Rafael Benitez : “I can guarantee we will finish in the top four.”

The tale of Liverpool ’s season thus far seems to be taking a step backwards when people expect it the least.

Before their loss against Wigan on Monday night, the Reds had only lost one League match in 2010, an understandable 1—0 defeat at the Emirates against Arsenal.

Media pressure on the team was evaporating, and conspiracy theories purporting the idea that Benitez’s master plan was to get sacked so he could return to native Spain seemed less and less credible.

That theory remains questionable, but Liverpool’s performance at the DW Stadium on Monday night was beyond questionable.

Against a Wigan side that was on a seven match winless run in the League, Rafa’s charges did not play like Champions League qualification contenders, in a deserved 1—0 win for Wigan.

Just days before the match, Rafa made it clear that Liverpool could not afford anymore slip ups:

“Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa will be very dangerous so we cannot make many mistakes.”

So having made a fairly big mistake by losing to Wigan, have Liverpool thrown away Champions League qualification?

Well, Liverpool have now played more games than City, Spurs, or Villa.

Villa in particular, have three games on hand on the Merseysiders, and are only one win behind.

City are a point ahead with two games in hand, while Spurs are level on points with City, having played one match more.

On the face of it, Rafa’s guarantee that Liverpool would finish fourth does not look good value for anyone’s money at the moment.

Upon closer examination, do their chances of sneaking into Europe’s premier competition seem better?

Let’s take a look.

First off, Tottenham’s run in includes a trip to champions Manchester United, as well as visits to White Hart Lane by Chelsea and Arsenal.

Furthermore, the FA Cup quarterfinal against Fulham will serve as a further distraction, especially if the Spurs win the forthcoming replay, which will be played at home.

As for Aston Villa, they face Manchester City in their second to last League match of the season, in a six pointer that would almost certainly play a pivotal role in determining who gets the ticket to Europe.

On top of that, Chelsea awaits the Villains in both League and Cup competition.

Manchester City’s final matches include ties with neighbours United, title contenders Arsenal, and a trip to Craven Cottage to meet dangerous Fulham.

Liverpool, who have already beaten United once, face them again before a trip to Chelsea in May.

Apart from a potentially tricky visit to Birmingham, their league list seems to be a tad lighter, albeit not by much.

The Reds do still have the matter of the Europa League at hand though. One would assume Benitez would throw away the competition for League commitments as the season reaches its final stages, but I think it is unlikely that he would do it anytime soon.

To sum up, Liverpool could still finish fourth, due to the fact that none of their fellow contenders have simple run ins.

Personally, however, I think they will just miss out, finishing fifth. No offence meant to Liverpool supporters whatsoever, but I believe Spurs and Villa are more desperate for Europe having not qualified in recent times, while City not only can be brilliant on their day, but they have a manger who will almost certainly be sacked should they fail to attain the fourth spot.

Which of course, bring us to Liverpool’s manager...

The Attitude of Liverpool and The Manager

Rafa Benitez seemed to reference his “guarantee” of a top four finish when he said this following the Wigan defeat:

“We have to show more character if we want to be in the top four. You cannot guarantee anything if you do not show character or attitude.”

Benitez is not famous for lambasting his team so publicly, but this piece of brutal truth from the manager is exactly what his players needed to hear.

Too often this season, failures have been sugar coated and targets set have been quietly downgraded.

The manager himself is guilty of these mistakes, but now with his team back to full fitness, excuses can no longer be an option. One way or another, Rafael Benitez will have to motivate these stars, if he is achieve what was supposed to be the bare minimum for the Reds at the start of the season.

As a final note, Benitez crowing about a victory against Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn was short sighted.

When you are manage a team chasing Champions League qualification, patting yourself on the back publicly for defeating a mid table side on a shoestring budget brings no benefit whatsoever.

"It was kind of like in that movie 'Dumb and Dumber', where the man says that there is a chance, it's just one in a million." That is how LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena described the chances of Landon Donovan remaining with Everton until the end of the Premier League Season.

Now, his amazing movie reference aside, Arena is surely being cursed by American soccer fans from Providence to Aspen for his stubborn stance on his captain’s immediate future. Lloyd Christmas never did land Mary Swanson, and it appears that come Mar. 15, Landon will be back at home in LA getting ready for another MLS season, and you know what? That’s just fine.

There is no question that Donovan’s stay with the Liverpool club has been an exciting stretch for American soccer fans. From his very first match against Arsenal, Landon looked as though he had been with Everton for years. In the next few games, it became nothing short of amazing just how well Donovan seemed to not only fit in with his new side of world class players, but flourish.

