Given the events which came to a head yesterday between San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree and TE Vernon Davis, could you see a scenario which would prompt the San Francisco 49ers to trade Michael Crabtree to the San Diego Chargers for WR Vincent Jackson? Good morning, Washington. Now comes the aftermath, as we all sift through the heap of information coming to light In the wake of yesterday's hostage situation at the Discovery Communications building. Police remain on the scene this morning; authorities had to disrupt four devices overnight which they found on the premises.

James J. Lee was obviously an individual who had some very skewed ideas about humanity, the media and society-at-large. We know that he was enamored with the works of Daniel Quinn, so much to the point that he paid people to sit down with him at a local bookstore and talk with him about Quinn's work. He was also a real person: someone who had a family, though even his brother-in-law described him as having "a very unstable and disagreeable personality." The national media appears to be focusing in on the immigration aspects of Lee's manifesto, but it's important to note that Lee's earlier ramblings were much more focused on the programming than such topics.

There hasn't been a lot of information from the three individuals who were held hostage -- understandable, considering the circumstances. The first hostage to come forward, Jim McNulty, who works at Discovery-owned channel TLC, released a statement late last night which thanked law enforcement officers, Discovery and his friends and family for their support. But McNulty refused to go into further detail because the investigation was still ongoing. The two other hostages were another Discovery staffer and a security guard at the office building.

What is clear: there is no question that the law enforcement officers who were working the scene yesterday responded with the utmost professionalism. (Especially considering how fragile Lee

">claimed his explosive devices were.) In an era when information is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to control, the authorities in Silver Spring did nothing less than a fantastic job. There were a lot of combustible elements swirling yesterday -- explosives, children in a day care center, a nearby school which just started back up, the building's proximity to the Silver Spring Metro station and one of the area's busiest traffic spots, lots of people who were out and about for lunch breaks -- and the fact that the authorities were able to maintain control and keep everything running and all the hostages safe is an amazing thing.

Washington Post Council Endorsements Are...Interesting: The Post released its endorsements for the four competitive D.C. Council primaries last night. The paper made the interesting move of endorsing no one in the At-Large race, citing disappointment with all three candidates -- the editorial claims that Phil Mendelson has coasted as simply "the better of a bad choice" for years; that Clark Ray has failed to make "a good case for his candidacy"; and that the Michael D. Brown's name confusion doesn't lend him much credibility. The paper also shockingly endorsed Delano Hunter, who is among three challengers vying for the Ward 5 seat currently held by Harry Thomas, Jr. The Post dubbed Thomas a "major disappointment," and called both Hunter and Kenyan McDuffie better options. But the editorial board chose Hunter, noting that "he is not the homophobe his critics make him out to be," despite his connections to the National Organization for Marriage. The Post's claim that Hunter would not change the District's equal marriage law, but believes in "a way to provide equality for gays while respecting the beliefs of religious groups," is flummoxing, to say the least. In less surprising news, the paper also endorsed Jim Graham (Ward 1) and Tommy Wells (Ward 6) for reelection.

Dozens of Candidates For Metro's Top Job: Ann Scott Tyson reports this morning that WMATA's search for a permanent general manager has identified dozens of serious candidates. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, considering that most observers and members of the board assumed that interest in the job would be tempered by the position's sizable demands and the number of safety and fiscal issues the transit system is currently facing. Current interim General Manager Richard Sarles' one-year contract expires next April.

This Day in DCist: Last year, Bishop Harry Jackson claimed to have moved again, and we raked the Redskins over the coals for their ticketing procedures.

I could live with that. Michael Silver writes an interesting article on why and how he thinks this should be done. I find the most interesting part to be where Silver suggests that the Vikings should offer Jackson a one year deal at around $6 million (You know, about what the guy's worth). I find this interesting, obviously, because I've been saying for months now that this is what the Chargers should have done. Up until this point I've heard maybe one other paid sports professional bring this up. Of course, with Kevin Acee's recent assertion that the Chargers were never intent upon bringing Jackson back at all, I suppose this is all moot. By the way, Acee, do you think our venerable GM might have graciously allowed Jackson-a Pro Bowl WR with back to back 1,000 yard seasons!-to suit up with the team this year if he had signed their original piddling tender? Of course not! He was already out the door! Worst sports writers in the nation here in San Diego.

