When I think of concert films I tend to think of them as static. Even if the filmmaker is following a band on tour things tend to progress from one stage show to the next. If the music is great then it can be electrifying, but concert films still present a real challenge to a director. How can people playing music on stage carry an entire feature film? Some have found that magic formula, namely my favorites like Chris Blum's film of Tom Waits's 1988 American tour "Big Time", Laurie Anderson's groundbreaking "Home of the Brave" and that little piece of Toronto punk rock history "The Last Pogo" shot at the city's Horseshoe Tavern. I was lucky enough to recently add to my list of favorite concert films when I got a chance to see Tetsuaki Matsue's "Live Tape", the winner of the top prize in the Japanese Eyes program at this year's Tokyo International Film Festival. It's a film that blurs a lot of lines, bends the genre in whole new directions, but might be a bit of a slow build for a lot of audiences.

First off "Live Tape" is an amazing technical feat. Matsue shot the film on New Year's Day 2009, following singer/ songwriter Kenta Maeno as he walks through Tokyo's Musashino neighbourhood from Kichijoji Hachiman Shrine to Inokashira Park. All the way Maeno strums his guitar, belting out a full set of his songs, and Matsue captures his entire performance and journey in one single 74-minute take. Besides a cameo appearance by Tsugumi Nagasawa, star of such films as "Tokyo Gore Police" and "Zombie Hunter Rika", offering alms and prayers at Kichijoji Hachiman there are no other actors on screen, just Maeno front and center while the citizens of Tokyo come and go, for the most part passing him by as if her were just another part of the scenery. Maeno might not have a flashing neon sign over his head saying "Watch me!" but with his blazer, Rayban sunglasses and mop of curly hair looking more than a little like the patron saint of guitar troubadours Bob Dylan he definitely stands out. Add to that that the first song he performs "Summer at 18" has him confessing about how he masturbated to Yoshimitsu Morita's 1997 erotic hit film "Lost Paradise" for a dose of cheeky appeal, but even singing this at top volume the crowds just pass on by.

It was this disconnect that first struck me about "Live Tape". As Maeno slips through the crowds at the Shinto shrine and into the relative quiet of the holiday streets he sings about everyday life - how it's as boring as plain tofu ("Tofu"), how he's getting older and softer ("Fat on My Heart"), and about meeting with an old love ("100 Years from Now") - and all the while everyday life is going on around him, but Maeno seems like a ghost in the city, apart from the people and the buildings and there were times I caught myself watching the pedestrians more than Maeno and growing nostalgic about wanting to return to Japan after too many years of being away from it. Not necessarily the reaction that a director would want to get from the audience of their concert film.

The turning point for me those was when Matsue starts to question Maeno from behind the camera, asking him "what power level are you on right now?" and coaxing him to go from 80% power up to 120%. From this point on in "Live Tape" until the rousing last minutes Maeno does indeed increase his power, sometimes by bellowing out his lyrics of love, loss and alienation so that echo through the main covered shopping arcades of Musashino to a wonderful scene where Maeno crosses paths with the erhu (Chinese stringed instrument) player in his backing band The David Bowies to perform the title track of his 2007 debut CD "Romance Car". He follows that up with the emotional core of the film (at least in my opinion), the heart-tugging ballad "Can't Be Just Friends" where Maeno delivers such evocative lyrics as "The flowers are out/ And the stars are too/ I'm a black lump/ I wonder if I can paint with my guitar..."

Yes, "Live Tape" starts out as a document of a day, of a neighbourhood, and of everyday life in Japan. Years from now people may watch "Live Tape" partially for this very reason, but as Maeno and Matsue discuss their families and Matsue's desire to make something on New Year's Day after a very tough twelve months of loss and pain his film and Maeno's performance become a testament to the cathartic and joyful power of music. After Maeno teams up with The David Bowies behind him for the films high-powered climax at an outdoor concert my initial misgivings about "Live Tape" totally melted away. I can only hope that this film will make its way to North America so even more folks can go on this journey with Maeno and Matsue.