He has consistently been their most dangerous player on the wing and his the combination of his soccer IQ, field vision and blistering speed have made him an instant star with the Goodison Park faithful; and why not? The team is 5-0 on their home pitch since his arrival.

Last weekend, Donovan was given a heroes farewell by the Everton fans who have more than embraced their 10 week rental. In the wake of the Arsenal game, he seemed a suitable addition to an injury-ridden squad.

However, by the time Everton had come from behind to beat the then-league leaders Chelsea a few weeks later, he was a sensation. That night, Donovan was the best player on a field full of high profile international stars and suddenly the stigma surrounding America’s best player, stemming from past failures in Europe, had all but vanished.

From frequent chants of “U-S-A” to the creation of a Facebook group pleading for the Everton brass to work out an extension of their deal with LA, Donovan has surely left his mark on this Premier League season with the Toffees.

The 10 weeks, however, have been enough and it is indeed time for Landon to come home. Now, let me just say that I do not necessarily want Landon Donovan to come back to the MLS.

In fact, it pains me to think that in a few weeks we’ll be back to watching him battle foes like a certain hometown team of mine that is named after this generation’s version of Jolt Cola rather than the likes of Man U and Liverpool. However, at the end of the day, his safe return stateside is the right move for several reasons.

For one thing, he really has nothing left to play for at Everton. He has proven himself worthy against the world’s elite as he was arguably Everton’s best player for their toughest stretch of the season. Everton also sits eighth in the Premier League, has been eliminated from the Europa League and has little hope of returning to European football next season.

So, in the realm of “proving” his talent to his critics and himself, Landon has accomplished that in spades. Unless the United States get embarrassed in South Africa as a direct result of numerous misplays by Donovan himself, he will surely have lucrative and exciting opportunities waiting for him in the next transfer window.

In fact, there are already wide-spread rumors that Chelsea is eyeing a bid for the American if they fail to sign Joe Cole to extension at season’s end (Cole is expected to leave for Manchester United on a free transfer).

Although this is simply a rumor and may not ever come to fruition, it serves as a clear indication of just how far the regard for Donovan’s game has come in the last 10-weeks.

Another reason Donovan should come home is his health. While it is still way too far away to know whether or not this will be Donovan’s last World Cup, one thing is indisputable: The US cannot survive an injury to Donovan this summer.

There is obviously no guarantee that Donovan will not get hurt playing in the MLS while preparing for South Africa, however, it is much more likely he would sustain an injury in the much more physically demanding Premier League.

The last thing I need on a hung over Saturday morning in April is to wake up and see a recap of Donovan being taken off on a stretcher.

I thought I was at my limit when Clint Dempsey went down against Blackburn, but after watching Stuart Holden break his leg against the Dutch last week (thanks to a late and arguably red card-worthy challenge from Premier League player, Nigel De Jong) I would be holding my breath anytime Donovan took the field from now until May.

Not only is he not a physically imposing player, but with his style of play dependant on his speed and work rate, it is not rare for him to be the victim of late and dangerous tackles.

This past year saw Donovan’s confidence and form soar to new heights with a win over the Spaniards in the Confederations Cup, an MLS MVP award and an outstanding loan spell with Everton. This means, however, that he has been playing essentially non-stop for over a year.

Although he is still just 28, one would have to imagine that all of this playing, especially in England, is slowly taking its toll on his body and with several months still to go until the World Cup, it is more than possible that he will be feeling the effects in South Africa.

Basically, I am just not sure what another few weeks risking his health, his legs and that sky high confidence is going to do to prepare a man that had 100 caps at the age of 26 and already has two World Cups under his belt.

Finally, the elephant in the room: David Beckham. I LOVED when Donovan came home from the Confederations Cup last summer and news broke that he had blasted his teammate for raising his nose at the American league in favor of extending his loan with AC Milan. Landon was completely right in what he said and it was a rare display from an otherwise soft spoken, hardworking professional like Donovan.

Although Landon and Beckham are at completely different stages of their careers (Landon settling into his prime and Beckham grasping tightly to the last life in his once magical right leg) the similarities in their reluctance to leave a top-flight league for the MLS is too obvious to ignore.

In fact, one could easily argue it is worse with Donovan doing it this season, not only because he is clearly a hypocrite after finding his own club success abroad, but because he is now the captain of a side that narrowly missed bringing home the MLS Cup last year.