Michael Silver from Yahoo! Sports wrote an interesting article today about why the Vikings should do everything in their power to trade for Vincent Jackson immediately. He makes a lot of valid points, his main one being that if you're going to bend over backwards for Brett Favre and push in all the chips for 2010 you can't leave Brett hanging with an injured Sidney Rice (out for at least half of the season) and Percy Harvin (who probably shouldn't be near a football field with his constant migraines).

What's mentioned in the article is that whatever team trades for Vincent Jackson will first want a long-term deal worked out to make sure that they're not giving up something valuable (like a high draft pick) for a rental that wouldn't even play 16 games for them. What isn't mentioned is that 2010 is also the last year of Sidney Rice's contract, and there's no team in the league that can really afford hanging out two deals for #1 WR money if they expect to keep any of their other star players.

Basically, if the Vikings were to get Jackson they would have to give up a high draft pick, give him a ton of money (Trusting that his off-the-field issues are behind him...remember the Vikings love boat scandal? They're still trying to get away from that) and probably say goodbye to Sidney Rice. That last part is especially important when considering long-term contracts, with Sidney Rice having a better 2009 season than VJax and being 3 years younger than him he would seem to be the safer long-term investment.

Granted, Silver's suggestion to Minnesota is to offer Jackson a one-year deal for $6 million dollars and figure out the long-term deal later on, but the problem will still be there during and after the 2010 season.

So, should the Vikings give up on their long-term plans and once again go "all in" on winning the Super Bowl in 2010 with Favre and Jackson? Every GM in the league would tell you that's the quickest way to get yourself fired, but a lot of owners around the league are willing to take the risk to get the Lombardi Trophy in the lobby of team headquarters. 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, quoted in The Sporting News after team captain Vernon Davis and second-year WR Michael Crabtree engaged in a shouting match during practice on Wednesday: "I appreciate Vernon speaking from his heart, but it was just wrong. He's not going to sugarcoat things — he doesn't know how to sugarcoat things — I wish he did sometimes. I appreciate what he was trying to do, but it was wrong." Added Singletary: "We didn't get better on the field in practice, but we got better as a team. There are no elephants in the room. The elephant was exposed."

Vikings backup QB Tarvaris Jackson believes it's time for him to be a starter, as quoted in the St. Cloud Times: "I chose to play football for a living, so it is what it is. Of course I'd like to get more reps. I still get better by watching, but it's not the same. I feel like it's time. I'm not getting any younger."

Colts C Jeff Saturday, quoted in The Indianapolis Star explaining that he is just not ready to make any guarantees that he will be in the starting lineup Week One after having his knee scoped a little more than a month ago: "Obviously my goal is going to be Week One. That's always been the goal. But I'm definitely not in a position that I can say that's for sure. I'm working toward it.'' Added Saturday: "Yeah, you're working back. Just getting in my football position, moving around. Moving to the speed of the game is a big difference.''

Dolphins OG Richie Incognito, discussing teammate Jake Long's leadership abilities, as quoted on MiamiHerald.com: ''Jake's just a heck of a player. He puts every ounce of his heart into what he does. You can really get behind a guy like that. … It's easy for him to assume that natural leadership role.''

Bears QB Jay Cutler isn't worried about the preseason struggles of the first-team offense, as quoted by The Associated Press: "Is there a reason for concern? Maybe, maybe not. I'm not concerned. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, explaining that the emergence of rookie CB Walter Thurmond allowed the club to trade CB Josh Wilson to the Ravens for a conditional 2011 draft pick, as quoted on seattlepi.com: "Walter has had a great camp. He's played beautifully for us, he's played probably more than anybody else. So we've got a great look at him and we're real excited about his contribution." Added Carroll: "Walter is an all-around football player. He runs and hits like a safety. He's shown the speed and agility and attitude and mentality. He hasn't backed off anything. We've seen him against a lot of guys in a lot of situations already and he's really on the come. … We like what he's bringing."

