Yes, start with samples. Don't buy tea to age when you don't know what you're doing, because you'll regret it. I'm pretty new to pu'er (first tried it a year ago) and I've never bought more than 100 grams of any pu'er yet. I still don't think I would consider buying a whole cake of anything for a long time, and if I did, I still wouldn't buy any tea to age that I didn't like when it was new.

If you're young, you have plenty of time to learn about tea, AND plenty of time to age it yourself if you decide you want to do that later on. It's not like these older, more knowledgeable people can't age their tea because they won't live long enough to drink it when it's old!

Are you new to tea as well as pu'er? If so, don't forget about other tea--if you haven't already tried a variety of green/oolong/black/white tea, try those first. There are so many different kinds of tea besides pu'er that there has to be one, or many, that you'll enjoy. I like pu'er, but I like other tea just as much, and

The OTTI's have been quite an eye opener for me, I'm not too keen on measuring stuff, using the thermometer was fun but only lasted a few days. Even with something like sencha I think I tend to start with more leaf and higher temps than most and finish up drinking almost water way after most have stopped.

Keep in mind that pretty much anything will have studies that say it's good for you, other studies that say it's bad for you, and more studies that say it does nothing at all. You have to wait a while for meta-analyses to reveal any kind of general trend. That first article (which I can't read in full because I don't have a subscription) seems to be about potentially beneficial chemicals in olive leaves, which may not even have been studied yet.

2006 Mandarin Tea Room Yiwu

I used about half the 12 gram sample so about 6 grams, and I am some what befuddled, because I quite liked this tea though I am a bit unsure exactly why.

Pros:
Great Mouth feel
Great after taste
nice sweetness, both over all and in the finish.
Being about 4 years old it was quite nice in the sense that it lost a lot of the bitterness that people will find in the Essence of Tea Cakes (not bad, just a lot younger), and its showing some signs of good tastes developing.
Great Qi.

Cons:
While certain flavors did shine through at times, for the most part it seemed a little bland.

Undecided:
The few leaves I picked up and felt, felt incredibly thin and flimsy. Not really sure if that is typical for that age, but typically young puerh leaves are quite thick and almost leathery after a few brews.


Like I said I really liked this tea, and there are more pros than cons, but the Con seems like it should be a major negative mark but some how with this tea I did not

If you're just starting off iwth puerh, the best thing to do is NOT start trying to buy fancy stuff, but to stick with small samples to start: I tend to brew my puerh in small volume containers and am content with 1-5 grams per set of infusions. And because each tea may be infused 5-15 times, I can do a lot of experimenting with a 15-25 gram sample.

So....start with samples, don't buy a lot of beengs to start, and see what *you* like. I started with some rather plain ripe puerhs, and bought too much of them, because now I prefer more select ripe pus, but also some rather young and boisterous shengs (fortunately for the budget!).

Just wanna share a local Tea drink here in Malaysia. Not sure whether you guys have heard of it.

'Teh Tarik' is the name of the tea drink which is in Bahasa Malaysia language. Direct translation of 'Teh Tarik' would mean 'Tea Pull'. What they use to make it is with Tea + Sugar (lotssss of it) + Milk. Then mix and pull it. The more bubble it is, the better it is supposed to be.

One way you can save money from getting too much yixing or clay based pot is not to brew tea in it. You can use it as a water vessel, pouring hot water into it and then into a porcelain or glass teapot/gaiwan where the tea leaves are. This may give you the same effect. The only down side is extra step and you must be fast enough to prevent water from cooling down for certain kinds of tea.

If your yixing or clay is not that expensive, then it is ok to brew anything in it. But if you buy those super expensive types just be careful don't stain it with one type of tea