If Donovan’s main concern last year was Beckham’s level of commitment to the Galaxy, then how can he possibly turn around and snub his team only months after signing a four-year extension?

Ideally, Landon stays healthy, plays well this summer and Everton is forced to cough up the money to convince the MLS to let him go for good. While several other clubs with more flexibility will most likely find the funds to make such a move, Everton should be his first choice. He is comfortable with the squad, trusted by the manager and beloved by the club’s supporters.

And although a strong performance and a goal on June 12 could change that last factor, it is clear that Goodison is a place for him to flourish and finally raise the expectations of American players in Europe’s top leagues. Let’s just hope that sequel is a little better than Dumb and Dumberer .

Apologies for the absence of a blog entry yesterday, for some reason my stomach decided it hated me, and the cramps and sickness kept me in bed feeling sorry for myself all day. Still not well, but here goes...

Anyway, great win on Saturday, and we have another meaningless match to play tonight. It's not as if it matters is it?

We have the following matches still to play in the Premier League (prev score this season in brackets):

Away to Hull (we beat them 3-0 at home)
Home to West Ham (we wasted a lead to draw 2-2 away)
Away to Birmingham (we beat them 3-1 at home)
Home to Wolves (we beat them 4-1 away)
Away to Sp*rs (we beat them 3-0 at home)
Away to Wigan (we beat them 4-0 at home)
Home to Man City (we lost away 4-2 but I think we can do them at home)
Away to Blackburn (we beat them 6-2 at home)
Home to Fulham (we beat them very luckily 1-0 away)

It looks like we could win all of those matches - although the Sp*rs match away is likely to be the hardest. On the other hand, Wigan beat a poor Liverpool last night 1-0, and although Liverpool were very poor, it shows that teams battling for their survival can always play up.

Why am I talking about the Premiership when we've got an important game tonight in the Champions League? Is it because I believe we'll walk it? Erm... No.

I've been partly ignoring it because I fear it will be the end of our CL campaign, but partly because I secretly hope we go out. It feels like too big a distraction to the EPL campaign. I'd rather have the league title than the CL title this season. I think there's more chance of it - it's a real possibility, especially with the teams we have left to play.

On the other hand, the CL is a big battle - even if we do beat Porto and stop them scoring (and make no mistake, it will be no easy match) - we'd still have to face a plethora of the hardest teams in Europe including, sadly, Man Utd and probably Chelsea too. They have been bogey teams for us this season and I would quite like to avoid seeing them again.

So, yes, I'd be happy to sacrifice the CL run for the sake of a very real chance at the league title.

The Match

We're without even more players, including Fabregas, and as I wrote after Saturday's game, whilst we can win without Fabregas - he IS the creative director in midfield. Without him we don't have someone who can 'direct' the team in quite the same way. It looks likely Nasri will step up into Fabregas boots for the evening, and one can only hope he provides half the genius we regularly see.

Porto will be fired up, and feeling they can at least score (and probably qualify). I think even a weakened Arsenal can beat Porto providing we can cut out the stupid mistakes. However I feel our inability to stop teams scoring against us could be our undoing.

So... regardless of how crap I still feel, I will be going to the match tonight, and cheering the lads on. Hopefully see you all tomorrow!

Last night I witnessed my team put on a great attacking display against pathetic opposition. Had I been a Wigan fan, that is exactly what I would be saying today; however, the bitter reality of things is, I am a Liverpool supporter so I must somehow find the words to summarise another pungent performance.

Some may argue that Rafa, could have picked a better team going into the game - others would say that his tactics were far too negative, but the truth of the matter is, we should have been able to brush aside a struggling Wigan team regardless of who started or not.

By now, I would usually try to pick the positives from the game, but not even the plus side of a battery can'y fuel any form of optimistic thought. We, in short, have dug a hole so deep that it's going to take more than a ladder and rope to climb out of. Today, I have to listen to pundits dismantel the club I have grown to love so dearly. Sometimes, though, I wish my feelings for this great tradition weren't as strong, that way, days like today wouldn't be so hard. I'm not just talking about yesterdays defeat, losing I can handle - although I'd rather not. It's the manner in which we lost that has destroyed me.

We may aswell have had 'free-ride' tattood on our fore-heads. Possession was given away time and time again and ultimately, this was our downfall. Usually, you would look to your captain to set an example ahead of such an important game. The example was set, unfortunately it wasn't the right one. SG began proceedings by giving the ball away, this spread like wild-fire and before you knew it, the whole team had been infected by a serious case of the Voronins; awful.