Since our inaugural year in 2009 so many great films have come out of Japan. Shinsedai Cinema Festival co-programmers Jasper Sharp (Midnight Eye) and Chris MaGee (Toronto J-Film Pow-Wow)have spent the past eight months watching as many of these films as humanly possible so that they can bring the best independent, and in many cases under-appreciated, Japanese films to movie audiences here in Toronto. From July 22nd to July 25th, 2010 the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will be hosting this celebration of Japanese film, and while Sharp and MaGee are still putting the finishing touches on the 2nd annual Shinsedai Cinema Festival line-up we are proud to announce the first block of films that audiences can expect this year at the JCCC.

Live Tape - The Toronto Premiere of Tetsuaki Matsue's award-winning concert documentary featuring indie singer-songwriter Kenta Maeno. Confessions of a Dog - A gritty police epic that exposes the corrupt underbelly of Japanese law enforcement, Gen Takahashi's Confessions of a Dog was too controversial to receive a theatrical release in Japan. The drama that stars Shun Sugata as a police detective who not only bends the rules but breaks them ended up having to be distributed through Hong Kong to festivals world wide. We are proud to premiere the film in Canada and to have Gen Takahashi as our guest.

Island of Dreams - First time feature director Tetsuichiro Tsuta goes against the trend of shooting on hi-def video with his film Island of Dreams, an homage to 1960s films of Akira Kurosawa, Seijun Suzuki and Kinji Fukasaku. Tsuta and his crew not only shot this eco-thriller on 16mm black-and-white film, but also developed and edited the film entirely by hand.

The Dark Harbour - A hilariously downbeat comedy with a heart, Naito Takatsugu's The Dark Harbour will be having its Canadian premiere at Shinsedai. The story of a lonely fisherman who discovers a single mother and her son hiding in his closet The Dark Harbour brings to mind the straight-faced comedy of Finnish master Aki Kaurismaki.

The Red Spot - Marie Miyayama's Japanese/ German co-produced debut feature is a touching drama about a young Japanese woman who travels to Bavaria to search for the exact spot where a car accident took the life of her parents and younger brother 18 years before. What she discovers in Germany is more than just a red spot on a map though.

Different Cities - Experimental video artist Kazuhiro Goshima uses subtle CGI-animation to clear Tokyo of all but a handful of its inhabitants in Different Cities. We follow five inter-weaving characters as they wake up to discover they've become lost in their own city.

Yuki Kawamura Trilogy - Musician, video artist, and now filmmaker Yuki Kawamura has crafted three touching Ozu-esque drama's about the impermamance of life and the magic that can be found in a single moment. Mixing traditional Japanese Noh theatre and modern hi-def technology these three films - Spark, Angel Robe and Grandmother - will be receiving their Toronto premiere at Shinsedai.

Ladybirds' Requiem - Artist and animator Akino Kondoh's first short film The Evening Traveling was a huge hit at Shinsedai last year, so this year we've not only programmed Kondoh's second animated short Ladybirds' Requiem, but we are featuring her 2004 painting Red Fishes as our official poster image. To top it all off Kondoh will be in attendance at this year's festival.

America's art-house theaters normally show an anemic sliver of what Asian cinema has to offer but the NYAFF's 2010 line-up is a brawny slab of 35 blockbusters and break-out hits that audiences in Thailand, China, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan actually buy tickets to watch.

THE STAR ASIA AWARDS

The NYAFF will be presenting three Star Asia Awards to actors Western audiences should know more about. The ceremony will take place on opening night, June 25, and the recipients will all be at the festival to receive their awards.

Rising Star of Asia Award to Huang Bo

One of China's most popular new actors, Huang Bo got his break in Ning Hao's 2006 comedy, CRAZY STONE, and he's gone on to specialize in earthy, foul-mouthed characters. A leading man with a character actor's face, he won a Golden Horse for his performance in COW, and we'll be screening it as part of the NYAFF 2010, as well as his movie CRAZY RACER.

