Detroit is my hometown. I grew up here during the 50s and 60s, lived in a neat and homogeneous white, largely Jewish, neighborhood in Northwest Detroit, and walked to the tiny Arthur H. Vandenberg Elementary School every day from kindergarten through eighth grade, coming home for lunch at noon. My world changed when I (along with four 8th grade boys) was invited to attend Cass Technical High School downtown, near Tiger Stadium. Dating back to 1904, Cass Tech in the 60s was a huge place, occupying an entire city block; nine floors high; drawing about 4,000 students from all over the city, who majored in any number of subjects—from science and arts (like me) to design and drafting, chemistry, music, performing arts, and electrical engineering.

My inclination was to opt out of the offer. The prospect of being the only girl in the group (and being labeled "smart" to boot) was not appealing. In fact, it was frightening. But in this case, my mother really 'knew best." She insisted that I give Cass a try, and taking that opportunity changed my life. The world I entered was diverse in every way and full of intellectual and social challenges. My teachers and peers stretched my mind, piqued my curiosity for learning, and set the academic bar high. I was a cub reporter on the Cass Technician, the school rag, interviewed visiting luminaries like Charlton Heston and homegrown talent like The Supremes (Diana Ross went to Cass), and I eventually became editor-in-chief. As a fine arts minor, I made jewelry, tried watercolor and calligraphy, and took my first art history course.

Have you ever wanted to connect your phone or mobile device to a Wi-Fi network at home or your favorite coffee shop but aren’t sure how? Today we’ll take a look at how to connect to Wi-Fi on an iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android devices.

iPhone / iPod Touch

Note: We are using version 4.0 of the iPhone OS

Find and select the Settings icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Select Wi-Fi from the Settings menu.

If your Wi-Fi setting currently set to Off, tap it to toggle On the Wi-Fi access.

 

Once your Wi-Fi is enabled you should see available networks appear below. Encrypted networks will show a padlock to the right of the name while “open” networks will not. Tap to select the network to join.

If you choose a network that requires a password, you’ll be prompted to enter it. Type in your password and select Join.

 

When connected, your network SSID will be indicated in blue with a check mark beside it.

To connect to a network with a hidden SSID, select Other.

You’ll need to know the SSID, Security type, and password. Enter that information and select Join.

  

Now you can browse to all your favorite websites and connect to other devices on your Wi-Fi network.

Android

Note: We are using Android 2.1 for our examples.

On your Android device, select the Settings icon.

 

Under Settings, choose Wireless & networks.

Next, select Wi-Fi settings.

If Wi-Fi is not already turned on, tap the check mark by Wi-Fi to turn it on. When Wi-Fi is enabled, available SSID’s will appear below. Encrypted networks will by indicated with a padlock icon. Select the network to which you’d like to connect.

If password protected, type in your password and select Connect.

You should now see that you are connected to the network.

To connect to a Wi-Fi network with a hidden SSID, select Add Wi-Fi network from the settings.

Then manually type in your SSID and password, and select your network security type. Select Save when finished.

 

Now you can browse the web through your Wi-Fi router or connect to other network devices.

 

Conclusion

Whether you want to connect to Wi-Fi to communicate to other devices or just save on your phone’s data usage, it’s pretty easy to do on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android phone.

Live in or near Provo, UT, and want to test your project skills in an online competition? TheTransistor hackerspace is competing in a hackerspace build-off, and is looking for a few good makers to help with an upcoming mystery project. The competition is open to the public:

Full details have not been release yet; but this will be open to the public (as long as you fill out the release form). Here are the details so far:

• 5 Hackerspaces will compete in a professionally recorded web-only event.
• theTransistor has already been selected as one of these groups.
• The build-off should start the first week of August, the exact dates are still unknown.
• The build-off will last 2-3 Weeks.
• Participants won't be required to be there every day.
• The build-off will revolve around a task that will be announced on day 1 to all participants.
• Each space will be given a budget to complete the task.
• As far as I know there are no prizes / etc for 'winning'. This will be more about learning and doing.
• Participants will not be required to be a member of the hackerspace or pay any entry fees to help.
• Participants appearing on camera will need to sign a basic agreement with the producing company. ( Very basic: you aren't allowed to talk about the results / etc. until after it 'airs', they aren't responsibly if you blow up / melt / etc.)
• You DON'T need any special skills as I understand it; this should be about the community. Anyone who would like to can participate.