It hurts me to say this, but last night signalled the end of our Champions League aspirations. Going into the game we were joint favourites to finish fourth, now though, we will have dropped down the pecking order. We had a epic task ahead of us to finish fourth before last nights game, now it seems like we are in search of a miracle as we are set to fight three major factors:

1) - Tottenhams game in hand
2) - Man Citys two games in hand
3) - Aston Villas three games in hand.

As things stand, we sit in sixth, having already lost 9 games; only one team has ever lost 9 games and finished fourth and that's Leeds Utd - Scary.

We are running on fumes, or more to the point, living on empty hope. History can only take us so far before we look back and realise that the history we are currently writing, will be the only thing people look back and see.

After the game, Rafa looked like a broken man. For the first time, he admitted that we was poor - This coming from a man who is so quick to commend the work ethic of his players even after losing. I could sit here and talk about the players, but that is another blog entry al-together.

Before I wrap things up, I would to thank all those who par-took in the live blogging experience last night. It eased the pain of such a traumatic performance. Liam will be taking the next Live blog, which will commence on Thursday 5:45GMT.

Only a week remains between now and the end of Landon Donovan's loan stint with Everton. The pacy American has excelled -- one horrible miss aside -- in his 10 week adventure in Liverpool.

American fans are bellowing out reasons why he should stay. And that is a logical choice. Keep Donovan in one of the world's most challenging leagues they say, and he'll be ready to rip it up at the World Cup.

But a return to Los Angeles also provides opportunity to boost the league's credibility in a way that people tend to push aside. In a haste to keep Donovan over in England, returning to Los Angeles -- which is the likeliest outcome -- opens up a new door.

Consider that Donovan has developed primarily in MLS, he, along with other players (Jozy Altidore, Stuart Holden, Maurice Edu) have shown the ability to translate MLS play onto a higher level.

So what happens if Donovan returns to MLS and the Galaxy, plays well, and then takes that to the next level -- the World Cup? While that obviously doesn't mean MLS has reached new heights of player development, surely it speaks towards the league's credibility. And that's the opportunity he can carve out, and improve the league's stature.

Surely it won't happen overnight. And no matter what Donovan does, MLS remains a stepping stone to the European leagues that play at a much higher level. Given MLS players and their performances against lower-level competition in January and February, there is a long way to go still.

No matter what happens, Donovan has proved many doubters wrong with his play in England. Never before had he shown that he could cut it in among the world's best. And he won't let a return to MLS hamper his play in South Africa -- after all, he made the jump from Los Angeles to Everton look smooth enough.

Now, he must take that to the U.S. national team, and cash in at the Cup. Then he'll be able to kiss MLS goodbye, and take his game to the next level permanently.

It would have seemed unthinkable not too long ago that Joe Cole could be considering a future away from Stamford Bridge.

But much has happened since the last time Joe Cole got injured.

The versatile England man, who would be an automatic starter either on the left wing or just behind the two strikers, finds himself increasingly left on the bench for frustrating periods by Carlo Ancelotti.

Add to that the fact that the 28-year-old's contract at Chelsea is due to expire at the end of this season, and on the outset it seems that Joe Cole wants a pay hike in what might be his last long-term contract of the season.

And with Roman Abrahamovic unwilling to concede to the demands of a player no longer considered to be worth a full game by the current Chelsea coach, there have been vibes that Joe Cole might be on the way out, most sensationally on a free transfer, and to add a bit of spice to that, to Chelsea's rival.

So where do you think Joe Cole should go?

Chelsea: Because, quite frankly, I believe this is really the best choice for both Chelsea and Joe Cole.

Why? Because all said and done, Joe Cole has the quality to make the cut in the star-studded Chelsea lineup.

He is an intelligent player, reasonably quick, and a very good dribbler of the ball. Joe Cole also is admired around West London as one of the rather humbler and good-work rate sort.

All he has to do is hit that rich vain of form that has made him the man he is, and convince Carlo Ancelotti and Roman Abrahamovic that he is the right man for the job.

Chelsea are monitoring Landon Donovan, who has been a great success in his loan stint here, but there is no doubt that in Joe Cole, Chelsea would have a player who has been part of the present set up for a long time, and is still roughly the same age as well.

Manchester United: Manchester United are said to be monitoring the Joe Cole situation quite keenly.

There is no doubt that whichever club Joe Cole chooses to swap for Chelsea will have in their armoury a player who is deadly creative, as well as a dead accurate crosser and passer. Manchester United would like to have a player like him on the left.