Star Asia Award to Simon Yam

Starting as a character actor in the 1970's, Simon Yam has gone on to become one of Hong Kong's favorite leading men, winning "Best Actor" at the 2010 Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance in ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW, an official selection of this year's New York Asian Film Festival. From his performance as the insane fashion plate, Judge, in Ringo Lam's FULL CONTACT to his turn as the dapper pickpocket, Kei, in Johnnie To's SPARROW, Simon Yam has been one of the world's best, and most debonair, actors. In this year's festival, he appears in ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW, STORM WARRIORS and BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS.

Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award to Sammo Hung

A special Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award will go to the legendary actor and director, Sammo Hung, to honor his legacy of onscreen work. Jackie Chan's "older brother" at Master Yu Jim Yuen's Chinese Opera School, Sammo has worked as a producer, director, action-choreographer or stuntman in over 230 films. In this year's NYAFF, Sammo Hung choreographed the action in IP MAN, he co-stars in the festival's official opening night film, IP MAN 2, and he stars in the cracked action-cooking-comedy KUNG FU CHEFS. There will also be a special screening of his 1987 Vietnam War movie, EASTERN CONDORS, preceded by an onstage chat with the maestro about his career.

RETURN TO THE OLD SCHOOL: HONG KONG'S NEW MARTIAL ARTS CINEMA

After 2009's film, IP MAN, became a massive box office hit, savvy Hong Kong producers unleashed a wave of old school-inspired martial arts films that went back to basics: no CGI, no fancy wire work, no fakery. Instead, they were all about blazing hand-to-hand combat, hard-falling stuntmen and lightning fast kung fu. In conjunction with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, this year's NYAFF features a special focus on Hong Kong's new wave of old school kung fu.

This year's line-up will include Jackie Chan's latest movie, LITTLE BIG SOLDIER; we'll be screening GALLANTS, a rollicking action comedy starring a gallery of old school greats like Bruce Leung and Chen Kuan-tai; and two movies about Bruce Lee's teacher and Chinese folk hero, Ip Man: an encore presentation of the original IP MAN and the North American Premiere of IP MAN 2, our official Opening Night Film.

We'll also be screening the award-winning, 2009 Hong Kong blockbuster, BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS; the insane cooking kung fu flick, KUNG FU CHEFS; and the totally mad throwback to visually bonkers Hong Kong comic books of the 70's, THE STORM WARRIORS, and much more

UP FROM THE JAPANESE UNDERGROUND

Independent movies get a bad rap, but for the past two years some of the wildest Japanese films have been shot on video for about $1.95. Hip hop wannabes stranded in the middle-of-nowhere will be ripping up the screen in the award-winning 8000 MILES (about male rappers, dying on the vine) followed by a screening of the much-anticipated follow-up 8000 MILES 2 (about female rappers, languishing in obscurity). Director Yu Irie will be here for both screenings. We'll also be screening two films from director Tetsuaki Matsue, who will also be attending the festival. First up is his Japanese/Korean personal odyssey porno documentary, ANNYONG YUMIKA, that's a testament to the passions aroused by one Japanese skin flick actress working in Korea. Then we're screening LIVE TAPE, one of the most ambitious concert films ever made and winner of "Best Japanese Film" at the Tokyo International Film Festival, starring Kenta Maeno, known as Japan's Bob Dylan. Kenta Maeno is expected to attend the screenings.

We may be in a new location, but the NYAFF will still be as raw and potent as moonshine. Although we're on the Upper West Side, we're still showing movies that'll mess you up and ruin you permanently for the pale, lifeless junk Hollywood has to offer.

When I think of concert films I tend to think of them as static. Even if the filmmaker is following a band on tour things tend to progress from one stage show to the next. If the music is great then it can be electrifying, but concert films still present a real challenge to a director. How can people playing music on stage carry an entire feature film? Some have found that magic formula, namely my favorites like Chris Blum's film of Tom Waits's 1988 American tour "Big Time", Laurie Anderson's groundbreaking "Home of the Brave" and that little piece of Toronto punk rock history "The Last Pogo" shot at the city's Horseshoe Tavern. I was lucky enough to recently add to my list of favorite concert films when I got a chance to see Tetsuaki Matsue's "Live Tape", the winner of the top prize in the Japanese Eyes program at this year's Tokyo International Film Festival. It's a film that blurs a lot of lines, bends the genre in whole new directions, but might be a bit of a slow build for a lot of audiences.