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, quoted in The Detroit News discussing the slow recovery of RB Kevin Smith from ACL surgery: "He's got to get to the point where the knee is not even on his agenda anymore. He's got to get to the point where he doesn't think about it when he's out there. And that's a long process. That's not an overnight thing." Added Schwartz: "We know Kevin is a very, very smart football player, and he's going to do the right things. We have a lot of trust in him as far as that. It's not so much earning our trust. Colts QB Peyton Manning continues to worry about how the new NFL rule regarding umpire placement affects his ability to run the no-huddle offense, as quoted in The Indianapolis Star: "I've talked to some other quarterbacks and they said they've had similar frustrations with it. The challenge situation is very real when you try to hurry it up to avoid the coach getting a great look at it. Let's just give them an HD, slow-motion look now if we have to take that much time." Added Manning: "Twelve men on the field … what about that guy getting off the field? Do you just sit there and watch him go off the field? Do you turn back (to the umpire) and check and say, 'Hey, are you ready?' If that's what we have to do, that's what we have to do."

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, quoted on Ravens Insider discussing the competition battle at the placekicker position between veterans Shayne Graham and Billy Cundiff: "The kicker situation is really tough, and tough in a really good way. They've both done really well. They'll be outstanding NFL kickers this year, without question. It's just a matter of which guy we feel like best fits us when the time comes, and honestly, we don't know that right now. So, we probably put that thing off, and we'll probably continue to put it off until the very last minute, and then we'll have to make a decision."

Cardinals QB Matt Leinart is upset about what he feels has been an unequal opportunity from coach Ken Whisenhunt to win the starting job this summer, as quoted in the Sporting News: "I feel like I've outplayed the competition, training camp, preseason. I think my play speaks about that. For me, this goes beyond the football field." Added Leinart, when asked if he has spoken with Whisenhunt about the situation: "No, it is what it is. Like I said, I think I've done enough. I need to get better, like I said last week. But I don't know if there have been equal opportunities. Obviously, I haven't played as much as I'd like."

Panthers WR Steve Smith, quoted in The (Rock Hill, S.C.) Herald regarding his rehab from a broken left arm: "Have not diverted from the path at hand, which is Week 1 in New York. And that's been the focal point, and that's kind of where it's going to start." Smith's arm is healed and his conditioning is getting better, as well: "This Monday, cardio-wise is a lot better than last Monday, significantly," he said. "That's a relief mentally for me. That's a little bit more reps I can go before coming out cardio-wise, so that was good. Last week I was hurting, my lungs were hurting, chest was burning. It was like the last thousand meters (of a marathon)."

Former Patriots safety and current NBC analyst Rodney Harrison, explaining that his former team is sick and tired of hearing the New York Jets say the AFC East is their division to win, as quoted by The Associated Press: "You better believe the Patriots have that (game) circled with the Jets. They hate the Jets, but they hate them even more because they've been coming out saying, 'This is our division.' " Harrison continued, saying head coach Rex Ryan has only added more fuel to the fire: "It's one thing if a player trash-talks. But if a coach starts trash-talking, guess what? Jake Muyco relieved Jackson and while he didn't pitch that well, allowing four runs over 3.1 innings, he did eat up some innings and go 2 for 2 at the plate. (I can't believe I'm mentioning a relief pitcher because of what he did at the plate.)

Justin Berg got the win in relief by getting the final two outs of the eighth inning. One of his outs was a strikeout.

Jeff Stevens pitched the ninth inning and got his ninth save. He allowed only one single. He struck out one Isotope.

The ninth inning comeback was keyed by a pair of two-run home runs. The first was by left fielder Jason Dubois. It was actually Dubois' second three-run home run of the game, as he had earlier hit one in the seventh inning. Dubois was 3 for 6 with six RBI. He has 18 homers this season and 86 in his Iowa career.  The Iowa record is 90.

The killing blow was launched by third baseman Marquez Smith, whose line-drive home run in the ninth gave the I-Cubs the lead.  It was Smith's 17th home run this year for Iowa. Smith went 2 for 5 with a walk. He had four total RBI and he crossed the plate three times.

Right fielder Brad Snyder had two doubles in a 2 for 6 effort. Snyder scored once and batted one in. First baseman Bryan LaHair was 2 for 6 with a run scored.

Catcher Chris Robinson was 2 for 5 with a double. He also stole his first base of the season. Robinson scored once and had one RBI.

