Last week, during a press conference, Apple premiered a new social networking platform with the launch of iTunes Ping. Ping is Apple’s first attempt at providing users with a social experience throughout iTunes and the music-buying experience. It is not built on top of Facebook, it does not integrate with Twitter, it is Apple built for Apple. Ping is the most noticeable addition to iTunes 10 other than the infamous change to the familiar iTunes logo. It attempts to be a shift in online shopping, one that validates social media for a retail brand.

USA Today is the latest media company to open up its data via an API, the software interface that makes it easy for developers to use another company's data in applications. The newspaper joins a group that includes The Guardian, the New York Times and NPR.

If you’re a content creator like me, you may be wrestling with how much of your personal life should be shared with the public via social media.  My wife and I have had more than one conversation about whether or not we should be posting videos and pictures of our toddler Devin.  He may be way to young to be interested in communities like Facebook and Twitter, but parents of tweens and teens must now develop their own social media policies for their families to ensure the safety and harmony of both their kids and each other.

Chis Heuer, the founder of the Social Media Club is helping families understand the challenges, issues, and opportunities through this 12-city tour focusing on Social Media + Family.  It's a subject that isn't discussed very often at social media gatherings where the focus has mostly been on marketing and charity, but as evidenced from the first event on the tour, it certainly deserves more attention.

The gathering brought together some notable “social media dads” including, Lamar Tyler from the popular family blog BlackandMarriedWithKids, GM's Director of Social Media / dad Christopher Barger, Donny Claxon of DaddyClaxton, and Ron Mattocks who blogs at ClarkKent'sLunchbox and is the author of Sugar Milk.  Each dad shared their issues and adventures with social media from a very open and personal perspective, and how they’ve established usage policies for their own family life.

Tyler, who is married with four kids worked for at Washington D.C. news station while he and his wife developed the blog that focuses on positive images of black families.  He recently quit his day job and moved to Atlanta. Today, the Tyler’s income comes solely from social media and the work they do to inspire others to be better husbands, wives and parents.  They have a huge Facebook following and produce documentaries that have changed the lives of many in their loyal community of fans and followers.

Barger often finds himself tweeting about family life when he's not chatting up General Motors products.  "I've live tweeted and live blogged from family vacations," he explained.   Barger said that sharing certain family experiences via social media "Helps humanize me and enables people to see that I am more then just a guy who works for a car company.”

One of Claxton's main interests is the safety of his three daughters online who live with his ex-wife.  He had plenty of stories to share, like the time his 11-year-old biological daughter changed her Facebook status to "in a relationship" and he had to have the conversation about her being too young for such things.  He said that though he has limited control over his children who live far away with his ex, he tries to watch everything all of his kids are doing online and help them navigate through these uncharted waters of growing up in the social media era.

As moderator Chris Heuer then pointed out, “The greatest power of Social Media is to make things visible”, which can be a bad thing if you are a company with problems, or a great thing if you are a dad who can see what their kids are doing online.

Ron Mattocks is a father of five.  He has three children from his first marriage, and two step daughters.  He said that he started his blog to get rich (jokingly), but admitted that he has encountered so many fails he could write an #epicfail blog on his own life.   What Mattocks did succeed in was writing a book called, "Sugar Milk: What One Dad Drinks When He Can't Afford Vodka,” which was inspired by his career transition from real estate professional to stay-at-home dad.

During the 45-minute discussion, these fathers shared many issues like how they've dealt with living with blended families; how they decide what family experiences are suitable for public consumption; and how they handle the many curve balls that life can throw at you.

Mattocks explained that he is always thinking about the consequences of his posts. Tyler said that he uses privacy settings on Facebook to control how certain members of his network have access to his posts, while Barger reminded the audience to use common sense and realize that "There's no such thing as a safe post unless your comfortable with the world seeing it."

So how are these dads keeping an eye on their children's online activity, and what advice did they share?

Barger said that his son isn't quite old enough for Facebook, but said once he becomes 13 or 14 the rule will be: accept dad as a friend or no Facebook.  Claxton reminded the audience that setting up a Website block isn’t enough.  "All you have to do is search how to unblock Facebook," he explained. "There's a series of pages on how to get on Facebook and Myspace through you school's server that is blocked."

