As most nationals do, I love my native soil. I won't pretend the United States of America is the best country in the world just because I call it home, but it's gotta be up there. Whenever I travel internationally and no matter how incredible the trip has been, it's always a relief to get home and see the Stars and Bars.

She is by no means perfect, but the ol' gal offers a quality of life unrivaled in many (most?) other countries.

Likewise, as gory as our social progression has been, it's still one of the leaders. All the more so when you consider the uniquely gargantuan and heterogeneous population with which the 50 States must deal.

But, again, she has her warts and one of the ugliest is on display as I sit here—our infatuation with the salacious and tawdry at the expense of the real.

The 2010 Laureus World Sports Awards have been building all week to their crescendo on Wednesday night. Laureus and its guests will celebrate some of the best athletes in the world in an effort to harness the infinite influence of sport toward a more substantive humanitarian end.

It's been an incredible thing to observe—the assortment of athletic glitterati and the sincerity with which it pursues the common objective is enough to make even the most hardened cynic an optimist.

Of course, the biggest American media presences are missing the party and it's not the first time. In fact, it's the 10th time in 10 chances.

Instead, the Red, White, and Blue blogosphere (and I imagine print) is infested with stories about Ben Roethlisberger's latest scandal , the hubbub surrounding Michael Vick's latest award , and I'm sure you wouldn't have to look too hard to get a whisper of Tiger Woods.

Now, I'm walking a thin line here because I can't pretend I'd be focused on Laureus if I weren't sent to Abu Dhabi to cover it and I clearly clicked on the linked articles from the United Arab Emirates, i.e. half a world away, I'm still interested.

Furthermore, you can be damn sure I'll have something to say about a scandal du jour down the line. Like, perhaps, Antonio Cromartie's SEVEN children in five States (as of July 2009).

In some sense, I'm throwing rocks in a glass house.

That's fine—whether my house survives isn't important.

What is important—critical even—is hijacking a greater share of the spotlight for Laureus and its mission. A task that shouldn't be as hard as it's proven to be.

That's because a closer look reveals the Former Colonies' presence in the actual festivities is enormous.

The Los Angeles Lakers, New York Yankees, Sanya Richards, Lindsey Vonn, Serena Williams, Chris Cole (skateboarding), Greg Long (surfing), Lance Armstrong, Tom Watson, and Brett Favre are all nominated in various categories.

Edwin Moses is the Chairman of the Laureus Academy.

Other American members include Marcus Allen, Nadia Comaneci (dual citizenship), Marvin Hagler, Tony Hawk (more on him in another article), Michael Johnson, Dan Marino, John McEnroe, Robby Naish, Martina Navratilova, Jack Nicklaus, Monica Seles, Bill Shoemaker (deceased), and Mark Spitz.

The good doctor, Julius Erving, will be in attendance and Dikembe Mutombo (we can share him with the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is already here. Incidentally, my days of whining about coach are over—I ate breakfast with him and Mt. Mutombo indeed; dude would be cramped in a stretch limo.

If Hollywood is your thing, the awards will be hosted by Kevin Spacey. Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Rodriguez, and Kyle MacLachlan will be in the audience (as will Hugh Grant and Clive Owen, but they ain't Yanks).

Phew.

As you can see, there's a lot of star wattage listed above so the footholds are there. The question remains: Where are the feet?

Where is ESPN? Where is FOX Sports? Where is AOL or Yahoo! or Sports Illustrated ? In other words, where are the big U.S. guns?

I put the question (in more eloquent terms, I assure you) to the Director of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Ned Wills.

Lucky for us, turns out the absence of Laureus in the American consciousness isn't totally our fault. Our share ends at "mostly."

According to Wills, an impressive and amicable man who has come to the light from the Dark Side of Big Oil (just kidding, Uncle Charlie) and banking (not kidding in the slightest), the organization's focus has been narrower in its first phase.

During the 10 years that have elapsed since Laureus' inception, the primary goal has been putting the funds to work at the grass roots level. Instead of investing the considerable dirham necessary to formulate a promotional presence in the U.S., Laureus has concentrated on designing and enabling a dizzying array of projects on six of the seven continents.