It would be mouthwatering for a Manchester United fan to see him play Wayne Rooney in and the combination is potentially devastating.

And Joe Cole comes in for free. Manchester United couldn't really ask for more.

But then again, one wonders if debt-ridden Manchester United will be willing to meet Joe Cole's wage demands. Or would they rather choose to pick up a younger, less known player on the left wing, pay him less, and make him one for the future?

Secondly, having been an unwaveringly loyal Chelsea player all these years, would it really seem right for him to go to a rival?

Tottenham Hotspur: One step down it would perhaps seem to the untrained eye, but there is no doubt that Harry Redknapp is doing something special at White Hart Lane.

No more the also-rans of the Premier League, Tottenham are seriously pushing their claim for a Champions League berth.

They have been fourth for a fairly long time and their performances, although patchy, make it look like they'll last till the end of the season and reach the Holy Grail of the Champions League which they have aspired for all these years.

So there is a good chance that if Joe Cole makes the move to Tottenham Hotspur, he won't be missing out on Champions League football.

The fact also remains that Harry Redknapp is an admirer of Cole, as he is of any creative, fluid-passing midfielder. Harry would certainly love to bolster his team by signing Joe Cole, but the salary demands again can be deterring.

Liverpool: Wouldn't I love to see Joe Cole at Liverpool?

A quick, Bosman transfer fix for that terribly weak left-wing position sounds really good to me.

Unfortunately, we haven't got the money and I'm not sure Rafael Benitez is a big fan of Joe Cole. I just don't see Joe Cole fitting into Benitez's system, but I would be delighted should Joe Cole come to Liverpool.

Manchester City: Manchester City are others linked with Joe Cole, as they are forever linking themselves to players of good calibre. And I feel there's an outside chance of Cole actually going to City.

City can use a player of his quality to feed Tevez and Bellamy and that sort of attacking lineup sounds pretty sweet to me. Manchester City too are knocking on the Champions League door and have a half-decent chance of getting through.

Inter Milan: I'm not sure if Inter Milan are linked, but boy would that be one hell of a move!

Back under the stylish overcoat of Jose, Joe Cole would flourish in Italy's comparatively slower, more tactical style of play and would provide an added dimension to Inter's attacking playing style.

The way I see it, wage demands aside, if Joe Cole does move, it'll probably be to a club which will offer him Champions League football and a regular place in the starting lineup.

But I still feel that Chelsea is the best place for him.

The reports that are coming out are just a result of Joe Cole's frustration on the bench and his worry about whether Fabio Capello will take him to South Africa on current form.

Clearly, Joe Cole is not a money-hungry footballer. He's just a man who enjoys being on the field a lot more than watching from the sidelines.

Senior officers say site shirking its responsibilities in light of Peter Chapman's conviction for murder of schoolgirl

Senior police officers clashed with the UK's most-used social networking site today, accusing Facebook of ignoring worrying trends that it is providing a safe haven for predatory paedophiles by refusing to sign up to a "panic button" for children and young people.

Jim Gamble, chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Unit (Ceop), was joined by the country's lead officer on homicide to tackle the site about its repeated refusal to sign up to a key safety practice adopted by many other similar websites.

The American-owned site has 23 million active users in the UK but refuses to display an official "panic button" that links users directly to Ceop to report suspected activities by predatory paedophiles.

The police officers spoke out after the conviction of Peter Chapman for the rape and murder of 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall.

Chapman, a convicted double rapist, posed as a young man called Peter Cartwright on Facebook and spent time grooming Ashleigh before the pair exchanged mobile phone numbers and agreed to meet. Ashleigh was raped and suffocated by Chapman, who dumped her body in a field near Sedgefield in County Durham last October.

Facebook has refused repeated requests by Ceop to include a panic button on its site. Information from the button is used to build intelligence reports on suspects which can become part of police investigations into paedophiles, rapists and violent individuals.

Ceop revealed today that nearly half of the reports received about Facebook last year involved individuals who were suspected of grooming young people on the site. But because Facebook does not have the Ceop button on its site, only one or two complaints came from Facebook itself.

Children use the button to make reports to Ceop's specialist police teams about suspected abuse, grooming and severe bullying. More than 500 such reports are received each month, four a day involve cases where children are in immediate danger. Although Bebo and MSN have adopted the button, Facebook has refused.

Gamble said: "We have been asking social networking sites for too long to do the right thing.

"Since we launched the button in 2009, we have carried out careful analysis to look at varying sites who haven't adopted our service and the trends are worrying."