First off "Live Tape" is an amazing technical feat. Matsue shot the film on New Year's Day 2009, following singer/ songwriter Kenta Maeno as he walks through Tokyo's Musashino neighbourhood from Kichijoji Hachiman Shrine to Inokashira Park. All the way Maeno strums his guitar, belting out a full set of his songs, and Matsue captures his entire performance and journey in one single 74-minute take. Besides a cameo appearance by Tsugumi Nagasawa, star of such films as "Tokyo Gore Police" and "Zombie Hunter Rika", offering alms and prayers at Kichijoji Hachiman there are no other actors on screen, just Maeno front and center while the citizens of Tokyo come and go, for the most part passing him by as if her were just another part of the scenery. Maeno might not have a flashing neon sign over his head saying "Watch me!" but with his blazer, Rayban sunglasses and mop of curly hair looking more than a little like the patron saint of guitar troubadours Bob Dylan he definitely stands out. Add to that that the first song he performs "Summer at 18" has him confessing about how he masturbated to Yoshimitsu Morita's 1997 erotic hit film "Lost Paradise" for a dose of cheeky appeal, but even singing this at top volume the crowds just pass on by.

It was this disconnect that first struck me about "Live Tape". As Maeno slips through the crowds at the Shinto shrine and into the relative quiet of the holiday streets he sings about everyday life - how it's as boring as plain tofu ("Tofu"), how he's getting older and softer ("Fat on My Heart"), and about meeting with an old love ("100 Years from Now") - and all the while everyday life is going on around him, but Maeno seems like a ghost in the city, apart from the people and the buildings and there were times I caught myself watching the pedestrians more than Maeno and growing nostalgic about wanting to return to Japan after too many years of being away from it. Not necessarily the reaction that a director would want to get from the audience of their concert film.

The turning point for me those was when Matsue starts to question Maeno from behind the camera, asking him "what power level are you on right now?" and coaxing him to go from 80% power up to 120%. From this point on in "Live Tape" until the rousing last minutes Maeno does indeed increase his power, sometimes by bellowing out his lyrics of love, loss and alienation so that echo through the main covered shopping arcades of Musashino to a wonderful scene where Maeno crosses paths with the erhu (Chinese stringed instrument) player in his backing band The David Bowies to perform the title track of his 2007 debut CD "Romance Car". He follows that up with the emotional core of the film (at least in my opinion), the heart-tugging ballad "Can't Be Just Friends" where Maeno delivers such evocative lyrics as "The flowers are out/ And the stars are too/ I'm a black lump/ I wonder if I can paint with my guitar..."

Yes, "Live Tape" starts out as a document of a day, of a neighbourhood, and of everyday life in Japan. Years from now people may watch "Live Tape" partially for this very reason, but as Maeno and Matsue discuss their families and Matsue's desire to make something on New Year's Day after a very tough twelve months of loss and pain his film and Maeno's performance become a testament to the cathartic and joyful power of music. After Maeno teams up with The David Bowies behind him for the films high-powered climax at an outdoor concert my initial misgivings about "Live Tape" totally melted away. I can only hope that this film will make its way to North America so even more folks can go on this journey with Maeno and Matsue.

El Festival de Música de Canarias se despide hoy en el Auditorio de Tenerife de su vigésimo sexta edición con la Orquesta Nacional Rusa como protagonista, dirigida por su fundador y director titular Mikhail Pletnev.

Las obras elegidas para despedir el ciclo de 2010 tienen como eje central a la música de Dimitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), seleccionando para la ocasión la Suite del ballet El Perno y su Novena Sinfonía, obra con la que se clausura el Festival. Además, la formación rusa y su director, acompañados al piano por Denis Matsuev, ejecutarán el Concierto para piano nº 2, de Rajmaninov, abriendo la velada la Obertura Rusa de Golovanov, informó el Gobierno canario en un comunicado de prensa.