Judging from Wills' ambition and enthusiasm for his job, if there are kids in Antarctica, Laureus will get there, too. Just give it time.

I'm not exaggerating when I say "dizzying"—if reduced to hard copy, the list of almost 80 efforts with one- or two-sentence blurbs consumes six pages. Single-spaced.

The list includes programs using a Red Rover-type game with tennis balls to teach African children about the dangers of H.I.V., employing soccer to educate youngsters in Cambodia and Iraq about the omnipresent peril of landmines, and each one is implemented almost entirely by the locals.

That last point is particularly ingenious—as Wills put it, involving the local community provides the most enduring change and gives the Foundation invaluable information from those most familiar with the horrors.

With so many irons in the fire, Wills and Laureus had little money and time to spare on a recalcitrant and flooded market like the American sports landscape.

That will change if all goes according to plan. Soon.

As Laureus enters its second decade of existence, the foundation has been laid and it's as solid a launching pad as you'll find. Despite the fact that it has, heretofore, flourished without much ogling from the United States, Wills acknowledges the American market is too powerful to ignore.

And that means the Redcoats are coming again—Wills is English and Laureus is based in London—except they'll have international support.

Hopefully, we'll embrace them this time around.

Because too much is at stake and too much has already been done without us.

Besides, it's one hell of a scene...

GB: My favorite gown of the evening was Zoe Saldana's totally unusual Givenchy. I love the separate tones of the skirt and top and thought it's whimsical ruffles and romantic colors suitably recalled her role in Avatar. Other favorites were boho-chic Nicole Ritchie in sleek Reem Accra, and the burst of magenta in Vera's Marchesa. While not crazy about it at first, Diane Kruger's feminine Chanel grew on me throughout the evening - proving once again she's at the top of my best-dressed list.

We can’t all score an invite to a star-studded Oscar after-party, but luckily, Oprah Winfrey can hook us up. On Monday, she aired her sixth annual After-Oscars Party episode from the Kodak Theater -- site of the previous night's ceremony. What did the four acting-award winners reveal when they sat down to bask in the Oprah love?

First the hoarse daytime queen (who'd clearly been out at some actual after-parties) gushed, “It’s so extraordinary that this incredible thing happened to them less than twelve hours ago, and now they’re here....with us!”

Running on just two hours of sleep, Best Actress Sandra Bullock still had a sense of humor when Winfrey asked if she expected the award. "Look at my career up to this moment," she said. "Nothing in my career has said, 'She's going to win an Oscar one day.'"

Mo'Nique addressed why she didn't campaign for her award like other Hollywood insiders do. "Everybody kept saying, 'She won’t promote the movie,'" she explained. "I said, 'Well, do you know about this little show called Oprah Winfrey?' Because I’d done the show twice....It was just that not only am I a late-night talk show host, not only am I an actress, not only am I a stand-up comedian, I’m also a mother, I’m also a wife. So, it’s like 'Guys, we gotta make this make sense.'"

Newly minted Best Actor Jeff Bridges relayed the unique and valuable career advice he’d heard from Francis Ford Coppola: “The most important thing for an actor is to get married.” Bridges went on to elaborate: “All the stuff in the movies and plays, they’re all about love. It gets you involved with what life’s all about.” Bridges also divulged that “from here, I'm going to a play with the Coen Brothers, and then we will fly to Santa Fe and start our movie True Grit” (a remake of the classic John Wayne western, with Bridges in Wayne's role).

After chatting with Best Supporting Actor Christoph Waltz, Winfrey invited Precious' Fletcher on stage. The Best Adapted Screenplay winner had been too stunned to speak at the Oscars podium. “I know there was a particular person that you wanted to thank....” she said. “You get a do-over.” The grateful screenwriter then thanked Sapphire, author of Push (which the film was based on), as well as the cast and crew, and Winfrey (a producer on the Oscar-nominated drama).

Winfrey enlisted pal Nate Berkus to interview celebs behind the scenes (Cameron Diaz offered this beauty hint: “If you don’t want anyone to look at the rest of your face, wear bright red lipstick”). When Rachel McAdams admitted her dress was cumbersome, Berkus unwittingly made her point by getting his mic tangled up it. It was actually a cute moment (aside from home-design tips, being cute is Berkus' specialty!).