Center fielder Sam Fuld was 1 for 3 with three walks. Fuld scored three times, including the go-ahead run on Smith's home run, and had one RBI. Fuld stole one base.  He was so good, I'm not even going to mention that he made his first error of the season. But if I did, I'd say that making your first error of the season on September 1st is pretty impressive.

It was a huge win as Memphis also won, meaning the I-Cubs keep their one game lead in the American North division of the Pacific Coast League. The two teams play five more games, including four against each other in Des Moines. As far as I can tell, Memphis holds the tiebreaker between the two teams, so keeping the one game lead is huge going into the final four game series.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies blotted out the Jacksonville Suns, 9-4. (Or maybe it was the rain, as this game had a 1:02 rain delay)

Jeremy Papelbon started and pitched four innings before the rain came. He allowed three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Aaron Shafer got the win in relief. Shafer pitched two innings and the only baserunner he allowed was by an error. He erased him in a double play. Shafer struck out two.

Center fielder Brett Jackson hit a three run home run in the fourth inning. It was his sixth for Tennessee and 12th overall.

Left fielder Brandon Guyer was 3 for 5 with a double and a run scored. First baseman Blake Lalli was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.

Catcher Mark Reed was promoted from Daytona and he was 2 for 3 with two walks. Reed scored once and had two RBI.

Daytona Cubs

The Daytona Cubs swept a double-header from the Clearwater Threshers, 2-0 and 5-2.

The first game was all Alberto Cabrera. Cabrera threw a seven-inning shutout, allowing only five hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out six.

Center fielder Evan Crawford was 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored. Catcher Mario Mercedes was 2 for 3. DH Michael Brenly went 2 for 3 with a double.

The second game was started by Dae-Eun Rhee, who lasted 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Chris Siegfried got the win with 2.1 innings of relief. Siegfried did not allow a run and gave up two hits.  Siegfried did not walk anyone and struck out three.

Alex Maestri got his first save. He pitched 1.1 innings and gave up one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out one.

First baseman Jake Opitz was 1 for 2 with a triple and a walk. He scored twice.

Tampa lost, so Daytona picked up 1.5 games on the Yankees. They now trail Tampa by two with four games to play.

Peoria Chiefs

The Peoria Chiefs were shut out by the Kane County Cougars, 7-0.

Carlos Silva made a rehab start tonight and it didn't go too well. Silva was sharp for the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. Silva went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Silva walked two and struck out four.

DH Nelson Perez was 2 for 3.

The loss puts the Chiefs' backs up against the wall, as a loss to Kane County in either of the next two games will eliminate them from the playoff hunt.

Boise Hawks

The Boise Hawks banged out 18 hits as they downed the Spokane Indians, 11-2.

Cameron Greathouse pitched six shutout innings to get the win. Greathouse allowed only three hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out five.

Third baseman Dustin Harrington was a perfect 5 for 5 tonight with a double and a triple. Harrington had one RBI and scored three times.

Second baseman Pierre LePage was 3 for 5 with two doubles. He scored twice and had two RBI. Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara was 3 for 6. He scored once and had three RBI.

Left fielder Cody Shields had two doubles in a 2 for 5 night. Shields scored once and had one RBI. DH Pin-Chieh Chen went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

AFC East

1. New England: Tom Brady regains '07 form, puts team on back and carries it to AFC East title.

2. N.Y. Jets: Clearly they're loaded, but I think Sanchez's inconsistency and poor team chemistry will lead to early playoff exit.

3. Miami: Chad Henne will flourish with a true No. 1 wideout, defense will benefit from Nolan's tutelage, but AFC East too tough for Fins.

4. Buffalo: Spiller is going to be fun to watch, with or without an offensive line.

AFC North

1. Baltimore: Boldin, Rice, Flacco make offense the main attraction. "D" still has plenty of tread on the tires.

2. Cincinnati: Somehow they'll manage to stay out of trouble and make it to the postseason (crazy, I know).

3. Pittsburgh: Hard to imagine the Steelers being fragile, but that's exactly what they are.

4. Cleveland: Not enough playmakers for Delhomme. How long until Holmgren is calling plays?

AFC South

1. Indianapolis: Manning and Co. avenge Super Bowl loss to Saints by hoisting Lombardi Trophy in Dallas.

2. Houston: Not sold on their ground game or their ability to win meaningful games within division.

3. Tennessee: How will Chris Johnson top 2009? Even 2,500 yards won't make up for glaring issues on other side of ball.

4. Jacksonville: I like the direction they're headed, but Garrard isn't the guy. More help is needed on D-line and in secondary.