Como director de orquesta, Golovanov se caracterizó por la interpretación de dos compositores malditos para el régimen comunista: Alexander Scriabin y Sergei Rajmaninov, en los que encontraba ese toque de misticismo con el que Golovanov gustaba de relacionar el fenómeno musical.

Golovanov logró ocupar varios cargos de confianza en las instituciones musicales de la Urss, por ejemplo en la Ópera del Bolshoi. Sin embargo, el músico fue expulsado por decisión expresa de Stalin tras empeñarse en mantener al cantante judío Mark Reizen al frente del reparto de Boris Godunov. No obstante, otras fuentes apuntan a que el despido tuvo causas más objetivas, entre ellas el fracaso en algunas producciones operísticas y sus modales autoritarios y hasta paranoicos en la dirección de orquesta.

Su música, entre ellas la Obertura Rusa, es fiel reflejo de su concepción de lo musical como una efusión de sonoridad y vehemencia, en la que está presente el toque nacionalista a través de una épica que, remotamente, recuerda a la Obertura 1812 de Chaikovski.

When it launched last year with an outstanding recording of Shostakovich's opera The Nose, the Mariinsky label seemed as if it was going to make available some genuinely important performances of the repertory that Valery Gergiev and his company have been exploring now for almost two decades – recordings of the Rimsky-Korsakov operas that were not included in Gergiev's series for Philips, perhaps, or Russian rarities such as Rubinstein's The Demon. What has been issued subsequently, though, has been far less adventurous, and this latest Rachmaninov disc is distinctly run of the mill. Denis Matsuev's piano playing is often admired, but always seems to me to be short on personality, and that lack of individuality is a serious flaw in both the Third Piano Concerto and the Paganini Rhapsody. The opening of the concerto is so lacking in presence, or in any sense of what is about to unfold, that attention begins to wander within seconds, and though Matsuev has all the technique he needs to muscle his way through the huge first-movement cadenza, the performances rarely come to life elsewhere.

Pletnev, que ofrecerá los conciertos de clausura de la 26 edición del Festival de Música de Canarias (el primero de los cuales será esta noche en el Auditorio Alfredo Kraus), ha agradecido también su participación en el mismo, pues ha considerado que se trata de un encuentro musical de grandes orquestas y músicos.

Un festival que además es seguido por público español y no turístico, lo cual le ha sorprendido gratamente, según ha manifestado en una rueda de prensa ofrecida en la capital grancanaria.

El director, pianista y compositor dirigirá a la Orquesta Nacional Rusa, formada por nuevas generaciones de músicos con "muy buenas garantías" y por intérpretes de más experiencia, y al pianista ha indicado Pletnev.

La orquesta interpretará en la primera parte del programa la "Sinfonía Nº 4", de Tanayev, considerada por su compositor como la primera por ser la más completa y cuyo adagio del segundo movimiento se interpretó en su entierro, en 1915, ha comentado Pletnev, quien además lo definió como "una gran figura" con la que se formaron Rachmaninov y de Prokofiev.

Éste último escribió en su diario que una vez coincidió con Tanayev en un tren de San Petesburgo a Moscú y que el rato que departió con él aprendió más que en todas las horas que estudió en el conservatorio, ha indicado Pletnev.

En la segunda parte del concierto, la orquesta interpretará la "Sinfonía Número 1", de Shostakovich, mientras que "La Obertura Rusa", de Golovanov, que en un principio figuraba para hoy, se ha trasladado a mañana para que el programa no resulte demasiado denso, según ha explicado el representante de la Orquesta Nacional Rusa, Carlos Crespo, quien ha añadido que ha motivado otros cambios en el orden de las piezas a interpretar.

Así, el programa del segundo concierto de mañana comenzará con "La Obertura Rusa"; continuará con el "Concierto para Piano y Orquesta Número 2", de Rachmaninov, que interpretará el pianista Denis Matsuev como solista; y seguirá en la segunda parte con la Suite para Ballet "El Perno" y la "Sinfonía Número 9", de Shostakovich.