Style guru Carson Kressley dropped by to count down his top five gowns, and he named:

5. Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab Couture. (“Very, very pretty.”)

4. Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka. (“She’s never looked better....It was very flattering for her shape.”)

3. Vera Farmiga in Marchesa. (“A controversial dress because it was so over the top....You either love it or you hate, and I loved it.”)

2. Jennifer Lopez in Armani Privé. (“This was my 'Wow' dress, the oh-my-gosh stunner....She knows how to rock it, Jenny from the Block.”)

1. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa. (I just thought that she looked like she came to get her Oscar....Her stylist knew she was gonna win.”)

The Oscars are the most anticipated night in Hollywood and they're over in just one evening. Thanks, Oprah, for keeping the day-after momentum alive!

The 82nd Academy Awards wrapped up the awards season Sunday night and fashion-wise the one word that best describes the night's looks is: "Wow!" From Sandra Bullock to Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz, the Oscar ladies definitely were the most glamorous in years.

"The long gowns were fantastic -- the metallic and the shine," Allen B. Schwartz, the design director for ABS, tells ET. "It was incredibly great gowns, elegance and a real throwback to '40s glamour. I think we always hope for '40s Hollywood glamour, but last night you got it."

Diva presenters, bad dance, graceless hosts. Marina Hyde looks back at a starry night

Ladies, gentlemen, and non-members of the academy: welcome to G2's almost-live coverage of the heartbreakingly succinct Oscars telecast, which – despite the fact that no one would dream of doing anything as transgressive as swearing – is being brought to you with a 24-hour time delay.

Right off the bat I want to join the salutes for The Hurt Locker – a movie just too damn important to bother with stuff like narrative, and which will one day be deemed just as hilariously underrated as American Beauty (which, you might dimly recall, won a mere five Oscars) and Dances With Wolves (a paltry haul of seven, including a best director statuette for Mister Kevin Costner). As for James Cameron's hopes for Avatar, his groundbreaking, record-breaking movie . . . well, they are with Eywa now.

This was indeed a night that made history – David Letterman is now no longer the worst-ever Oscars host. Co-presenters Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin proved they couldn't hit a gag with a trunkload of IEDs, falling back three times on comedy misreadings of the autocue, to ever-diminishing returns. They weren't even phoning it; they were texting it in, deferring even the comedy opening number to Doogie Howser MD. As is too often the case with this marquee event, it was a night that lived down to expectations. The Oscars telecast is like one of those movies where you just know that at some point, someone is going to slide down the back of a door with their head in their hands. That someone will be you – but we'll come to the soi disant "Legion of Extraordinary Dancers" later. For now, it's time to sling out some more gongs.

Best drinking game

The one where you do a shot every time someone mentions Meryl (surname very much de trop, obviously). Ever since the heyday of the studio era, an adorably defensive Hollywood has wanted you to know that it doesn't just have sex symbols who can turn in a role. It has actors – men and women who deliver something so much more epic than mere performance. These days, the mantle once worn by the likes of Norma Shearer and Greer Garson is all Meryl's, and failure to either nominate her or mention her less than three times in any given Oscars ceremony would trigger an industry-wide existential crisis. This year's second-best drinking game? The one where you take a gulp every time a member of the motion-picture community salutes the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. It really puts stuff into perspective.

Most tediously predictable seating arrangement

Placing James Cameron directly behind Kathryn Bigelow. Hey, did you hear that those guys were married once? Even if you did, I'll bet you haven't listened to nearly enough yakking about the subject yet.

Best acceptance speech

This year produced that rarest of occurences, both a best actor and a best actress whom you'd love to have a drink with. For all Jeff Bridge's immense charm though, Sandra takes the speech honours. Wherever you stand on America's Sorta Sweetheart, she played it just the way you should: surprised, sweet, sisterly, self-deprecating, and with the brief threat of tears, but not so you feared she'd be overwhelmed by them. A class act. Plus, she gets triple points for the joke about Meryl being "a great kisser".