If this interests you please stop by this weekend (2010.07.31, 6:00pm)

Would you like to move your notes from OneNote 2010 into Evernote?  There’s no official way to import OneNote 2010 notes into Evernote, but here’s a solution that can help you get most of your notes transferred.

If you’ve been using OneNote 2010 and tried to import your notebooks into Evernote, you may have been disappointed and frustrated to be informed that Evernote only imports from OneNote 2007.  Even if you’ve converted your notebooks into OneNote 2007 format, you cannot import OneNote notes into Evernote 3.5 without having OneNote 2007 installed.  The Evernote team has mentioned on their support forum that they’re working on adding OneNote 2010 import, but for now, here’s a workaround to get OneNote 2010 notes into Evernote.

There are 2 great ways to import your OneNote 2010 data into Evernote.  First, you can just directly copy the content of your notebook sections, and then paste it directly into Evernote.  You’ll maintain most of your OneNote content and formatting this way, and can still edit and add to the notes.  Or, you can export whole notebooks as PDF, and then add the PDF files to Evernote.  This works good too, but you won’t be able to edit the notes in Evernote.  Let’s look at both options.

Copy OneNote 2010 Sections Into Evernote

Thankfully, copy and paste from OneNote into Evernote works great.  You can select everything on your note by pressing Ctrl+A, and then copy it and paste it into Evernote.  Here’s our notebook in OneNote:

Create a new note in Evernote, and paste the content from OneNote in it.

Here it is after we pasted it into Evernote.  It looks almost the same, but it didn’t copy the title correctly so you may want to copy that separately.  While you’re importing it into Evernote anyhow, you should add tags too so you can easily find your content.

Copying and pasting your data from each note could take forever if you have lots of notes, so instead you could copy a whole section at a time.  To do this, select all of your pages on the right side, right-click, and select Copy.  You can select all of the pages by selecting the first page, then holding the shift key down and selecting the last one.

Now, once again, paste it into a new note in Evernote.  This time, your note will be rather long, as it will contain all of the content from all the pages in that section.  It may take a minute for Evernote to display all of the data, but it should paste in with almost the same formatting as your OneNote Notebook had.  This is a much quicker way to get your OneNote data into Evernote, but still it may take a while if you have many Notebook sections.

Convert OneNote 2010 Notebooks to PDF

If you have lots of notebook sections in OneNote, it may be too difficult or time consuming to copy and paste them all into Evernote.  If so, the quickest way to import the notes into Evernote would be to export your notebooks as PDF.  This would let you get all the sections and pages from that notebook into Evernote directly, but you won’t be able to edit or add to the notes in Evernote.  Additionally, if you’re not a premium subscriber, you may not be able to search inside the PDFs as well.

To convert a notebook to PDF, right-click on the notebook in the left side of OneNote and select Save As.

Select PDF in the available file types, and make sure to select Current Notebook in the page range.

The conversion may take a few moments, depending on how many sections and pages you had in the notebook.

Once it’s finished, right-click the PDF in Explorer and select Send to Evernote.  Alternately you can copy and paste the PDF file into a new or existing Evernote note.

Do note that PDF files can be large.  One of our notebooks had over 150 pages with several images in most pages, and the final PDF was around 5Mb.  Free Evernote accounts can only upload 40Mb of data per month, so make sure you have enough upload space to add your notes all at once.

Once your PDF is in Evernote, you can browse thorough the pages directly in Evernote or double-click on the document to open it in your default PDF reader.  Note that each individual page from OneNote will be at least one page in your PDF, depending on how long your notes were.

Conclusion

Although Evernote doesn’t currently support importing notes from OneNote 2010, it’s still not too difficult to get your notes imported.  Even if you prefer OneNote, this could be a way you could take your notes on your mobile device, as Evernote supports far more devices than OneNote.  We’ll be watching out for an Evernote update that adds support for OneNote 2010, and if one comes, we’ll be sure to let you know!

Swimming pools have always been expensive, and during the Great Recession, building a new one may seem like a distant dream.

The desire to refresh your body outdoors in water is still a possibility. Think vertical, not horizontal. And in a tighter space. How so? By installing an outdoor shower. Forget the built-in shower stall, the vinyl duck-print shower curtain, with matching curtain rings and all those other accessories.

In a secluded spot in your yard, install a showerhead on a wall and get cool and clean under the sun or stars. Sounds like an easy project with great potential for relaxation and enjoyment. Find out more in this article from The Chronicle Herald.