Ambos programas se repetirán de nuevo los días 6 y 7 en el Auditorio de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, una sala conocida para Pletnev, pues ofreció un concierto de piano junto a la Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife en su inauguración en 2006.

El director del Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM), Félix Palomero, asistirá a la clausura del festival, según ha informado hoy su directora, Candelaria Rodríguez, quien ha subrayado que se trata de una presencia "significativa", ya que el Ministerio de Cultura formará parte de su futura fundación.

AnimEigo has released a new Region 1 DVD of Hideo Gosha's Onimasa - A Japanese Godfather (Kiryûin Hanako no shôgai). The English title of Gosha's film, which was released in 1982 by Toei Studios, is an obvious attempt to invoke a certain set of works by Francis Ford Coppola. Onimasa has virtually nothing in common with those Mafia masterpieces. In truth, the film is a bloody epic drama that laces its story of an early 20th century Yakuza leader with a heavy dose of contemporary sleaze.

Tatsuya Nakadai plays Masagoro Kiryuin (aka Onimasa), who is the egotistical head of a small-time Yakuza gang. Onimasa's chivalrous self-image is contradicted by his criminal activities, and his desire to sleep with most any woman who isn't his wife (Shima Iwashita). One fateful day, Onimasa pays a visit to the Shirai home in order to adopt some children. He picks Hiraku and his sister Matsue (played by Nobuko Sendô as a girl and Masako Natsume as an adult). The boy eventually runs away, but Matsue stays in Onimasa's house. She is put in charge of "tending" him, and bears witness to the turmoil of the Kiryuin house, including disease, revenge, death, and Onimasa's increasingly weird behavior.

The film's sprawling multi-decade plot features scads of characters and branches off in numerous directions. The story is told from the parallel perspectives of Onimasa and Matsue. Onimasa is crazy, deluded, and somewhat good natured. Matsue is smart and independent, but unable to escape Onimasa's emotional and physical grip. This creates a tension is presented between Onimasa's pretense of chivalry and his efforts to stifle Matsue's attempts to expand beyond life in the Yakuza family. Although the film focuses on the lives of these two characters, there is no doubt that Tatsuya Nakadai is the lead. He delivers a swaggering performance that occasionally slips into histrionics. His mugging, posturing, and yelling do match the character fairly well. In comparison, Masako Natsume gives an even and reserved performance that gets across the tragic nature of her character.

Stylistically, Onimasa: A Japanese Godfather is all over the map. The film's meshing of contemporary elements with a period setting is oddly compelling. The opening scene shows men in color-coordinated Yakuza gowns pulling Onimasa's rickshaw. Instead of classical Japanese music, the scene is set to a disco number with swirling strings. A Morricone-style score (complete with a woeful harmonica motif) solidifies the impression that Onimasa isn't shooting for complete fidelity to the time period in which it is set.

The film also has an exploitation undercurrent with plenty of sex and violence. This adds a bit of spice, but occasionally undermines the film's serious tone. The most egregious example involves a feud between Onimasa and another Yakuza boss (played by Ryohei Uchida). The feud arises from a dog fight. The fight in question is real and is presented on screen. Dogs are shown biting and mauling each other with blood splattering all over the ground. The scene is absolutely essential to the plot, and organized dog fighting is a long-standing activity in some parts of Japan. However, showing dogs hurting each other adds nothing to the story.

Audio and visual options on AnimEigo's DVD are plentiful. This anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Original and restored Japanese language Dolby Digital 2.0 audio tracks are included. Thee original track contains an analog hiss that is not present in the restored audio.

Viewers can choose between yellow or white English subtitles. AnimEigo continues its practice of using different colored subtitles to help viewers differentiate the dialogue. Explanatory annotations, which are optional and appear in the black matting at the top of the screen, are also provided. Program notes, biographies, an image gallery, and multiple trailers for Onimasa and two other Hideo Gosha films (The Wolves and The Geisha) round out the extras.