AFC West

1. San Diego: Even with all the turnover and holdouts, the talented Bolts are still the cream of the crop in unimpressive AFC West.

2. Denver: No team has had worse luck with injuries this offseason. I wonder if McDaniels believes in karma?

3. Kansas City: The Chiefs' arrow is pointing up. They'll have one of the better ground games in the league, but I think they're still a year away.

4. Oakland: Trading for Jason Campbell was a great move, but I'm not convinced the defense can suddenly stop anyone, particularly teams with a good rushing attack.

NFC East

1. Dallas: Might be the best team on paper, but I see them succumbing to the pressure of being the first team to host and play in the same Super Bowl. 

2. N.Y. Giants: The defense will prove '09 was an aberration, and offense will reinvent itself and grab a wild-card berth.

3. Washington: McNabb and Shanahan are a perfect marriage, but will McNabb stay healthy and is he surrounded by enough playmakers? Not likely.

4. Philadelphia: Newcomer Kevin Kolb has an abundance of weapons, but I think he will try to do too much this season.

NFC North

1. Minnesota: Brett Favre just needs not to lose games and this team will be Super Bowl-bound. Both lines are dominant, and Adrian Peterson is poised for MVP-caliber season.

2. Green Bay: Rodgers will guide Pack back to playoffs, but I don't think the "D" will be as effective without Jolly, injuries to the secondary.

3. Chicago: The Bears should have thrown some of that money toward improving the offensive line and secondary. I can't see this team being better than .500.

4. Detroit: The Lions suddenly have a ton of firepower on both sides of the ball. At least a year away in a tough division, though.

NFC South

1. Atlanta: A healthy Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and improved defense bring division title back to Hotlanta. 

2. New Orleans: Super Bowl hangover strikes, particularly on defense, causing Saints to narrowly miss out on postseason. 

3. Carolina: They can still be one of the better running teams in football. I just think the loss of DE Julius Peppers and LB Thomas Davis will be too much to overcome.

4. Tampa Bay: I don't see the Buccaneers showing much improvement in Year Two of rebuilding. Quite frankly, there just isn't much to work with.

NFC West

1. San Francisco: Solid rushing attack and a stout "D." Alex Smith also has several weapons to work with, should he decide he is ever going to take the next step.

2. Arizona: It will take a heck of a coaching job from Ken Whisenhunt to cover up the shortcomings of Matt Leinart/Derek Anderson and a new cast of characters on defense.

3. Seattle: They sure gave up a lot for a guy who has accomplished nothing at this level (Charlie Whitehurst). Will Matt Hasselbeck survive the season?

4. St. Louis: I hope Steven Jackson can stay healthy, for Sam Bradford's sake.

 

Offensive MVP: Peyton Manning, Indianapolis

Defensive MVP: DeMarcus Ware, Dallas

Super Bowl XLV: Indianapolis over Minnesota

The dreaded “running back by committee” has left the number of viable #1 fantasy running backs few and far between. 

There are only a few clear cut No. one, non-time share, top-tier running backs: Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, Maurice Jones-Drew, Michael Turner, Steven Jackson and Frank Gore.

PPR or non-PPR, most people would anoint Chris Johnson the No. one running back this year.  Even if he is only half as good as last year, we are looking at 1,250 total yards and eight TD—that alone would make him a good No. two on your team.

Much has been written about the year after a 2,000-yard season. Eric Dickerson, Jamal Lewis, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis and OJ Simpson all had significant declines the following season. 

The most similar to Johnson in that group were probably Sanders and Simpson: both of them made their living with moves as opposed to power.

In addition, all the other running backs, aside from Eric Dickerson, ran for 2,000 yards in their fourth year or later. That’s a few more years of pounding than Johnson has received.

It’s possible that Chris Johnson had his career year during his second season, but do you really want to risk the chance that this is just the beginning?

Like we did with the Receivers, let’s examine the No. two Running back.  There is one distinct difference in assessing the No. one running back: is it a PPR or non-PPR league? This distinction can really change the balance of power.