Best They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To moment

Footage of Lauren Bacall accepting an honorary Oscar at a gala a few months ago. "A man at last," drawled Bacall of her statuette. "The thought that when I get home I'm going to have a two-legged man in my room is so exciting I can hardly stand it." At the Oscars, this was immediately followed by a cutaway to Cameron Diaz chewing gum. Truly, it was the stars that got small.

Best diva moment

Best director presenter Barbra Streisand walking almost to the front of the stage, then waiting imperiously for a lackey to rush out of the wings and help her down three steps to the microphone. Long may she fib about the farewell aspect of her tours.

Worst cutaway

A tough category, now that reaction shots appear to be subject to the most heavyhanded ethnic profiling. Ethan Coen was the night's go-to Jew, the guy they cut to right after Steve Martin made the joke about Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz playing a Nazi "obsessed with finding Jews", and observed that the contents of the Kodak Theatre were pretty much "the motherlode". Don't worry, viewers – see, Ethan's laughing! The Jews totally get the joke! The sledgehammer cutaway was also deployed each time an African-American star was mentioned. The fact that you could practically hear a producer screaming, "Close-up on Morgan Freeman! Or one of the other four, goddammit!", really added to the sense of how far we have come.

Most never-ending segment

If you had spent the last few weeks wondering what the score from The Hurt Locker would look like interpreted via the medium of modern dance, this was the night for you. In what felt like a 47-minute medley, each and every nominee for best score was . . . glossed, would you call it? . . . by a troupe called the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, who really know how to distil the tension of bomb disposal into a soft-shoe number. This year's ceremony was produced by one of the judges on So You Think You Can Dance, which goes some way toward explaining that excruciating segment, but nowhere near excusing it.

Best reminder of what Hollywood dreams are made of

Oprah Winfrey's tribute to Gabourey Sidibe. "She was a student trying to earn some money to go to college. On Monday she skipped school to audition for a movie called Precious. On Tuesday they called her back to meet the director . . . On Wednesday, she got the part. And tonight, she is sitting at the Academy Awards in the same category as Meryl Streep." Ain't that the movies? Nicely done, Oprah.

Best fauxhemian

Sean Penn. Even though Sean knows that real outsiders simply wouldn't show for the Oscars, he agreed to present best actress, and used the occasion of someone else's big moment to announce, "I never became an official member of the academy", before taking an incoherent swipe at them for failing to acknowledge his ex-wife. I know! You can almost smell him mocking the institution. Still, while Sean is only a country member of the academy, fans of Team America will recall that he is a leading light of FAG, the Film Actors' Guild – a powerful lobby coincidentally led by Oscars co-host Arec Bardwin.

Most awkward staging

As a tribute to the various 12-step programmes with which so many attendees are familiar, the best actor and best actress nominees are now bigged up in a segment that resembles an AA sponsors' meeting. Julianne Moore eulogised Colin Firth, making it clear they had "only worked together for three days", while Colin Farrell recommended Jeremy Renner with a reminiscence about "that trip to Mexico, which I wish I could remember more of", while saying "man" and "brother" a lot.

Worst sound design

The Oscars ceremony. I fell asleep in that desperately called-for discourse on the difference between sound editing and sound mixing, so I might have missed the explanation as to why, in the year 2010, the Oscars telecast sounds as if it was engineered by a competition winner. Is it really beyond the wit of early 21st-century TV professionals to raise the level on the auditorium announcer's mic to "discernible"?

Best lecture

Courtesy of best supporting actress Mo'nique, who thanked her husband for advising her that "sometime you have to forego doing what's popular to do what's right". Blithely undermining her fellow nominees, the Precious star praised the academy for rewarding "the performance not the politics", apparently under the impression that Oprah's campaign juggernaut for the movie is about as far away from power-player politicking as you can get.

Worst definition of horror

No-time Academy Award-winners Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart introduced a tribute to the horror movie genre, which took some bizarre detours. Movies you never realised were horror flicks include Marathon Man, Edward Scissorhands, Little Shop of Horrors, Jaws, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Beetlejuice and, um, Twilight, which was really flattered by being interspliced with The Shining. Do adjust your records accordingly.