Last year 267 reports were received about suspicious activity on Facebook. Almost half – 43% – related to cases of suspected grooming. But in 81% of cases, the individuals who felt under threat had to seek out other sites to make their reports to Ceop because Facebook has not adopted the direct link button.

"This is just not good enough," said Gamble. "Their argument for not putting our button into their environment, in my opinion, doesn't hold water."

Last year Ceop intelligence reports led to 334 people being arrested.

Jon Stoddart, the Association of Chief Police Officers's lead officer for homicide supported Gamble's call for Facebook to adopt the button. Facebook said it has yet to see any evidence that the Ceop reporting mechanism helps tackle the problem. A spokeswoman insisted the site was "one of the safest" places on the web.

Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrats' home affairs spokesman, also called on Facebook to fix the "glaring failure" to include the Ceop button.

Alan Johnson, the home secretary, said the government was looking at ways to alert authorities when convicted sex offenders were online.

"What our people in the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) agency do is go online themselves to try and lure in these people," he said.

"Whether we can get the technology to flag up when they're [sex offenders] online is something we need to look at."

Merseyside police, who should have been monitoring Chapman, today referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The force acted after revelations that it waited nine months before issuing a national wanted alert for Chapman, after realising last year that he had vanished from his home.

There was more controversy for Facebook today when a 27-year-old man, David Calvert, was wrongly identified as Jon Venables on Facebook, and some 2,370 people joined a group to discuss the "new identity" of one of the Bulger killers.

Calvert, originally from Liverpool, was the subject of similarly false rumours five years ago and has publicly described the hatred directed towards him, and fears for his family's safety.

Steven Gerrard is unlikely to face censure from the Football Association for allegedly flicking a V-sign at referee Andre Marriner during Liverpool's costly defeat at Wigan Athletic last night.

Footage of Gerrard's reaction to his 82nd minute booking at the DW Stadium appears to show the Liverpool captain gesturing towards the match official and mouthing an obscenity. Marriner, however, is believed to have witnessed the incident at the time and deemed it unworthy of further punishment.

Unless the FA are informed the referee has reconsidered his initial verdict, no charges are expected to be brought against Gerrard, who captained England against Egypt last week in the wake of the John Terry controversy. The FA are likely to let the matter drop with Liverpool officials, who spoke to the midfielder after the game, adamant Gerrard's gesture was not offensive or intended for the referee.

El Real Madrid, obligado a la remontada ante un Lyon respondón

La final del Bernabéu, objetivo del nuevo proyecto, en el aire

El Real Madrid afronta mañana (20.45 horas/Telemadrid) su primera final de la temporada, aunque se trate sólo del partido de vuelta de los octavos de final de la Liga de Campeones, donde tiene que remontar el 1-0 encajado en la ida ante el Olympique de Lyon.

Manuel Pellegrini se ha negado durante la temporada a tratar los partidos como finales, ya que, según sus palabras, después de una final se acaba todo, pero mañana podría ser el desgraciado caso si el equipo blanco no se impone por dos goles de diferencia.

La disputa de la final en el Santiago Bernabéu es una presión extra, pero también debería ser una motivación para una plantilla confeccionada para ganar títulos, con "Europa marcado en su ADN", como expresó el presidente Florentino Pérez.

La presentación la semana pasada de las entradas para la final de la 'Champions', competición que el equipo blanco "ama sobre todas las cosas", fue sólo el pistoletazo de salida de los actos previos al partido ansiado del próximo 22 de mayo. Hoy se conoció el diseño del balón, en el escenario de la final, el mismo en el que mañana el Real Madrid deberá superar el que ha sido su 'muro' las últimas temporadas.

Y es que el club más laureado del continente vivió una etapa dorada con tres títulos en los años pares de 1998 a 2002, pero desde 2004 no supera el primer cruce, cuando eliminó al Bayern Múnich en octavos para caer después sorprendentemente ante el Mónaco en cuartos.

Así, los últimos ocho años han estado plagados de sombras, pero, sobre todo, los cinco consecutivos en los que el Real Madrid no ha sido capaz de superar ni siquiera una eliminatoria, con Juventus, Arsenal, Bayern Múnich, Roma y Liverpool como verdugos.

La victoria ante los muniqueses (1-0) tras el 1-1 de la ida, debe ser el referente, aunque, sobre todo, la lograda en 2002, ante el mismo rival alemán (2-0, tras el 1-0 de la ida), pese a que el Lyon haya conseguido evitar la derrota en su dos desplazamientos previos a la capital española en dos campañas consecutivas 2005/06 y 06/07 (1-1 y 2-2), tras haber ganado en ambos encuentros en la ida (3-0 y 2-0).