Safari 5 is one of the least used browsers on Windows, but would you be likely to use it more with more features?  The latest update to Safari made it incredibly simple to install extensions, so let’s take a quick look at what it has to offer.

Getting the Latest Version of Safari

Several weeks ago we looked at how to install extensions in the new Safari 5, but it required a rather complicated process to get everything working.  Now Apple has updated Safari and made it very simple to install extensions from their official Extension Gallery.  First, though, you’ll need to make sure you have Safari 5.0.1 or later installed.  If you’ve already installed Safari or other Apple programs, open the Apple Software Update tool to get the latest version of Safari.

This will offer you the latest version of Safari, or offer to install it if you don’t already have Safari installed.  Select the update or installation, and click Install. Be sure to uncheck the other updates they offer that might be needless on your system.

Alternately, download Safari from the link below, and install as normal.  Thankfully, the installer doesn’t try to install Bonjour this time, so you won’t have to worry about extra stuff getting installed.

Find and Install Extensions

Once the latest version of Safari is up and running, you can quickly get started finding and installing extensions.  Click the Gear icon in the far right of the toolbar, and select Safari Extensions Gallery.

This will open the Safari Extensions Gallery webpage, where you can browse and preview available extensions that have been approved by Apple and digitally signed.  When you find an extension you’d like to install, click the Install Now button below the description.

Seconds later, the button will change to show that your extension is now installed.  That’s all there is to it; your extension is now running with only one click!

Safari Extensions can add lots of functionality to the browser.  They can add more to the browser than Chrome extensions can, but still are less powerful overall than Firefox addons.  Here’s some interesting features we added with some of the available extensions.

Interesting Extensions

The Bing Highlights extension lets you quickly search the web or look up a map by just selecting text on a page.

Twitter for Safari adds a toolbar that shows related Tweeters from a webpage, which is a great way to discover and keep up with the author and other people mentioned in an article.

It also lets you search Twitter directly from a sidebar in Safari.

We were excited to see the Awesome Screenshot extension for Safari, and it works almost identical to Awesome Screenshot for Chrome.  The only feature it was missing was the ability to capture all of a page; hopefully this will be added soon.

Finally, if you’ve been using Chrome for a while, you may be frustrated by the status toolbar taking up space on the bottom of your browser all the time.  The Ultimate Status Bar extension fixes this with a Chrome-style preview version of the status bar that even expands short URLs so you can see where a click will take you.

Remove Extensions

If you’ve installed an extension but don’t find it helpful, you can quickly remove it from Safari.  Click the gear icon on the right of the toolbar, and select Preferences in the menu.

Click Extensions on the top of the Preferences window.  Here you can change settings for your extensions, or click Uninstall to remove an extension.

Click Uninstall to confirm you wish to uninstall this extension.

Alternately, if you’d rather turn off all extensions, click the slider at the top of the Preferences window to disable extensions.

Install Extension Updates Automatically

Oddly, Safari will not automatically download and install updates for extensions by default.  However, you can activate automatic update if you’d like.  Open the Preferences window and select Extensions as above.  This time, select the Updates link in the bottom of the extension list.  Check the Install Updates Automatically box, and you’re all set.

Install Unofficial Extensions

You can still install extensions for Safari from other websites as before, but it’ll take 3 or more clicks to install.  When you find an extension you’d like to install, perhaps from a site like the Safari Extensions blog listed below, click the link to download the extension and then select Open at the prompt.

Safari will double check that you wish to install this extension.  If you’re sure you trust the extension, click Install to add it to Safari.  Now it will work just like all other extensions, and you can remove it just like you would any other extension.

Conclusion

Although the Safari Extension Gallery is brand new, it already contains many nice extensions that rival extensions in the Google Chrome browser.  We’ve already tweaked Safari on our computers with nice new features and tools.  If you’re not sure if the Extensions make it worth your while to try out Safari, check out the link to the Extension Gallery below to look around before you try it.  Safari 5 is free for Macs and PCs, so feel free to try it out and let us know what extensions you like the most.

Spell check in Word is a savior for a lot of people, but what if you’re having trouble finding the perfect Word or Phrase. We’ll take a look at using the Thesaurus and Dictionary in Word 2007 & 2010.

Sometimes while writing a document you run into writer’s block and can’t find the word or phrase you’re looking for. Using the Thesaurus to find a synonym and the Dictionary to make sure the words you’re using have the correct meaning can be valuable tools in the writing process.