Most self-regardingly graceless hosts

The academy, which banned The Hurt Locker's producer Nicolas Chartier for sending the most innocuous email to a circle of acquaintance, in which he asked them to vote for The Hurt Locker "and not a $500m film". This is apparently an "ethical lapse" in breach of the academy's negative-campaigning rule, so the man who financed and produced the movie wasn't there to see it have a night he could only have dreamed of. Yet Zac Efron is given pride of place up front near Meryl. Where's the justice?

Worst fact-checking

Demi Moore introduced the "in memoriam" section to people we've lost, in a montage that failed to include her pre-2003 bodywork. Rather more glaring, however, was the omission of Farrah Fawcett, whose failure to make the cut an academy spokesman would have you believe was totally intentional. "Major fail" is Roger Ebert's view on the matter.

Most arresting emergence from the Where Are They Now files . . .

Is Judd Nelson – how to put this? – going through some stuff? The Internet Movie Database indicates the Breakfast Club star will feature in six TV movies or straight-to- DVD releases this year, but his appearance during the John Hughes tribute was certainly eye-catching, and all information as to where Bender's currently "at" would be gratefully received.

Finally, best technical innovation

Sky +. Because of your vision, Sky +, and that of the trailblazing TiVo that went before you, I will never know what Sky pundits Ronni Ancona and Mark Dolan made of it all. I absolutely could not have done it without you.

If you were like me, last night you were watching the show with plenty of questions. Why so long? Why so bad? Who is that weird red-haired lady crashing the stage? Well, we found some answers and even more questions.

Mystery: Who the hell was that red-haired lady crashing the stage during the Best Documentary Short acceptance speech?
What Happened: Some crazy lady in a purple dress pulled a Kanye and hopped up to the mic and just started talking over director-producer Roger Ross Williams. She made no sense at all.
Status: Solved. That woman was producer Elinor Burkett. She and Williams had a bitter feud over the direction of the film that resulted in a lawsuit. Salon has the full, awesome story. She accuses Williams' mother of tripping her with a cane to keep her from getting on stage. The Oscars needed a lot more of this.

Mystery: What was up with George Clooney's face?
What Happened: The silver fox was acting squirrelier than usual and making strange grimaces at the camera.
Status: Solved: As we told you earlier Clooney was drunk from his secret flask. Who knows if the faces were because he was pissed (drunk) or pissed (upset) but we venture it was a combo of the two.

Mystery: Did the Academy leave Farrah Fawcett and others out of the Dead People Montage?
What Happened: The video collection of dead people highlights seemed shorter than usual this year (if you don't count the entirely separate shout out to John Hughes who was never once nominated for an Oscar in his life) but they left several people out, like Fawcett, Bea Arthur, and Ed McMahon.
Status: Solved. Yes, it was intentional. The Academy felt that in all three instances their work didn't qualify them for inclusion, even though Michael Jackson and Brittany Murphy made the grade. They are not apologizing for skipping them either, saying every year some people must be left out. We smell Betty White's hand in this.

Mystery: Did Sandra Bullock diss Meryl Streep?
What Happened: When she got up to accept her trophy, Sandy B made a move toward Meryl, who tried to hug her or something, and then Sandy walked away and Meryl made the "Oh, never mind" gesture. The video is here.
Status: Solved: Yes, she did. It doesn't seem intentional, but the hug clearly didn't connect. Maybe that is why Sandy repeatedly called Meryl her lover in her speech, to make up for causing her to look a fool on television.

Mystery: What was up with those lamp shades?
What Happened: At various points in the broadcast, a giant wall of lamp shades descended from heaven to make the stage look like the party room at a T.G.I. Friday's in Wilkes-Barre.
Status: Solved: It was a mistake—a very bad mistake.

Mystery: Does Cameron Diaz not know how to read?
What Happened: When she came out to present the award for Best Animated Feature with Steve Carell, they read their little banter and Cameron called Steve "Jude" by mistake before he corrected her and said their skit was originally written for Jude Law and they never fixed the Teleprompter
Status: Solved: It was just a really bad joke, people. See, they talk about how Animated Features keep their beautiful faces off screen, and then we find out that it was supposed to be written for Jude Law, because, of course, no one would ever call Steve Carell attractive. Ha! Jokes. Too bad the show was so lame and riddled with mistakes that their very plausible meaning was a little too plausible.