El recuerdo no es el mejor, y más teniendo en cuenta que los blancos han perdido las tres últimas eliminatorias ante equipos galos (AS Mónaco y Paris Saint-Germain, en dos ocasiones), aunque se aferran al espíritu de las grandes remontadas que han hecho del Bernabéu un estadio legendario para darle la vuelta al gol de Makoun de la ida.

El equipo se muestra optimista y cargado de confianza para superar la eliminatoria, y más después del éxtasis del pasado sábado ante el Sevilla, donde consiguieron una victoria y sufrida y trabajada, con tintes de épica, pero basada en el buen juego.

El triunfo, además del liderato, les supuso una inyección de moral que puede ser decisiva, a la que hay que sumar la comunión con el público que volvió a ser sublime y que mañana no se espera inferior.

El único contratiempo para mañana podrían ser las concesiones defensivas, como se vieron el sábado, ya que un gol del Lyon obligaría a conseguir tres, aunque sea algo factible con la gran 'pegada' del equipo, que volverá a estar liderado por Cristiano Ronaldo, que se encuentra en un gran estado.

GUTI Y VAN DER VAART APUNTAN A LA TITULARIDAD.

Las bajas por lesión de Benzema y Drenthe y las de los sancionados Xabi Alonso y Marcelo, no conceden demasiadas hipótesis sobre el posible equipo inicial, al que volvería Guti, tras demostrar ante el Sevilla que, en buenas condiciones físicas, es un futbolista decisivo.

Higuaín sería el estilete ofensivo, y Kaká también será titular, aunque no atraviese su mejor momento y su cambio en el último partido coincidiera con la remontada del equipo. Van der Vaart, que suplió al brasileño con garantías cuando estuvo lesionado, también ha hecho merecimientos para estar entre los elegidos, aunque habrá que esperar para confirmar su presencia.

En el partido de ida la sorpresa fue la presencia de Diarra en el centro del campo, uno de los motivos por los que Pellegrini se llevó las mayores críticas, aunque quizá el técnico chileno prefiera repetir un centro del campo más defensivo para detener la fortaleza de los franceses. Y es que en el partido de ida el Olympique de Lyon ahogó a los madridistas, cortándoles todas las vías de salida y evitando incluso ocasiones claras de gol.

Para mañana, Claude Puel también tendrá estudiado el partido para conseguir superar una ronda que también se les ha atragantado en las últimas tres campañas, la última ante el FC Barcelona.

Sin embargo, el Lyon, que destaca por su fortaleza defensiva, sólo ha perdido en una eliminatoria en la que se hubiera impuesto en la ida, y mañana confía en 'noquear' al anfitrión de la final y superar este peldaño, pese a la baja de última hora de Bastos, y las dudas hasta última hora de Lisandro López y Cissokho, dos piezas claves.

Los galos no son el otrora equipo dominador en Francia, y vienen de empatar para mantenerse en una discreta tercera plaza, aunque, por el momento les sirve para asegurar su presencia en la máxima competición europea la próxima campaña, mientras se centran en doblegar al Real Madrid y tratar de estar en el sorteo del día 19.

However it shows the big business that online adult sites create and as such ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has resurrected a plan to create an Internet domain specifically for adult websites, three years after it was rejected.

The .xxx scheme will be pondered upon on March 12 and if approved could see the selling of .xxx domain names by the end of the year. The decision to make adult-orientated domain names had previously been given the go ahead in 2005, but it was reversed after protests from conservative groups in the US.

However it has now been decided that the reversal was unfair and the scheme should be reconsidered.

New era of online content

The idea for adult only domain names has been around for a while, first being proposed in 2001 in order to create a 'digital silo' for online pornography. The .xxx domain would enable those that wished to, to completely filter out such sites.

The only problem is that the scheme is voluntary, so adult sites ending with .com would still exist.

"If the contract is signed, we could be selling names by the end of the year," said Stuart Lawley, chairman of ICM Registry, which put forward the plans for .xxx and would sell the domain names to the BBC.

When asked about the decision to revisit the scheme, Lawley said, "Our claim was that ICANN came up with a lot of different excuses."

The board concluded that ICANN's decision to reject the .xxx plan was "not consistent with the application of neutral, objective and fair documented policy" and should be revisited. Mr Lawley described it as a "landmark" ruling.

