us a break," squealed the drenched rest of us.

This latter group included most, if not all, of the 26 former champions gathered in St Andrews and scheduled to play four holes to celebrate the championship's 150th anniversary. Fifty years ago, Arnold Palmer flung open his curtains in his room at Rusacks Hotel beside the 18th fairway and looked out on a dreary day of rain. Today he had someone else open the curtains but from the same hotel the old champ, now 81, grimaced at much the same sort of dull scene.

"I had the urge to play despite the weather," he said shortly after the Challenge had been cancelled by an apologetic R&A.; "I always have the urge. Someone asked me this morning how I was hitting it and I told them: 'I am hitting it so hard I can hear it land.'"

That 1960 Open was Palmer's first. He ended up second to Kel Nagle, who finished with two birdies to win by a shot, but he was hooked and his enthusiasm for the Open was to revive a competition that had declined in stature and relevance as the years rolled by and the Americans stayed at home. Post-Palmer, they came in their droves and everything changed.

"I look out here at you guys and I think back to the reporters who were here 50 years ago. Hell, I could count them on the fingers of my own hands and I knew them all by name.

"To see how this thing has grown over those 50 years is fantastic. When I arrived here the first thing I saw was a line of 14 mowers cutting the 18th fairway. In '60 they had three mowers and they cut the entire course with them.

"Plus there wasn't a green blade of grass to be seen. Now look at it. I thought I was at Augusta not St Andrews when I saw all that green out there. It used to be brown but now it looks beautiful and the conditioning is superb."

The chance to see this posse of ex-champions, men like Palmer and Roberto de Vicenzo of Argentina was compelling for the many thousands who pay some small attention to the old game. De Vicenzo won his Open at Hoylake in 1967 and then missed out on a Masters play-off the following spring when he signed for the incorrect score, was disqualified and summed it all up by saying "what a stupid I am".

Severiano Ballesteros, of course, was slated to attend until his cancer stepped between him and a public that would have swept him up in their emotion and carried him somewhere better than the dark places he has inhabited since collapsing at Madrid airport. He recorded a message via the BBC that would have been broadcast at the end of the Challenge and that would have resonated long into the night.

The R & A announced later that they had donated the event's £50,000 prize fund to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation which channels funds into medical research.

All this was lost todayby an unrelenting band of low pressure that gripped Fife tight and refused to let go. Peter Thomson, five times an Open winner but now struggling physically, put his name down to play. He was not going to swing a club but he was going to skipper one of the groups from his wheelchair. Yes, it was really was going to be one of those days.

Sir Nick Faldo told us how disappointed he was that the day had been scrapped. "The last time they staged this [in 2000] I played with Sam Snead so that was special. At one point today I suggested we just play two holes, not four – the first and 18th – but it was too brutal out there even for that. Pity."