For Tyler, communication with his family is key, and he believes that social networks give parents the opportunity to see what their kids are up to.  Mattocks' advice was to be aware of what is going on online, and don't be scared or threatened by technology.

Heuer also chimed in on the conversation and explained why parents should take the same approach as brands when it comes to dealing with kids and social media. "It's a matter of trust, and if you've earned your kids trust it makes it real easy, and if you haven't you’re in trouble."

As a dad and social media practitioner, I found this conversation both enlightening and encouraging.   The communications and media professional side of me tends to pay attention to conversations that focus around influence, strategy, and technology trends, but there are obviously issues much closer to home that I need to pay attention to especially as my own son grows up.

Forrester has given some advice to enterprises for how to get started in mobile enterprise development, which the firm suggests needs to move into the mainstream of enterprise development. Here's a brief guide to some of the new tools enterprises have at their disposal for mobilizing their work force.

MobileIron announced the release of its Virtual Smartphone Platform 3.0, including an API for mobile application developers to use MobileIron's device management platform to build their own mobile enterprise applications.

In addition to allowing enterprises to add-on functionality to MobileIron servers, developers will now be able to:

For example, enterprise developers could build an "expense approval" app that interfaces with the company's SAP or Oracle ERP system.

In fact, SAP is one of LeapFactor's customers - the companies worked together to create EcoHub, a marketplace app for SAP ecosystem solutions.

Couch One Mobile

Couch One Mobile is the new mobile app development platform from CouchDB corporate sponsor Couch One (formerly known as Couchio). We covered its launch on Wednesday. According to Couch One:

CouchOne Mobile is the top choice for native data store on any wireless device because it's lightweight and saves battery life by keeping data offline. With CouchOne Mobile, developers can easily write web applications one time, scale vertically and share data and applications across the computing platforms and mobile devices they choose.

DragonRad from Seregon is a cross-platform enterprise-focused mobile application development platform launching at BlackBerry DevCon 2010 this month.

DragonRad provides a drag and drop environment for app creation, so developers need not learn the native programming language of each platform they want to build native apps for.

Rhomobile

Rhomobile, a Ruby-based cross-platform enterprise application development platform, is less new (version 2.0 was released in June), but it's definitely worth a mention. RhoMobile's metadata schema makes it easier to create mobile apps that work with enterprise applications with custom databases.

I don't know that any burglaries ever actually occurred as a result of the information on the site, which in any case is not operational any more (it made it's point). But when you take the same idea of location broadcasting and put it on a service with more than 500 million users, it is no longer just academic. People's houses will get robbed, at least in New Hamshire. A burglary ring in Nashua, New Hampshire targeted people who checked into places on Facebook, alerting them when they were not home. The police caught them after they broke into 50 homes and stole $100,000 worth of goods.

Stephen Elop

So, Nokia finally boosts Kallasvuo and hires its first non-Finnish CEO, Microsoft’s Stephen Elop, which is perhaps a turning point for both companies.

Elop led the Microsoft Business Division which reported $18.6B in sales and $11.8B in operating income. He is just the most recent of senior executives fleeing the sinking Microsoft.

And at Nokia, is he going to try to displace the faltering RIM as the purveyor of choice to business smart phones? Microsoft tried that market, and hasn’t gotten far, but obviously, there are a lot of business people out there across the world with Nokia products ringing in their pockets right now.

Elop does not seem to be the guy to go after Apple or Google for the emerging consumer smartphone market, however. Even the recent acquisition of Dopplr’s Marco Artisaari as SVP of Design does not lead to a team that can really compete on innovation with Apple and Google.

Dan Frommer sums this up a bit aggressively, stating that Elop is not the right guy for the world confronting Nokia. But then again, who would be?

Nokia Makes The Same Mistake Again: Hires A Manager, Not A Product Visionary

The standard criticism we hear about Nokia is that it’s a company overrun with managers, where decisions are always made based on business sense and never made based on product vision.

And it seems like Nokia’s board just hired another CEO who is a seasoned manager, but not a consumer product visionary. So unless Stephen Elop, Nokia’s new boss, has hidden talents, he may represent more of the same for Nokia — which would be a disaster.