Mystery: What the fuck happened to Judd Nelson?
What Happened: When a bunch of brat packers, including a radiant Molly Ringwald, came out to pay tribute to John Hughes, it was apparent that all of them had aged, but none as badly as The Breakfast Club bad boy, who was practically unrecognizable.
Status: Unsolved. He's still working as an actor, so no one thinks he is destitute or drug-riddled or something. Everyone noticed he looked crazy but no one knows why. Yet.

Mystery: Was Kathy Ireland drunk or on drugs?
What Happened: The former supermodel was one of three co-hosts for ABC's 30-minute red carpet special before the show began. She was horrible. Bad interview followed bad interview, she seemed semi-coherent, and her non-microphone-holding arm barely moved.
Status: Solved. She was not on drugs. Now we have even more questions. Considering she has a billion (yes, that's a b) dollar design business and we have never seen her host on TV before, what the hell was she doing there? Of all the people that ABC could have tapped to do the gig, why choose an inexperience lady who looks like she has a prosthetic? Is Kelly Ripa too normal or something? And if we wanted some crazy old lady with lots of plastic surgery on the red carpet, why not bring back Joan Rivers? Our mind is still boggling.

Mystery: Will people watch again?
What Happened: Last night's telecast had the highest ratings in five years with 41.3 million viewers. It was also one of the worst productions in recent memories. Will people bother next year?
Status: Solved. Of course. It's the Oscars. Maybe not as many, but you know they'll be there. And please, please, just let Neil Patrick Harris host next year. He promises his tux won't be nearly as shiny.

Mystery: Why the hell was there street dancing at the Oscars?
What Happened: A troupe of television dancers were given the stage to do strange hip-hop contortions to the classically-influenced music of the Best Score nominees.
Status: Unclear. We solved how it happened—director Adam Shankman who is a choreographer and TV dance show host—but we will forever be asking why. Why, why, why?

The Vanity Fair party brought out some stars ET doesn't see on the red carpet too often, such as Jay Leno and wife Mavis. While Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are on location in Europe and missed out on this year's Oscars, we got the next best thing. Angie's dad Jon Voight told us all about his recent visit with the leading Hollywood family.

"It was wonderful. Each of the children is very special in their own way and Angie and Brad are wonderful parents, so I just really very, very happy," Jon said of seeing his daughter and grandchildren.

The stars also recalled their favorite moments of the awards show. Cameron Diaz said, "I think Sandra Bullock's speech was unbelievable. There were so many moments this evening. Mo'Nique, Kathryn Bigelow, it was just really a great night. The acceptance speeches are always my favorite part of it because it's an opportunity for people to be grateful and show their gratitude."

With one Glee girl holding down the fort at Elton, Dianna Agron looked perfectly poised on her way into VF. Bar Refaeli also went long and white without her own Academy Award nominee, Leonardo DiCaprio. Jessica Simpson in a slimming one-shoulder gown joined in on the award season finale. Lenny Kravitz brought his daughter Zoe out late while he was simultaneously making a funny appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's Handsome Men's Club skit along with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, and many other good-looking guys.

The afterparty fun kicked off in LA last night with the legendary Vanity Fair post-Oscars party. The Sunset Towers hosted stars who attended the show and those that didn't, like Victoria Beckham and Jessica Simpson who chatted with Heidi Klum. Sandra Bullock clutched her Academy Award, and her The Blind Side costar Quentin Aaron posed with Rachel McAdams. Kathryn Bigelow and Jeremy Renner looked thrilled to bring out their The Hurt Locker gold, and fellow winner Jeff Bridges smiled alongside fellow Crazy Heart actor Maggie Gyllenhaal. Cameron Diaz changed out of her red carpet dress and into something shorter as she chatted with Jason Segel, and elsewhere Sean Penn shared a drink with Kid Rock.

Kristen Stewart, meanwhile, chattated away alongside Angelica Huston, as Inglourious Basterds' Eli Roth cuddled up to his apparently new lady Peaches Geldof. Rachel McAdam's ex Josh Lucas gave some bunny ears to Sam Worthington and Carey Mulligan, while happy couples like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Russell Brand and Katy Perry only had eyes for each other.