A decision will be made on the 12 March, but a spokesperson for ICANN said there was "no indication what action the ICANN board will take".

David Calvert fears for his life after he was wrongly named as James Bulger's killer on social networking site

A father of two says he fears for his safety after he was falsely accused on Facebook of being Jon Venables.

By 8am today more than 2,370 people had joined a group on the site asking whether Venables was David Calvert.

The group was removed after complaints to Facebook, but the rumours persist on other sites such as Yahoo Answers, with people claiming to have learned his identity via text messages.

Calvert, who is originally from Liverpool, now lives in Fleetwood, near Blackpool. He was the subject of similar false rumours five years ago and endured a torrent of abuse. He had to produce family photo albums to prove his identity to doubters, and a panic button was installed at his home.

At the time Calvert said he was terrified for his partner and their young sons. "People have been turning up at my neighbours' houses with pictures of the killers printed off the internet, and saying one of them is me. Now I hear that threats are being made and I'm worried that someone will come for me or my girlfriend or hurt my kids," he said. "I'm too scared to go out of the house now. I have these people saying they will get me out no matter what and I'm terrified at what they might do."

He said the trouble started six months earlier when he mentioned to a neighbour that he had served time in a Liverpool prison when he was younger. He had served a four-month prison sentence for fraud.

The justice secretary, Jack Straw, yesterday promised a thorough review of how Venables was supervised in the community before he was recalled to prison over alleged child porn offences.

Lady Butler-Sloss, the former president of the high court's family division, who granted Venables anonymity on his release from prison, stressed "the enormous importance of protecting his anonymity now and if he is released, because those who wanted to kill him in 2001 are likely to be out there now".

Ryan Babel insists Liverpool can bounce back from their defeat to Wigan Athletic last night.

Despite the defeat and the manner of it - Liverpool were poor and Fernando Torres wasted the few chances that came his way - Babel insists his team can't be written off in their top four quest.

He said: "We definitely still have faith we can get fourth place. It will be harder and it's important to get three points in every game, as it was before Wigan. That's why it is so disappointing to have lost.

"It is frustrating that we had built up some confidence by winning games, but one game can spoil the confidence. The disappointment is very big for everybody, but we have to start again."

FILM: As part of their Dan Perjovschi: Late News exhibit, the ROM and the ICC are screening Bloody Cartoons, a documentary film by Karsten Kjaer. The film follows the Danish Mohammed cartoons controversy from back in 2005. The film is part of a series called "Why Democracy?" produced by Steps International, which explores the role of democracy in its many different forms. The incident raises questions about censorship, freedom of expression, and journalistic ethics when dealing with controversial issues. All of those topics will be discussed during a panel following the screening. CLIMATE CHANGE: For the next two days a group of high school and university students from Canada, United Kingdom, Russia, and Brazil will meet via video conference to discuss climate change. FILM: MDFF (Medium Density Fibreboard Films) is a local production company whose 2008 piece, Princess Margaret Blvd., has garnered several awards and accolades, including a recent Genie nomination for Best Live Action Short Drama. Tonight, they've collected three of their dramatic short films—Assault, Princess Margaret Blvd., and Out in that Deep Blue Sea (which we dug when it showed at TIFF last year)—and are screening them as the "MDF Trilogy" [PDF]. Director Kazik Radwanski will be present after the screening for a discussion moderated by Magali Simard, TIFF's Canadian programming coordinator, covering the young filmmakers' growth both creatively and professionally following the festival tours each film has been on. MUSIC: Three different indie jammers have the stage at Wrongbar tonight, vying for a spot on your button-covered messenger bag. Tigercity is a young band based out of Brooklyn, New York (via Northampton, Massachusetts), whose rock/pop tunes have opened shows for both Jamie Lidell and M.I.A. in the past. Liverpool native alternative band Wave Machines and experimental pop/rock outfit The Silent Years will open the show. Wrongbar (1279 Queen Street West), doors at 10 p.m., $10.50.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce insists striker Fraizer Campbell is a natural as a winger.

Bruce says he's convinced the England U21 international - his first summer signing as Stadium of Light boss - has what it takes.

"Fraizer's played there many, many times," Bruce told safc.com. "In fact, I thought he played his best game for us against Villa in the cup, where he was terrific against [Stephen] Warnock.

"I saw him last year playing for Spurs against Liverpool in a wide right area, and he played very well.

"Fraizer isn't bothered at all [where he plays]. He gives me legs, extra freshness and something different to what Steed Malbranque can bring to the table."