Thesaurus in Word 2010

To access the Thesaurus in Word 2010 click on the Review tab on the Ribbon. Highlight the word you want to find synonym for then access the Thesaurus.

This opens the Research pane where you can search the Thesaurus for a better synonym for what you currently have in the document. Choose the word you want then select to insert it into the document, copy it, or look it up.

Another easy way to get a synonym for a word is to highlight it, right-click, scroll down to Synonyms and select one from the list.

Dictionary in Word 2010

To use the Dictionary in Word, right-click on a word you want to look up. Then scroll down to Look Up and you will get a list of various resources for finding its definition.

Here we used the Encarta Dictionary and the Research Pane opens up so you can view definitions.

In this example we highlighted “Quick Style gallery” in the document and looked it up with Bing. Again the Research Pane opens up and you can look through the results. If you click one of the links, a separate browser session will open up to the page. This comes in handy if you need to do a quick web search on the topic your writing about.

Check Spelling and Grammar

Word will usually let you know if something is misspelled or if grammar is incorrect while you’re typing. A final step before sending out a document is to click the Review tab then Spelling & Grammar.

If you’re writing a long document you may have missed certain grammar and spelling errors. This will scan your document and show you what might be wrong and offers suggestions to change it.

Thesaurus in Word 2007

Accessing the Thesaurus in Word 2007 is essentially the same in 2007. Right-click a word you want to research and go to Synonyms then Thesaurus.

Alternately you can click the Review tab on the Ribbon and in the Proofing section click on Thesaurus. Here you can ado a Spelling & Grammar check as well when doing a final proof of your document.

The Research Pane opens and you can look for synonyms for the word you want.

Just like in 2010 you can type different terms into the search box and select different reference sources such as the Encarta Dictionary or Bing.

Bonus Tip: If you don’t want to use the mouse to navigate around Word to access the Research Pane, hold down the Alt key while clicking on the word or phrase in the document, and the Research Pane will open up.

Conclusion

Even with Word 2010 it’s still not a perfect tool. There will be many times where you’re using tech lingo or need to explain something in a certain way and Word thinks it’s wrong. You can easily right-click on what it thinks is an error and add it to the dictionary or select to ignore all instances of it in the document. These are some basic tips that will help you make professional, accurate, and creative documents in Microsoft Word.

You may have seen this little beauty floating through the interwebs. It's an Altoids Tin-based COSMAC Elf, built around the classic RCA COSMAC 1802 microprocessor. It's the prototype to a kit that Lee Hart has been developing. P. Todd Decker (Overland Park, KS) sent us a link to this video of his build of the kit prototype. He writes:

I have completed a build of Lee Hart's "COSMAC Elf Membership Card." The idea behind Lee's design was to create an interesting kit to introduce new people to the classic RCA COSMAC 1802 historic microprocessor. This processor has a long, interesting history and is even still used, due to its unique properties when it comes to power and durability. It was the basis for the famous "Elf" home-built computers from the late 1970s. It still has a strong following. Lee's twist on the old reliable was to rework it into an Arduino-style platform that—best of all for makers—fits into an Altoids can. His design doesn't require any surface-mount or complicated build techniques. Herb Johnston has done an excellent job of documenting Lee's efforts to create this kit (see link below).

Welcome back, life-long learners! We’re in our third week here at YouTube Summer School and today we’re shifting gears again. After our lovely stroll through the art gallery of YouTube EDU, we’re headed to the hall of mathematics and will be crunching numbers for the next week.

Ever have any trouble with algebra, geometry, calculus or trig-a-what? For some, putting numbers in their place isn’t as easy as Captain Picard makes it look. Sometimes we simply can’t “make it so” without a little help. That’s why we’ve scoured through YouTube EDU to find what professors from top universities around the globe are teaching about everything from differential equations to probalistic aggregation studies (try saying that 10 times fast!).

You might want to reuse all of the arguments to a previous command in the shell if you realized you want to open the file with a different utility, but don’t feel like typing out the whole path again.

For instance, say you ran a cat on a file deep within a folder structure, like this:

cat /home/geek/documents/testfiles/testfile1

If you want to open that file up in vi, you don’t have to retype the whole command (or hit the up key and edit the command). Just type in the following:

vi !*

This would be expanded out to:

vi /home/geek/documents/testfiles/testfile1

Saves some typing, and just a useful command to know.