Nokia needs someone who can leapfrog Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android the way they leapfrogged Nokia. Is Elop that guy?

I am not sure that this is the only path for Nokia.

There are still a lot of green fields out there for low-cost phones, as well as a serious competitor for RIM. And Apple and Google’s battlefield for the expensive smartphone market might be a bad place to be, for the next few years.

I wonder if Elop will drop Symbian and try to head out for a new take on a Nokia operating platform? Will he lead a huge reduction in Nokia management ranks? Will he create a new design team, and make sure it’s not based in Finland? Let’s see.

But I thought Elop’s comments about Finland and Canada, his native country, having the Arctic in common were odd. Did he intend that as some sort of cultural sop to Finnish pride?

Backing up your database is absolutely vital if the data is of any importance. This will save you in the event of an accidental deletion, either due to a slip of the finger or a major failure in your code.

If you're familiar with phpMyAdmin, then you may be able to export and import your database from there. But this approach doesn't work too well if you have a large database. For large databases, you're better off using the command line.

Backup Your MySQL Database

Log in to the server you wish to work with. The command you'll need to run is as follows:

mysqldump -u username -p database > file

Replace the username, database and file parameters with the values that match your database. For instance:

mysqldump -u root -p mydatabase > /home/backups/mybackup.sql

If all goes well, you'll be prompted for the password, and then the backup file will be created.

Note that in the above example, the /home/backups folder must exist. If it doesn't, you'll need to create it first.

Restore Your MySQL Database

Be careful with this, because any existing data will be overwritten. You'll need to do the following:

mysql -u username -p database < file

If we wanted to restore from the file we just created, here's what we'd do:

mysql -u root -p mydatabase < /home/backups/mybackup.sql

Once again, just enter the password, and the database will be restored from the file you supplied.

Nokia is replacing Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who proved unable to address the phone-maker's loss of the smartphone crown in the last few years, with Stephen Elop, formerly of Microsoft Corp. Nokia has two main issues to address: a steep loss in earnings and a market share in leading edge mobiles that is being assaulted by iPhone/Android/RIM. Its share price is consequently taking a beating. "My role as leader of Nokia is to lead this team through the period of change, take the organization through this period of disruption...to meet the needs of its customers, while delivering superior financial performance," Mr. Elop said at a news conference in Helsinki, reports the WSJ. Mr. Elop was formerly the head of Microsoft's business division. In fact, Foxconn's R&D labs consist of a series of locked doors. You can only get into one and that's only if you're allowed in to see prototypes. It's an amazing world of secrecy and deception. That's why it's quite interesting that BusinessWeek got to sit down with Terry Gou inside the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen. There they learned about the company's efforts to stop everyone from killing themselves (parades, chants of "treasure your life") and still maintain the backbreaking pace required of modern manufacturers.

Well it's about time. Panasonic's latest VIERA Cast HDTVs and Blu-ray finally have the ability to do the Netflix streaming thing. I mean, it's awesome that the ability is now available on most of the 2010 models, but it's rather surprising that it took so long to hit the VIERA Cast line. These HDTVs have been on the forefront of the streaming game since the beginning and it seems like Netflix is on just about every CE device these days. Mobile ad exchange network operator Mobclix has published its monthly infographic based on its analytics platform and advertising impressions served by the startup. While July's report focused on iPad app, August's infographic addresses ad impressions, CTRs and more in the network. According to Mobclix, impressions on the Android platform have grown 45% in the last 3 months and 420 percent since the launch of the platform. This growth seems to be in line with mobile ad network Millennial Media's reports on Android growth.

The most popular note type created by Evernote users is a webpage. It seems that people love to save webpages in Evernote! Now Evernote is making it even easier for sites to get saved into notes with the announcement of the Evernote Site Memory Button. This is something of a departure from the historical Evernote modus operandi, where the user invokes a client application or opens up the Evernote website: the Site Memory Button is a server-side implementation, and sites that want to use it need to specifically add it. Once added, though, any Evernote user can use the button to add the page to their list of notes. The note will be pre-populated with content selected by the site owner, including title, and even have tags helpfully suggested.
